"SPACE FARMING GREENHOUSE EXPERIMENT SET TO LAUNCH LATER THIS YEAR"
 The German Aerospace Centre (known by its German acronym DLR) has announced that its Eu:CROPIS satellite is scheduled to launch later this year. This spacecraft will conduct plant-growth experiments in both lunar and Martian gravity.  The Eu:CROPIS spacecraft will rotate around its own axis in low-Earth orbit, at an altitude of over 600 kilometres (370 miles). For the first six months of its mission, the satellite will produce the gravitational force of the moon, and then it will replicate Martian gravity for another six months. During this time, tomato seeds will germinate and grow into small space tomatoes while 16 on-board cameras will document the plants' progress.  Furthermore, microorganism will be present in a trickle filter who will be using synthetic urine to produce fertilizer for the tomatoes. Also, Euglena microbes will produce oxygen for the system and supply it with protection against excess ammonia. To simulate the day/night rhythm for the plants and microbes, LED lights will be used alongside a pressure tank that will replicate Earth's atmosphere.  "Ultimately, we are simulating and testing greenhouses that could be assembled inside a lunar or Martian habitat to provide the crew with a local source of fresh food," biologist Jens Hauslage of the DLR.

NASA Astronaut Tweets Picture Of Red Romaine Lettuce Being Grown On The ISS
Snippet:Â Scott Tingle and other NASA astronauts are currently growing three different varieties of vegetables on the ISS, according to BT. These are (1) red romaine lettuce, (2) Tokyo bekana cabbage, and (3) Japanese mizuna mustard.
The vegetables are being grown in the âVeggieâ plant growing facility on the ISS. This fully enclosed, plant-growing chamber was installed in November last year, according to Space.com. This chamber allows plants to grow under blue, red, green, and white LED lights. It also features approximately 180 sensors to provide NASA scientists detailed information about the level of oxygen, moisture, temperature, etc., within the âVeggieâ chamber.
