Years ago I made a book of prayers and request I ask God to do in me and in my life, things I want to achieve go inside too. I am determined to reach heights some may think are impossible for me, but with Jesus at my foundation, the possibilities are endless.
From the Preface to *Leaves of Grass*
Cody, thanks for sharing "If." I don't now "if" I could live up to it. However, for years I have been trying to follow this directive of Walt Whitman:
"This is what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body."
Sometimes drafting is thrilling, a surge of energy, a delirium of words. Other times, it is unnerving. Words, like temperamental little birds, perch above me--too noisy to hear, too easy to startle. Meanwhile, time becomes even more relative than usual. Seconds swell into long, dull stretches while hours disappear suddenly and unexpectedly into The Mysterious Vortex of Deadlines. And in its willingness to contain every possibility, the blank page becomes a smooth seal against any idea at all.Â
In contrast, I almost always enjoy the process of revision. My thoughts are on the page. I can see them: an unmoving lump of handwriting--ugly, formless, and begging to be touched.Â
Speaking of revision, I love Paul Simon. His music has been a good friend to me all my life. Â I've recently discovered that he sings about writing. As my English 1 students begin their first essay rewrite, I've been playing this video. Check it out. The guitar is great.
In another song, "Hurricane Eye," he says:
You want to be leader? You want to change the game? Turn your back on money Walk away from fame You want to be a missionary? You got that missionary zeal? Let a stranger change your life How’s that make you feel? You want to be a writer But you don’t know how or when Find a quiet place Use a humble pen
