After a horrific accident that left him with splintered bones and a traumatic brain injury, doctors told Todd Barcelona that heād likely never run again. So he and his wife decided to run farther than they ever had before.Ā
Issue no. 152,Ā āThe Extra Mile,ā is now live:
Sometimes, Toddās determination almost outweighed his capabilities. In January 2016, the Barcelonas ran the Herb Parsons Trail half-marathon. Todd typically ran on flat surfaces, but this was a trail race. Because he still struggled with mobility in his ankles, it was difficult to maneuver his feet over rocks and roots. Again and again, he tumbled to the groundāso often that it scared him. But he picked himself back up, and after three hours he and Allison finished together.
In April 2016, the Barcelonas ran the Tanglefoot Trail marathon in Mississippi, Toddās first full marathon since the crash. He finished in about five hoursāremarkably, that wasnāt too far off the time it took him to complete the last marathon he ran before the crash. But the Barcelonas were a little bored by the course. They decided that they needed a bigger goal.
Their new plan was to run an ultramarathon.
I'm feeling very emotional about this and need to scream.
Less than 60 years ago, Katherine Switzer had to sneak into the Boston Marathon because women were thought to be incapable of running a marathon.
This week, Rachel Entrekin won the Cocodona 250, a 250 mile ultramarathon through the Arizona desert, and set a new course record of 56 hours.

Cons of having spent the last several years distance running and training for ultramarathons: your personal calibration for a āshort runā is so out of whack and people rightfully give you a weird look when you follow it up with ālike 8 milesā because for you 8 miles IS a short run!

My dad would be super good at ultramarathons if they weren't races and they were just like hobbit journeys this fellow is Frodo-ing it for like five hours at a time not only can he take the ring to Mordor he fuckin knows the way too dude has a killer sense of direction he never uses GPS on any of his walks he just downloads his little podcasts and walks a zillion miles in a polo shirt and jeans. Get bro some lembas.
Oh fuck ultramarathons are just stimming, aren't they.
Like how long can you keep up this soothing but ultimately pointless repetitive action if nothing stops you and also we won't expect you to talk to people.
