Turns out, in 2015, people are fine with renting their music. 

20150110 1423h Bloc Section 3- Command Line Great to have a section on the Command Line. My months of only using a linux netbook will probably serve me well for the basic stuff they’ll cover here. Terminal is an app on Mac. I locked it to my dock first thing. Learned the >pwd command, ‘print working directory.’ Good to know. Reminds me of the fact that someone who has a map but doesn’t know where they are on it feels much more lost than someone who never had a map. The GUI is probably like that sometimes. Learned >ls which is list segments, and prints the contents of your directory. Sort of like glancing at the subfolders. If you’re wondering why do this the hard way instead of with a picture, my mirror neurons want to yell ‘IT WAS THIS WAY FIRST’ Learned >mkdir new-directory which makes a new folder with the name new-directory. Same as the linux stuff. Good copy on this page. Strikes a nice balance between ‘this is basic stuff, we all know it’s basic’ and ‘just do it’ Learned >cd to move between directories. Gotta type the directory name right. Man i hated all that precision typing when i was in college. Failed right outta my java class. Couldn’t handle it. >cd .. Moves you up one directory. Can be chained with /../../.. Learned to reach home directory via >cd & Man i wish i’d had something like this when i started using my linux system. It’s hilarious in an aggravating way to just… not know where you are in a file system and have no way of finding out until you borrow someone else’s laptop and google it, because your internet is broken and that’s what you were trying to fix. You can tab-complete folder names. So >cd new- and tab causes the command prompt to read >cd new-directory So good. I love it when I feel a part of the coding population ‘cause a basic function solves a problem that was a perpetual headache once. Unfortunately you usually find out about that tool well after you’ve resigned yourself and learned to live with the headache. >man ls or man-whatever gives you the manual for that command. Down with Patriarchy! Should be Myn. Bloc isn’t afraid to recommend other resources. This time they recommend [The Command Line Crash Course]( for learning more command line stuff. Assignment involves three new commands- cp, rm, mv (copy, remove, move), and using a markdown code block for your assignment submission. I had obviously already forgotten how to do `inline code` as shown by my blockquotes above. The employment of ‘back ticks’ which is a gross name for a simple thing is what allows you to put inline code. I also tried to use single quotation marks instead of back ticks despite _staring at the page right now_. These things are normal. Coding is hard, even html stuff if you’re not used to it. Triple back ticks ```indents the code block.``` Dang, tried to quotation mark it again! Anyway, on to the assignment. To use >cp I had to first use google. How will it know where to copy the thing. Then learned you need to include the -r argument to make it copy directories. Sneaky! K, copied it with `cp -r new-directory & used `cd desktop` and `ls` to check if it worked. Learned that case sensitivity doesn’t matter when moving around in file directories here. I’m sure it matters somewhere and that it’ll hose me sometime. :P Going well. `mv` was pretty easy, `mv new-directory new-directory-copy` worked first time, after checking with an `ls` I realized that my choice of the desktop means that copying my output to the assignment will mean a lot more lines. Sorry, Steve! Hah ha! My overconfidence was my weakness. I had assumed that a simple `cd ..` up followed by an `ls` (to make sure i wasn’t in a weird folder?) and then a `rm new-directory` would be enough! Alas. Like with `cp`, `rm` requires an argument to work on directories. Trying `rm -r new-directory`… `ls` says it’s gone! Huzzah.
