house party. part 4.
Dana was standing outside chewing on some gum, which was her new vice now that she had quit smoking, when the front door slammed open and two people stormed out of the house mid-argument. She watched from afar, unable to make out exactly what was being said. It took her a minute but she did recognize one of the two as Whitaker. She kept a careful eye on the situation because the other one, probably his boyfriend, looked really mad. As both of them started raising their voices, Dana started wandering over closer.
"You always do this!" the boyfriend accused. "You invite me places and then just pay attention to literally anyone else. Why even bother dragging me along?"
"I was literally talking to you the entire time!" Whitaker replied.
"While letting that random guy flirt with you," the boyfriend said. "Seriously, how many old men do you hang around with?"
"It's his house, Ryan. And how is it my fault he was flirting? If he even was..."
"He was. You know damn well he was. I asked you, like, four separate times if we could go talk to someone else. But you like the attention too much. You wanted him to keep going."
"Oh, fuck you."
"Fuck you!"
"Hey!" Dana cut in. She quickened her pace and made it to their side, almost stepping between them, looking between them cautiously. "Everything okay here, kids?"
Ryan stared at her, confused and irritated. "Who the fuck are you?"
"Ryan!" Whitaker scolded.
"Sorry..." Ryan sighed, then turning back to Dana. "Sorry."
"Things are getting a little heated, huh?" Dana said calmly. "Why don't we separate for a while?"
Ryan huffed and shook his head. "I'm going home. Go fuck Jack or Robby or whoever the hell you want."
Whitaker crossed his arms and teared up as he watched Ryan walk away.
"You okay?" Dana asked.
Whitaker nodded, wiping his eyes.
"You sure?" Dana said.
He chuckled and nodded again. "Yeah. Sorry you had to see that."
"If you need a ride home, I'm sober," Dana offered.
"No, I think I'm gonna stay," Whitaker replied. "Thanks, though. Really."
Dana patted him on the back before he turned and headed inside. He was about to do something extremely stupid and she knew it. But she couldn't do a damn thing to stop it.
