This has been my main argument against "AI" from the very beginning.

OpenAI scraped the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of a lot of LLMs, and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us.

And worse, they're trying to destroy the free sources that they stole from. It's destruction of human knowledge on an unprecedented scale. The burning of the library of Alexandria has nothing on this.

i honestly don't really understand why "some people prefer watching gameplay online rather than playing games themselves" is treated as such a taboo when being a spectator is considered a pretty mundane way to engage with most sports, game shows, reality tv or even just like. chess.

And there are literally so many reasons to watch ppl playing games. Don’t have a ton of money to spend on games? Don’t enjoy the pressure that comes from certain types of gameplay but still entertained watching other people do it? Just want to see it in action before investing in something you might not like? Literally so many reasons.

I think this is actually such a good thing for video games as a narrative art form, because it opens up access to the game developers’ work to a much wider audience than only people who have the time/money/patience/physical and mental ability/inclination/tech required to play for themselves. It allows video games a much broader cultural relevance than they could ever possibly have just from people playing at home by themselves.

Games that rely more on plot/narrative/character than on novel game mechanics, like those from Supermassive or Telltale, are very much like playable movies or television series, and there is so much that’s enjoyable about watching others experience them for the first time, even if you’ve already played the game yourself. Watching people play The Quarry is like watching a comfort TV show or a cozy 80’s horror movie to me, except even better because I get to see new reactions every time and maybe pick up some insights I hadn’t thought of yet. It’s like watching a favorite show or movie with friends and getting all their takes about it.

It’s not the same as playing, but it is still consuming and interacting with the content in a way that matters.

Hey quick question, how the fuck does anyone focus on one project long enough to actually finish it?

Because I’ve got two multichaps percolating, at least half a dozen smut works in varying stages between planning and completion, and I think three pieces that could end up as longer oneshots or two-three chapters and… I just chip away at all of them a few paragraphs at a time, in a completely disorganized manner, and never finish anything?
