Some photos of flowers and bugs ive taken recently :>
.𖥔 ݁ ˖ Love is everywhere .𖥔 ݁ ˖
Over the past few months, ive been trying to better identify "weeds" in my yard before pulling them out, so that i can get the invasive ones but leave the native ones! So far ive had SIX types of native flowers land in the yard, which is so cool!!!!!! (Honestly, i never would have guessed this many would randomly end up here!!). Two of them i already knew, but iNaturalist helped me ID the other four-- (Yay iNaturalist!). So i wanted to share what plants we've got so far!!
(The links are to wikipedia fyi)
^ First off, a beautiful brittlebush (before it turned brittle for the summer). I will probably have to pull this one up tho since its so close to the house. Theres also one in the sideyard, so we will see how that one fairs!
^ Next up, chinchweed!! I had never heard of it before, but it was so cute!! I also learned its used medicinally and as seasoning! And birds love the seeds.
^ Desert marigold! This thing has been doing great and has been blooming for so long! U can tell its native to the area because its reaching so hard for the sun away from the shaded wall lol. Its an annual, so i wonder when it will die off. I reallyyyyy hope some seeds grow from it tho!! Hopefully it will come back year after year.
^ This TINY thing here is a desert pincushion! I was devastated tho-- it popped up right as the grasshoppers popped up, and one ate the stem and killed it. Rip
^ Globemallow baby!! Theres been a ton growing in my area, and so i was excited to see about four pop up in the yard! They mostly get eaten so fast by either rabbits or bugs, but this one has been going so strong!! I hope it will make it!
^ Last but not least, our newest edition to the yard has been a sweetbush! Apparently pollinating insects love this thing, and birds like the seeds! I also found two baby praying mantises in it!!!!
Thats it so far, but i cant wait for more!! Theres a few plants that i have no clue what they are. So if anyone is knowledgable (or just interested) about sonoran plants, lmk and i will dm or post the pics of the unknown ones! :)
I SAW 2 BABY PRAYING MANTISES THIS MORNING!!!!!!!! :D

Those two still look adorable as ever, even after the new artstyle makes them like evolved rhinoceroses <3

How do you feel about this DCMK ship?
This ship is one of my favourites!
I like this ship / I think it's interesting
I feel neutral about this ship
This ship is a NOTP for me
These past two days, ive been doing a lot of planting! The yard had been somewhat neglected, so im trying to fix it up before it gets too hot.
Main reasons im doing this:
- a way to give back to local wildlife to survive climate change and these harsh summers
- its healthy for me (meditation, being outside, connecting with nature, exercise)
What im doing:
- planted 3 red yuccas
- identified and left alone weeds in the backyard, to help create a healthier exosystem. So far, ive identified: brittlebush, bursage, desert marigold, dandelions, and hopefully one globemallow!
- replacing dead plants with these: red bird of paradise, mexican marigold, hedgehog cacti, red fairy duster, and creosote.
- adding a prickly pear next to my cholla, which currently has a thrasher couple living in it!!! Im planting the prickly pear to give it more security from the back.
- i also spread around a native wildflower seed mix that i got for free, but i doubt they will grow. Even if they dont, maybe a bird will eat them!
- i also want to plant my first ever tiny veggie garden! Im hoping to do a raised pot situation with a shade/rabbit fence. I want to do rosemary and collard greens. They both seem hardy (as hardy as non-desert plants can be) and easy to grow.
