This is what happens when you get too caught up in “which gender is allowed to love in which way” because you end up missing key characteristics.

Sonic is very very luck that Amy likes him since he is much more emotionally withdrawn than she is. To the point it makes him a total bum in romance. Sure he’s around when it truly matters but for all the stuff he puts her through, she has all the right to get so worked up about it.

What holds this tenuous relationship together is the absolutely insane amount of trust they both have in each other and the fact that they both have pure intentions.

(which eliminates a lot of the toxic attributes people falsely apply to their relationship)

Amy isn’t in a tragic pitiful situation, she is exactly where she wants to be. Sonic and Amy are for all intents and purposes perfectly content with their dynamic. We have to remember that these characters are not normal people who make sane decisions.

So they’re in a relationship where Sonic can run forever and Amy can love forever.

No, no, Amy is definitely still madly in love with Sonic 🤭😁 The main reason she's been acting more tame and not so open about it is really just due to character development/maturity. According to Sega, "she's not [physically] chasing after Sonic anymore, but he's still #1 in her heart!" 💙🩷

Sonic Frontiers actually has a decent amount of Sonamy content, but moreso if you squint. 😁 First of all, it tends to address the situation more from Sonic's end, in his moments of saying romance-coded things like "Wish we were sharing an umbrella, Amy," and "Amy, I should've made up my mind sooner." 🥹

Sonic has always been shy about his feelings and therefore never said anything about said feelings to her, and he's more of an "actions speak louder than words" type of guy, but as she shared her desires to share her love with the world, he worried a little that he may have lost his chance. However, Frontiers also makes clear that his friends' plans to go on their own paths were not permanent. Especially seen in Amy's case when she told Sonic her plans, and Sonic replied, "I'm sure you'll do great. I wanna hear all about it when you get back!" 💙

As a bonus, the Final Horizons update treated us to a bit more Sonamy content as well. 🤩 In a conversation between Amy and Sage, Sage identified Amy as "the one who admires Sonic." Amy, with a bit of her younger behavior slipping out, replied with no shortage of sass, "Oh. And are you a fellow admirer? Hm?" 😂

There were a few conversations between Sonic and Amy, during one of which Sonic tried to tell Amy to take care of herself as well as the Koco. Amy ruefully retorted that she could say the exact same thing back to him. Sonic admitted that she got him there, and confidently stated that they would get through this together.

And of course, after all this, my favorite Sonamy moment of the whole game. After everything was over, his friends were restored, and he reunited with them.

The way Amy laughed and practically launched herself into his arms, Sonic's surprised little "oh!" but the way he welcomed the hug, and kept one arm around her as he high fived Tails and fist bumped Knuckles. 🥰 First of all, it's so obvious Amy had been dying to do that the whole game, and we can imagine it was tough on Sonic to be touch-deprived for an extended period of time once again (after the Metal Virus).

I think the main reason Amy didn't run to hug him when he freed her was because she immediately saw he was somehow struggling and likely didn't want to hurt him. (But then realized she wouldn't have been able to touch him, anyway. 🥲) Although it would've been kinda funny if she HAD tried to hug him and just fell straight through. 😂

I think it's worth noticing that Sonic has had this response to Amy's hugs several times lately. Instead of avoiding them, he lets her hug him and actually puts an arm around her in return. I've got a couple more examples from IDW.

And it's... Amy never was created to be an "obssesive girl" "an obssesive fangirl" "an obssesive girl who only thinks about Sonic and nothing else"

And this is a consequence of the bad localization Sonic had in the West and how they didn't understand Amy's character, a girl who was created with many qualities japanese people love but the west considers it "weird", still affects her character to this day at this point we're many hear by mouth and mouth how Amy is but never had the thought of thinking "all of this is true?"

Thanks to this majority of western fans thought Sonic was always mad at Amy when in reality that was not the original intention and destroys all the concept of "obssesive" and "fangirl" were she cared for birdie and protected Gama from Sonic.

A girl who always tries to be better, helping people many wouldn't pay attention but she knows they need help.

A girl who is conscious she has to work hard than his friends with super powers

And Sonic being one of her main inspirations 'cause he represents what she wants to become: being free, going on your own having adventures, the excitement everything against the boring

And you would say "but in heroes she was an obssesive fangirl😭"

No, the fandom scaled the proportions and couldn't handle a single innofensive joke

Amy knew exactly exactly what she was doing telling him to "Marry him" as a joke. He would low his defenses and cause him to feel embarrassed and nervous 'cause she knows he's terrible at romance or i'm general, feelings

And many forgot that in the game Amy didn't know exactly why Sonic, Tails and knuckles we're together. In the beggining Amy saw Sonic in the paper and told us she hasn't seen Sonic in weeks and when she saw them thought they were just hanging out.

I'm talking about the girl who all the game supported,encouraging Cream and Big to rescue Chocola and Froggy and they needed someone as determinante, courageous as Amy who reminded her friends how brave they are

She even shows appreciation and love for the landscapes (just like Sonic)

"But- but in later games she was so obssesive and fangirl for Sonic 😭" Again bad localization for the west when in the original sources she was handled bit better than the West.

Also, Western has an obssesive to always point out the bad interpretations of female characters and saying why they are "the worst" "the most annoying characters" when at the same time try so hard to prove why this interpretation of a male character is not "bad enough" or "not the worst" and why even with bad characterizations he is still the best **cough****cough** Sonic and shadow respectively **cough****cough**

The character is not perfect, that's a reality.

She has strenghts and flaws that made her unique on her own. Her love for her friends (yes, this includes Sonic), the animals, the good and "Bad" robots and even characters who we're "devil"... She saw good, hope and love for them. She decides to help them being at their sides to show them there's always the option to chose a good path

She is the heart of all teams, she brings happines and hope to everyone. That's why all the cast loves and appreciates her and never refered to her like fandom does. That should tell you something

Also I read your other sonamy posts and what is the game that gives the most sonamy vibe to you? Thank you for your time. I am a pretty big sonamy shipper so i was wondering why this ship and why do you support it? And how happy are you that sonamy is actually canon?

Me:

1. When I first saw Sonamy, I just thought it was cute. Amy was so forward that I felt that was kinda odd, and Sonic seemed to freak out a little too but he was never rude to her affections. In fact, it looked like he just submitted to them and then tried to get away. It seemed like a typical boy thing to me, when a girl flirts for them to rush off. I first saw Sonamy through Sonic X. I felt like I wanted to support Amy because her intentions weren’t bad, and Sonic didn’t seem too deterred from her either. So, after I watched the whole thing (very young, mind you) I saw so many times where Sonic valued Amy’s safety and happiness, even over his own, which made me think... maybe he does have a hidden feeling for her? There weren’t ‘fandoms’ at the time, so I just kept these cute thoughts to myself. But I was into other shows at the time as well, and my own OCs to really ‘ship’ but I did support her and their growing bond :) It took more time before I was like, “Woah, why aren’t they growing more together like in Sonic X?” When I played some games, I got even more curious. “What does the Japanese script say?” And the more I studied them, the more I realized how subtle their relationship actually was. We only see the surface level, of Amy’s doting nature and Sonic’s introverted aloofness... but when you really search for it, there’s a lot of feeling there... just private and between those two ^///^

2. Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed my Sonamy posts! I really like Unleashed because of the emotions you can see a lot better through the beautiful animation. You can tell Sonic really didn’t want Amy to run off, but Chip convinced him he was a hideous, scary monster and so he let her go, and it really hurt his pride to do so. I think there’s a side to Sonic that is shown wonderfully in this sequence with him and Amy that he really does value his time together with her and even some vulnerability when he won’t tell her it’s him who saved her. He doesn’t want her to pity him, he wants her to see him as her handsome hero, and I think that image bothered him. However, in the game, Amy continually reassures him. It’s so cute, she knows he doesn’t like the form, so she says she does prefer him as himself, knowing he feels that way too--but then beautifully reminds him that it’s not his looks she’s into, but his noble heart/free-spirited soul. I think that, during this game, the writers knew Sonic was struggling with his self-image and the darkness inside him, even submitting to fear at one point in the game. This game brought so much emotion out of Sonic, that he needed Amy’s words and presence to be there for him. That’s why I love that game and it’s powerful scenes of them! They seem cute and innocent on the outside, but Amy truly is a light in the darkness for Sonic. Always positive and supportive, which is what he really needed at the time.

3. I’m a big fan too! I’ve researched it so much, you know? It’s hard to hate something you understand. And though there are still many secrets SEGA keeps to themselves (much like Nintendo or other Japanese children’s games companies, their heroic men are usually hard to read sometimes... and they keep their ‘love lives’ private to the characters. XP Lame! lol They’re like celebrities, we want to know everything! haha) but that doesn’t mean they don’t leak out a cute insight or two. ;) I think this is the most time I’ve ever devoted to a ship, and that’s why it’s my number one, though I do have many ships xD I support them because, in the end, they have so much--AND I MEAN A WHOLE TON OF A LOT--of potential in how they can grow, have beautifully written and animated scenes together that really teach about good and healthy relationships between girls and boys, and also just their dynamic in general. Sonic has always been about ‘breaking stereotypes’ and ‘rebel generation’. I think Amy being so proactive in ‘chasing the boy’ is very different from the typical “The Flower doesn’t chase the Bee” standpoint. That’s what makes Amy’s core character about in Sonic’s universe, she’s not your typical ‘shy Japanese wise but strong woman figure’. She’s ‘outgoing Japanese girl who can be naive at times but her heart is her most powerful weapon, even if she does carry a huge hammer and is a ‘girl’ figure, not a woman just yet.’ I think this makes her so much more than what we usually see in video games, trying to make role models, but Sonic IS NOT A ROLE MODEL. He’s the outcast, the ‘in and out’ kinda hero. He doesn’t stick around for praise, or go rogue and turn anti-hero. (Though he apparently can and has sometimes.) He’s just the teenage rebel child that doesn’t live by the rules, but still does what’s right. (the bad boy that does good things lol Robin Hood and what not.) So I see Amy as fitting into the genre, and they specifically designed her to be all about Sonic, but to be different than the usual take on that ‘main heroine lead’ type of deal. And as her creator once said, “Isn’t that more interesting?” They purposefully made a ‘different’ kind of girl character than what was around at the time, because they wanted Amy to be interesting.

4. I personally don’t like saying, ‘It’s canon!’ because it’s not really canon until it happens. Sonic has yet to reveal his full feelings and confess them (either verbally or non-verbally) to Amy just yet. (I know the french scene says he did, but hear me out.) Sonic has hidden emotions regarding Amy, yes, that is true. However, they’re not a traditional couple. They are confirmed to go on dates, you can date people but not be in a committed relationship to them yet. I think they need time to develop and grow more. It IS CANON that Sonic has feelings for Amy, but it is NOT CANON that they are ‘together together’ yet. Still, the fact that they share feelings for each other is enough to grow excited about, but I honestly just can’t wait to see how they build to showing that more on the screen... so it can really be announced as “CANON!” lol

I hope that makes sense! Thanks for your questions ;)b To me, Sonic and Amy are growing towards Canon, it’s just a slow process, surprisingly, lol. Though, I think at their pace/in their case, it’s faster than the eye can see!

Honestly, these moments are too precious, how can you not see a future where they have one another and are together?

After Sonic rescued Amy from drowning in Sonic X Episode 9, he took the bracelet she was still holding onto, repaired it, and wore it. 

In Japan, if a man accepts a woman’s chocolate on Valentine’s Day, it means he reciprocates and accepts her feelings. Since men will only accept homemade chocolate from the one they’re truly interested in. Then on White Day, men who got chocolate on Valentine’s Day will give a gift three times valued. 

Even though Amy’s bracelet isn’t a box of homemade chocolates, Sonic taking the time to repair her gift and wear it is a huge step in the field of romance. 

Since it’s one of the first times we’re shown reciprocation from Sonic’s end of the relationship. 

Amy has always been there cheering him on and she’s called him her hero since they were little. But this is Amy’s first physical gift to him that symbolizes how much she cares about his safety. She made that bracelet in hopes it would keep him SAFE when he’s in the water. But Eggman destroyed it in front of her eyes and he couldn’t do anything to save it without her getting hurt in the moment. 

Then as he feared she would drown in the ocean, Sonic dived in to save her. Much to the horror of Tails and Chris who both know of Sonic’s inability to swim. (Or at the very least: his hatred of water in general.) 

Sonic risked drowning himself in order to save Amy. 

When he saw her holding onto the bracelet in the water, he must’ve realized at that moment that she was genuinely, truly, in love with him. Her feelings weren’t just an infatuation with him. It wasn’t a fleeting crush she’d get over as she got older. She held onto that bracelet she made him like it was her lifeline. 

And Sonic found a way to repair it just so he could wear it. 

Sonic is not well known as an open book when it comes to his emotions and while he’s definitely flirty, he’s not a big Casanova heartthrob who is bold enough to drop the L-Bomb with girls he’s not intimately involved with. But when it comes to Amy: He has a romantic, sweet, and tender side to him that he only showcases when she’s involved. 

So in my humble shipper opinion: This episode of Sonic X was the first TRUE showcase of Sonic’s feelings for Amy going beyond mere friendship and it showed the viewers in the end he accepted her gift and her feelings for him.

When it comes to fanworks, I’m deeply dissatisfied with those which depict Amy as a scolded woman who is on a repentance journey looking to become someone finally worthy of love and wherein Sonic has only recently started to like her due to her new, ashamed personality.

This genre of sonamy has some of my least favorite works by far.

Note: If you’re “not woke enough for this” then you should just skip this entirely.

While both versions are protective, I like how Sonic shifts Knuckles’ attention back to him and reminds him that they’re still fighting. It reminds me of how Sonic stopped Jet from harassing / potentially hurting Amy in Sonic Zero Gravity.
