Since I have no stake in the game, I haven’t been paying much attention to the drama. Apparently, the inclusion of a transgender character has ruffled some feathers, because, well, there’s magic to change a person’s sex, so being transgender in the game’s canon is very easily dealt with–as opposed to in real life, where transitioning costs thousands upon thousands of dollars and years of a trans person’s life.

Some folks are calling it immersion-breaking or lore-breaking, but I’d like to know how the character is being written before I pass that sort of judgment, because, again, just because sex changing magic exists doesn’t mean trans folk can’t be born into the world. It just means trans folk can much more easily transition, and you’re probably way less likely to see any pre-transition trans folk.

So if they’re writing the character as post-transition, they aren’t really breaking any lore. The character used magic to transition. Simple as. They’re still trans.

If they’re writing the character as pre-transition, they have to have a reason why the character hasn’t used magic to change their sex. Could be that they aren’t a magic-user. Could be that they’re mysteriously immune to all spells. Could be that they had an adverse affect to the magic. There are reasons they could come up with, though I don’t know if any of the ones I mentioned would be lore-breaking or go against canon, as I don’t know the canon of the game.
