"The prodigal daughter?" Mulder asked, toeing off his sneakers. Drying his hand against his pant leg, he leaned over the table to shake Melissa's hand. "It's good to meet you."
"I wouldn't have missed this for the world." Melissa studied Mulder's face with fascination. "I just had to meet the man who knocked up my baby sister."
"Melissa..." Scully sighed. Her sister never minced words.
"Sorry," Melissa said, blatantly unapologetic. "I'm still in a state of shock."
AU-- Post-Miracle Man Mulder and Scully hop in the sack, accidentally make a baby, and kick off a slow-burn chain of endearing (and dangerous) events leading up to the inevitable.

UnnamedÂ
Melissa Scully is not at all what he had imagined, and he takes umbrage at her new age methods, since her sister clearly canât.
âI need to do more than just wave my hands in the air.â His arm drops to his side, and he turns away. But try as he might, the first words Melissa said to him ring in his ears with proof of something beyond his comprehension.
He turns back and belatedly rebukes her. âShe never talked about you,â He doesnât understand why he feels the need to strike out at her. But someone has to pay the price.
âProbably not,â Melissa responds with an enigmatic smile. âBut she talks a lot about you.â
One Breath Mulder rages against injustice, for the truth-- against himself.
Let Everything Happen to You
For almost three years now, since Scully had been taken, theyâd found one excuse or another to meet semi-regularly. Sometimes for coffee, sometimes a walk on The Mall or a visit to a book shop, an antique store. And then, after the cancer diagnosis, monthly dinners. Those had begun, he recalled, as a way for her to glean information from him that her daughter wasnât providing. Even after heâd confessed his own ignorance to her, theyâd kept the standing date. It was nice to have someone to commiserate with; to be each otherâs sounding board.
Mulder loved his mother, but their relationship was, by necessity, a distant one. Theyâd tried to repair the damage caused by Samanthaâs abduction, after heâd returned from Oxford, but every secret, every indiscretion heâd dug up since discovering the X-Files had made it increasingly difficult. Maggie Scully had, with her quiet strength, provided him the maternal comfort heâd been missing for so long.
Mulder and Maggie frequently have meals together, discussing his struggles, faults, failures, and-- at last-- relationship.

blurry: how the world should look without her
Melissa knows, too. âWhy is it so much easier for you to run around trying to get even than just expressing to her how you feel?â she snaps. Heâs ready to take their revenge and run, but her words full-on stop him. Sheâs dying, and if he doesnât go now, then the last time he ever saw her will be when her blood was taken. He didnât even accept the invitation to go when they pulled the plug. The last conversation they ever had is about Duane Barry. The last thing heâll ever hear her say is his name.Â
One Breath Mulder realizes he loves Scully.
the possible impossible things
They make it out. Somehow, they make it out. Melissa is wobbly and weak, and ends up leaning on Mulder on the way out. (She hugs Mulder, too, right off the bat, extraordinarily grateful to the both of them.) But they slip out to the car with no mishaps, Melissa and Scully climbing into the backseat. As they get settled, Scully leans across and hugs her sister again. After years of loss and mourning and losing leads, here she is. Sheâs thin under her arms, worryingly so, and she still looks weak, but sheâs okay and whole and alive.
AU-- S7 Melissa is alive.
Half-Light Universe
"It's convenient," Melissa cracks when they arrive, leaning down to kiss Scullyâs cheek. "We only have to make one trip to both meet our new nephew."
âFox told us it was a boy last night,â Samantha adds from the door. âI just want to apologize in advance for how crazy the Mulder genes are going to make this kid, Scully.â
âHey!â Mulder protests.
Scully laughs, even though she almost feels like crying. These aunts that William never would've met, and they're here now. It feels a little miraculous. Too many miracles to count, now.Â

âAunt Missy said you gave her flowers,â she replied, looking up at him with quintessential childlike earnestness. âThatâs a boyfriend thing.â
Mulder darted a brief, nervous glance Scullyâs way before facing Lucy again. âUh, yeah, I did. She was sick, and I wanted to show her how much I care about her, and how glad I am that sheâs better.â
âDo you love her?â
Mulder was saved from having to answer that question by the timely arrival of Maggie. âLucy!â she mock scolded as she scooped her little granddaughter up. âGive your Aunt Dana and Fox some privacy. Iâm sure they have a lot of catching up to do.â

The Concept of Dualism (Ao3)
They were more than halfway to the base, and Scullyâs arguments against her sisterâs plan of nursing them both back to health in Scullyâs apartment were getting weaker and more grasping.Â
âYou know I donât, Dana,â she said, âand anyway, he doesnât have anywhere else to go.âÂ
Scully couldnât argue with that. Melissa turned onto the exit for the base.Â
âWhere is he going to sleep?â Scully asked.Â
Melissa sniffed a small laugh, then said, âthe couch.â
âThen where are you going to sleep?âÂ
âTrim those toenails, little sister, Iâm bunking with you.â
When they were kids, Scully and Melissa had been forced to share a bed on family vacations; Melissa always complained that Scully kicked her in the middle of the night and dug her toenails into Missyâs shins.Â
Scully couldnât help but glance down to consider her pedicure. Melissa saw her look and stuck out her tongue at her. Some things in life had changed. Some things hadn't.Â

Old Chem Universe
Mulder rocked back a little on his heels. Dianaâs folks had died before they got together and he hadnât had any girlfriends before her serious enough for parental vetting. The last time heâd met a womanâs parents, he was standing in Missy Sanderâs living room pinning a homecoming corsage on her velvet dress while her mother hovered nearby.
Nevertheless, Scully was important to him, and her parents were important to her.Â
AU-- Mulder and Scully, chemist professors, bond over their draw to the unknown.
In the Valley of the Sun
Samantha had read a poem by an amateur poet named Tim Pratt called Scientific Romance (Mulder having confessed to her later that night that it only seemed right to have had a reading replete with scientific notation for a wedding between two people such as themselves). Melissa had read words as old as the institution of marriage itself and they exchanged simple rings and had eyes only for each other. Scully handed her bouquet -- a small posy of wild swamp azalea and yellow flag that Melissa had picked the hour before -- to her new sister in law as she strode up the peeling wooden steps of the house. Mulder had insisted upon carrying her over the threshold and Melissa and Samantha had stood back thoughtfully, and were now sitting closely on the beach, heads bent together, talking in hushed tones.
AU-- Mulder and Scully, archaeologists, find love in the digs.
@welsharcher's Grateful
âSheâll want to see you, Fox.â
Mulder closed his eyes, offering a polite nod and hoping that would be the end of it.

AU: Melissa Didn't Die and Birth Day
It takes her an hour, but Melissaâs jeep finally rumbles up the drive, too fast, like she owns the place. The older sister emerges, swinging out her door almost before the jeep has stopped. âSomebody having a baby over here?â she calls to them. She drags out an enormous purse, a kind of floppy tote in purple tie-dye.
Scully is bent over the porch rail, weight on her forearms, Mulderâs hands at her back. âAre you here to help me or to paint the garage?â she asks, tilting her chin at Melissaâs outfit: baggy, paint-stained overalls and a bandana.
AU-- Melissa survived Paper Clip.

The midwife arrives at nine, certified, but illegal in the state of Virginia. She is a spunky woman of sixty, well vetted by both the Gunmen and Gibson, who lets her in and smiles at whatever he hears in her mind. He stays by the door when the excitement moves upstairs.

âWhat happened? Has she been shot?â Thereâs a rustle in the background and Mrs. Scullyâs voice picks up speed. Impatience dominates her breathing and Mulder pushes his fist into his eye, hurting himself. Mrs. Scully doesnât need to listen to his tears.
Memento Mori Mulder calls Maggie.
Things You Forget
âHello Mrs. Scully,â Mulder says with a goofy, happy smile. Scully watches him eye Bill; thereâs a flicker of recognition in his eyes, but itâs not enough. This Mulder doesnât know her brother. Yet.
âIâm sorry, mom. Hey, Bill. There was an accident and I completely forgot to call you.â
âAn accident? Are you all right?â
âI bet it was his fault,â Bill says.
Maggie, Bill, Scully, and Mulder's amnesia have dinner.
The Best Christmas Yet
He couldn't have asked for more than this. Luring her to a haunted house, disguising his desire to spend time with her over the holidays behind a romantic ghost story, was a spur-of-the-moment thing. When they got out of there and she drove off, he didn't blame her one bit. He blamed himself, though. Then she showed up here at his apartment. The book she got him is a nice touch. Having her here sleeping on his couch, however, is the real gift.
AU-- Post-HTGSC Maggie Scully combines Christmas with Mulder's Jewish traditions.
It's Just A Picture
âWe need a wedding photo,â he quickly turns to Mrs. Scully. âFor a case. We fly out to California tomorrow morning.â
Pre-Arcadia Mulder and Scully need a wedding photo.
Merry Christmas, Darling - Chapter 21
"Dana, come on. Admit it." It's as though she's 15 again and Melissa is pestering her about her crush.
"I admit nothing," she says, a smile creeping into her voice.
"So if I wanted to ask him out on a date you'd be okay with it?" It stings. It really stings. They'd fit well together, of course. Two peas in a pod. But the mere thought feels like a punch in her gut.
"Relax, Dana," Melissa says, laughing softly. "You should have seen your face. He's all yours."
Scully buys a tree with Mulder (and survives Melissa's teasing.)
It's A Match
âBut Iâm right,â she states. Itâs not a question to her. She grins at him, poking his arm. âYouâre in love with my little sister.â
AU-- Melissa Scully is alive, with an eagle eye for Mulder's feelings.
Angel Wings
He shouldnât be here. The thought gnaws at him as he tosses and turns on Mrs. Scullyâs couch. He knew he should have declined the invitation for Scullyâs sake. Except that she was the one who asked him, her eyes soft and pleading with him.
A fluff-and-angst piece, with Mulder caught between two feuding siblings (and a destroyed ornament.)
Merry Christmas, Darling - Chapter 1
Itâs just for the holidays, to fool her relatives. Oh, sheâs seen how her aunts and cousins look at her now that sheâs with Mulder. She expects cards and flowers once she goes public with their break-up. Or maybe they can get fake married and keep doing this. The thought makes her giddy. One ridiculous sentiment at a time, Dana, she chastises herself. When she looks at Mulder, he is grinning down at her.
Mulder and Scully pretend to be a couple for the family Christmas party.
Be Brave
Theyâre chatty, her children and their spouses. Only Fox and Dana are quiet, subdued. Her youngest daughter has carried this sadness around with her for far longer than Maggie thought possible.
Mulder and Scully are observed by Maggie, Bill, and Charlie at a Christmas get-together.
Christmas With the Scullys and Mistletoe Musings
âThere you are.â Her mother walks out of the kitchen, drying her hands on a towel. âOh, Fox,â she says, touching his arm. âI heard youâre not well.â A loud snort comes from the direction of the living room. Scully rolls her eyes. Bill Jr. wouldnât dare say anything in front of their mother, no matter how much he dislikes Mulder.
âI hit my head,â Mulder says, nevertheless smiling at her mother and shaking her hand. That, however, is not enough for her. She draws him close and gives him a bear hug. âIâll be fine, Mrs. Scully,â he says, his voice muffled.
An injured Mulder is brought home for Christmas by a determined Scully.
O Holy No
âHey.â Mulder is convinced heâs stepped into an alternate universe. Thereâs Bill Jr. and instead of a greeting growl, he gets a smile. A big one. So big in fact that Mulder even wonders if that is the same Bill Jr. heâs met before.
âHello,â he says cautiously. âIâm, umâŚâ
âSpooky,â Bill says. âCome on in. Weâve been waiting for you.â This cannot be real. He fell asleep somewhere and never woke up. Heâs dreaming. But when Bill hauls him inside and into a hug, he has to concede that this is in fact happening.
A multi-chapter with just about everything in it: jealousy and Diana Fowley, UST to RST, Maggie and Bill Scully, Christmas tree shopping in California-- the whole nine yards.
The Year of Firsts
âHappy New Year, Mrs. Scully,â he replies, glad that heâs wearing a shirt and not just his boxers. âWe- this wasnât planned.â He points to his injured arm and Mrs. Scully drops her purse on the kitchen table to examine it more closely. Like mother, like daughter.
Post-Millennium Mulder is caught in Scully's apartment.
Family Principles
"I saw you staring at me." Mulder's voice is a soft murmur as he puts his arms around her, holding her close. She must have been so lost in thought that she didn't even notice him walk over to her. "Do I have something on my face?" He nuzzles her neck, making her giggle.
"You do," she says, swatting at his hand. They may have been a couple for a while, but here, in front of everyone and her family, their public display of affection is new and she doesn't yet know how she feels about it. "You're grinning."
"I'm happy," he says simply. "Your mother throws great parties."
AU-- S9 Mulder's (and William's) first Christmas with the Scullys.
Adventures With Uncle Bill
Still holding his son on his hip, Mulder offers his hand to Bill. The other manâs handshake is strong and full of determination. Scully has assured him that Bill â much to everyoneâs surprise â is amazing with children.
AU-- S9 Mulder is reluctant to let Bill Scully babysit.
Birthday Surprise
âA what?â
âA surprise birthday party.â Scully sighs, leaning her head against Mulderâs shoulder. âFor you,â she adds, unnecessarily. After all, his birthday is in three days. For the first time in a while, heâs anticipating it. He could do without growing older, but this is his first birthday as a dad. Itâs the first time theyâre celebrating something together with William, apart from his birth.
AU-- S9 Bill decides to throw a surprise birthday party for Mulder.
William's Fox
No matter how difficult the relationship between Mulder and Bill, heâs never been anything but friendly with William. âItâs a UFO.â That gets Mulder a glance, though. He shrugs. William loves space, the stars and the universe. Heâs his son, all right.
AU-- S9 William shows his art to the family.
Everything I Ever Wanted
âI wonder what he put on that list,â Scully says.
âI bet heâs asking for a sibling,â Tara says, not being subtle at all. Mulder squeezes Scullyâs side, letting her know that heâs here and that she should pay no mind to Taraâs words.
AU-- the Mulder-Scully fam visit Santa Claus.
The Day I First Saw You
âIt has to be this tree,â the woman - Missy, Mulder thinks - sobs and gives Langley a death glare. Mulder doubts he can even see it, considering how fogged up his glasses are by now.
âWe need this tree,â Frohike says, stepping forward. Itâs three against two and Mulder has never been one to fight unfair.
âActually, we donât,â he says, causing everyone to stare at him. The woman, the tiny, feisty one, looks him up and down as if appraising him. He wants her to like what he sees even though sheâs a complete stranger.

Back to the lab, he thinks, but then the weekend goes by and he hears nothing; and Maggie comes by the hospital, having heard nothing; and his mother comes; and Skinner comes, and says, Sheâs missing, Mulder. She left her badge and cell phone but took her gun.
A week passes. He has a hard time getting up in the mornings. The hospital staff does not discuss discharging him; they do not even think about it.

âDana, this is lovely. And I can assure you, as the feminist mother who raised you, that I know just what The Bachelor is and isnât. But could you put Fox on the phone please?â

Missing Scenes and hospital
Fresh from weeping at her bedside, the gaze he casts upward at Maggie is swollen and inflamed with grief. He dare not speak lest the offering of a maternal comfort open the floodgates. She spares him any sort of pity, instead clasping his left hand between both of hers, the brush of her thumb over his ring finger anything but subtle.
Her face is cast upward towards Mary, and her eyes are closed.
âI feel the need to apologize, for my son.âÂ
Redux II Mulder's grief is inconsolable.
"He's pampering me, let him be."
Dana Scully is not one to be placated. Or babied. Â Spoiling her requires a certain finesse--strategic enough so as not to be blatant; intuitive enough, though, that the pampering comes not from extravagance, but by the surreptitious gathering of knowledge of her carefully guarded indulgencess: soft clean sheets, a stack of medical journals hot off the press, Godiva ice cream, the salty humid air from a beach balcony, crisp, buttered asparagus, and Mulder, to name a few.
The last of these luxuries is currently failing at wiping burnt butter grease from her formerly spotless countertop when Scully, fresh from the hospital, comes wobbling in arm-in-arm with her mother, whoâs exasperated expression at the unfamiliar acrid smell of the place is written clearly across her face.
Post-Tithonus Maggie is exasperated with her daughter's partner.
Susan Proto's Barbecue Series 01 - Birthday Barbecue
I watch as she follows Mom down the small flight of stairs and runs into the arms of her nephews, Daniel and Matthew, and niece, Briana. Her face lights up from the sheer joy of seeing these children surround her with their hugs and kisses.
Then I see Charlie and Billy rise from their seats and walk over to her. She tries to untangle herself from the embraces of the children in order to give them a proper greeting, but gives up and simply reaches over the little ones' heads and embraces her brothers in a hug.
Karen and Tara soon take their husbands' places, and I watch the women greet one another warmly. Some minutes pass by when I hear my name spoken aloud.

"My mother, Bill, Tara and the boys? Five. Charlie and Michelle? Who knows. Their flight gets in at four fifteen and they're renting a car."
"And who are their offspring again?"
She tossed him an impatient look. "Timothy and Andrew."
"And Bill and Tara have Matt and-"
"Connor. He's the littlest, besides William. And then she's pregnant again. Five months, I think."
"Good grief. You're telling me there'll be five little boys under the age of eight in this house tonight?"
"Seven," she sighed, returning to the bathroom to finish her makeup.

âLong time no see,â he said, smiling down at her. She wiped her eyes on the back of her hand, nodding her head with a watery chuckle.
âYeah, Iâd say,â she said. He nodded, a little sadness creeping into his features, but he banished it with a head shake before looking up at Mulder.
âHusband?â he asked. They both shook their heads.

âLike what?â
Mulder takes a deep breath and racks his brain for an example of a recent case that isnât, well, a global conspiracy that involved Mulder ending up in a gulag, or the trauma from his sisterâs abduction. Mulder might not have a ton of experience with nice Christmas dinners, but those donât seem like appropriate topics. âA couple months ago we investigated possible witchcraft in a plastic surgery unit.â

The taller, red-haired man standing there seemed a bit taken back but he recovered quickly and stuck out his hand, "you're Mulder right?"

Charlie and Bill enter the house just after ten. Their wives are chatting in the living room, where Jane is teaching Matthew how to play Five Card Stud. William and Simon are setting the table while Scully cuts up a pineapple. Mulder is making scrambled eggs.
"Hey," Charlie says, setting several large brown paper bags on the counter. "We didn't know what people wanted, so we got everything."
"Four kinds of cream cheese," Bill adds, placing two bags next to the others. "And two dozen bagels."

@laurencem's all I want (Ao3)
Will raises a single inquisitive eyebrow. âWhat sins, Mom?â
Scully rolls her eyes, smiling. âIgnore him. I was a model of propriety, thank you very much.â
âSays the girl who pretended to know nothing about baseball just to get into Marcus Warrenâs pants.â Charlie raises the glass to his lips, lowering it again at the look that passes between his sister and her other half. âWhat?â
âYouâve got to be kidding me.â Mulder tips back in his chair, shaking his head melodramatically. âYou have got to be kidding me.â
AU-- William, his girlfriend, and Uncle Charlie stop by for Christmas.
Violetta_Valery's bittersweetness of pie
Mulder never noticed there was blood oozing from his nose into his beard from when the door hit. He is numb again, staring a bit lost between the two people staring back, and he only returns to the moment when he feels Scullyâs hands on his cheek, holding him still while she presses a bunch of paper napkins to stop the bleeding. She guides him to sit in their booth, him by her side while she still holds the napkins, Charlie opposite them. He can tell by her touch sheâs not angry at the rampant, but rather frustrated. Disappointed, maybe, and worried.
âMan, I never thought this is how Iâd finally get to meet you!â
âIâm uh⌠I just came here for pie.â
âMomâs talked so much about you. She actually misses you badly, man!â the remark earns Charlie a warning stare from Scully, but that doesnât seem to bother him the least âProbably as much as Danes here!â

Margaret âMaggieâ Scully knew all her children very well.Â
But especially her daughters. They were two peas in a pod. To that end, both of Maggieâs daughters thought alike. Sometimes more than they realized. What amused Maggie the most was that they had both recently confided in her about the same thing. Even separately.Â
It happened that Maggie's daughters were both fond of the same person.

@touchstoneaf's Amor Fati: The Fated Love
In dark of night, after the Gunmen had buried themselves in a corner with the laptop and Skinner had gone to the other room to make his evening ablutions, Maggie beckoned the two former agents over to the couch with her free hand. The other had been pinned when Will had fallen asleep in his Nanaâs arms. Approaching, they peered over the back of the sofa to view the limp toddler, undone by exhaustion and the combined impact of five new minds in one small space. He was fully snoring right now, around a hand jammed into a slack, rosebud mouth. His tousled, ginger head dangled from the back of his grandmotherâs forearm like a heavy growth as Maggie met their eyes over the little boyâs sauce-speckled face.
