Jo sighed faintly, looking down at the pile of books she had picked out. She really couldn’t afford to keep doing this.
The blonde at the register – Rose, her name was Rose, Jo had learned that on her third visit – smiled as Jo approached. “Back again?” She teased, her tongue poking out between her teeth. Just ask her out, Jo. You can do it.
“Just had a few more to pick up that I forgot the other day,” Jo said brightly in return. “How’re you?”
“I’m alright. Finally got Luna to the vet, turns out she’s just stress licking.”
“Oh, that’s brilliant!” They’d had a long conversation about Rose’s cat one of the last times Jo had been in. It’d come up when Jo had bought a cat calendar just to justify coming into the store. “I told you she was alright.”
“Yeah, now I just have to figure out why she’s stressed. What does a cat who doesn’t do anything or go anywhere have to be stressed about?”
“Maybe she’s politically aware,” Jo said with a smirk, and Rose laughed as she finished checking Jo out.
“Maybe.” She bagged the books, handing them over. “Have a good day.”
“Yeah, you too.” Jo sighed faintly as she left. Maybe next time.
Next time was about a week later – the soonest Jo could justify going back. “Forget a few more books?” Rose asked when she saw Jo perusing the shelves.
“A lot of memory problems, me. I’d forget my glasses if I couldn’t get out of bed without them.”
She picked out a couple of books, stared at them for a minute, then sighed as she brought them to the counter. “You know,” Rose said thoughtfully as she rang Jo up. “You’re probably going to go broke if you don’t ask me out soon.
“Yeah, prob–” Jo cut off mid word, her mouth hanging open. Rose smirked, bagging the books.
“I’m guessing I’m paying since you’ve probably spent at least an entire paycheck here. What’re you doing Friday?”
