All of the doppelgangers infiltrating Central City, at the command of their master… They liked to make fun of the way their victims had nicknamed the invasion the Metapocalypse.
Iris and Cisco would like that name, Caitlin thinks. Or maybe not. They might not see the fun in it right now, since… since Barry—
She struggles against the wood of the desk, pulls on the cuffs again. It’s no use. It’s smart to keep her hands moving, though. She needs to consider the blood flow. She used to have to do the same for Barry, stretching his muscles and moving his limbs around when he was bed-ridden in his coma. What was the point of all that if he just died anyway?
She never thought she’d have to do it on herself. Maybe she should be used to this, being taken like this, but she doesn’t want any of them to get used to it. She never wants this to happen to them again.
Zoom likes her, though. He loves her, he says. Caitlin doesn’t want whatever disgusting version of love this is. She knows what love is, and this isn’t it. It’s one of the only things she can’t bring herself to doubt here, because doubting that love would make liars out of everyone that ever loved her back. She didn’t want to do that. She’s a liar, she lied to Iris for so long, Iris lied to her dad about them for so long, Caitlin’s probably gonna lie when they ask what he’d done to her, but they never lied about how much they loved each other. None of them would do that.
When he talks, she pretends it’s Cisco, loudly chewing on twizzlers and ranting about the continuity errors in Friday the 13th franchise, tapping on her knuckles as he softly holds her hand. Sometimes, he gives her the silent treatment until she agrees to binge-watch a series with him. Caitlin would never tell him she’s actually grateful for that, because it’s annoying, but also… it helps her see the world the way he does. He reminds her to have fun, he always has. Besides, debating him about character analysis always makes him get loud and rambly. She wouldn’t give up listening to him go off for the world.
When he smiles, she pretends it’s Iris, that her perfect teeth are blinding Caitlin with a grin that melts away all the grief and bitterness, stealing food off her plate while looking at Caitlin with those dark brown eyes Caitlin could get lost in, with her feet kicking Caitlin’s playfully under the table. Iris might be the least academia-educated among them, but does she know Caitlin thinks she’s the smartest anyway? She’s good with people, she’s charming, she’s just… all-seeing, it feels like. That beautiful, show-stopping smile is what made Barry fall in love with her; it’s something he had in common with Eddie, Cisco, and Caitlin herself.
When he looks at her, she pretends it’s Eddie. Dead, gone, cold Eddie— one of her favorite ghosts. She pretends it’s his pretty lashes making baby blue heart-eyes at her, the way he did with everyone, and that he’s staring at her because he says it helps him play darts if he just pretends it’s the barrel of a gun and he has to protect them from something. He was selfless like that. His selflessness, his need to protect them, no matter the cost… his undying love for them all… it’s what killed him. He’s not the only one.
When he… touches her, with those hot hands on her body and lightning on his fingertips, he could kill her in a zeptosecond if he really wanted, if she found a way to fight back that didn’t elevate the experience for him, and she wouldn’t know she was dying, so no one would ever know how he pressed her head down on that bed she’d been chained to in his lair and that he’d told her he loved her as he ground his way in—
She pretends it’s Ronnie, when he makes her blood boil under him. Only then is the heat bearable. Since Ronnie was warm-blooded even before there was actual fire in him, meanwhile Caitlin’s personality was guarded and icy before she had Killer Frost’s voice echoing in her thoughts, so he had a knack for melting down her defenses, making her laugh, and she got skilled at keeping him steady, making sure he got work done. Before she met him, she never really had smile lines, but now that he’s gone, evidence of how important he was to her was permanently etched into the creases in her face.
After Ronnie and Eddie died, Iris had told her that Ronnie had went out of his way to thank her for making Caitlin laugh when he couldn’t. That they had talked about loving the sound of her laughter, bonded over them both realizing they had each made a game out of making Caitlin smile wide enough to see her canine teeth because they both thought she just looked so cute and kittenish with her fangs out.
Will she ever smile like that again? Will she ever kiss Iris again, or hold Cisco’s hand again? And if she does ever get to touch them after all this is over… will their warmth make her sick to her stomach like his does?
No, no, no, that can’t happen. She won’t let that happen. She doesn’t want to be afraid of them, she isn’t afraid of them, she can come out of this whole, can’t she? Won’t she? That’s assuming she’ll ever get out of these cuffs.
She keeps thinking about Killer Frost. After all, he wants her to be just like all the other ravaged girls he kept locked in cages, whether it was carbine plexiglass or dirty claws of half-broken metal or her own body chained to a bedframe, and, no matter what she does, he keeps getting what he wants.
He grins at her and comes down to her eye-level, kissing her, hard. It’s better to close her eyes and try to forget where she is, who he is. He mistakes it for pleasure, the way they always do, as a manifestation of her own desire for him, like Everyman. It doesn’t matter all the times she tried to push him— them— off. They’ve decided she wants this, somewhere deep down within, and he’s more than happy to dig for that place inside her. So, that’s that.
He tries to hide himself behind her teeth, like a secret. It is a secret. No one should ever know, she doesn’t want to know. She doesn’t want to see her filthy reflection in the beady white specks of starlight trapped in those black eyes. She wants it to be Ronnie’s hands warming up her skin, Iris’ smile against her quivering and bitten lips, Cisco’s voice being the symphony in her ears instead of the thunderous beat of her own heart that he could take out of her bruised chest at any moment, and pretty boy Eddie’s ocean eyes she should’ve just drowned in.
But it doesn’t matter. She doesn’t matter. She’s a trophy-wife now, emphasis on trophy. She has to keep being shiny and new long enough to get back to the people she actually loved. Even if he’s definitely just going to kill them all as soon as she somehow gets away. It’d just be nice to see them again, before he steals her heart.
She probably ran out of niceties when he got her best friend, metamour, and hero all-in-one killed. Yet here she is, betraying Barry’s memory by letting his murderer make electricity dance through his throat into her lungs. He drags his tongue over the cut inside her bottom lip where she’d drawn blood trying to be quiet when he forced the stench of sex to sink into his lair’s floorboards. Maybe it’s a good thing she hasn’t eaten in days, since with her empty stomach, all she can do is gag and dryheave against him. He likes when he takes her breath away.
It's Ronnie, it’s Iris, she tells herself. Who’s she kidding? Why would they want her after she’s slept with the enemy? She’s disgusting now. It’s all over her... in her. She can’t wash it off. They deserve better than her. Yes, they loved her once, but that’s before she let a serial killer know her inside and out. It dirties them for her to even think about them here. She can’t stop herself, though, just like she can’t stop him.
She thinks, it's anyone else.
He laughs at, stares at, monologues at, and chews her up as if she’s his pet-girlfriend and no one else’s. He pretends like that.
So, lost in the memories of the men and women keeping her sanity alive, she pretends, too.
Barry’s work desk is cold on her palms. She digs into its sides to stop herself from shaking. Barry— her best friend, the man her girlfriend and queerplatonic partner were both in love with, her metamour-in-the-making— still has files everywhere. Had. Binders stacked on binders. His computer’s not facing her. It’s so dark anyway, she wouldn’t be able to make out her reflection on its screen. That’s good. That’s a mercy. She doesn’t ever want to know what she looks like right now. Hunter runs his hands down her sides from behind her, lazily pinching the fat in front of her ribs.
Stay still, her thoughts echo in her head, making her think of Killer Frost. Pretend it’s Cisco, Iris, Ronnie, Eddie, take your fucking pick.

1. What made you ship it?
It came on gradually during the first season, just these moments where they seemed to have a connection with each other. This is one of my favorites right from the first episode:
She's waiting for him to look at her, she's expecting him to look at her, and he does. And look at that smile when he turns back! Yeah, he's happy about Barry's progress but that smile was for Caitlin. He wasn't smiling like that before he turned and it doesn't drop when he turns away from her again. That's not a fake smile, that's a real one, and Eobard Thawne doesn't seem to give many of those out to people. 🥰
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
Their chemistry, oh man! Again, if it pleases the court, may I present the following Eobard Thawne Smiling At Caitlin Snow GIFs.... 😉 I especially love that last one because he KNOWS what she's trying to do; the smile isn't a happy one, it's not reaching his eyes, but, to me, it's an indulgent one. He's letting her think she's fooling him when he's already proven that he has no problem just removing an obstacle. He could be a mile away before she'd even hit the floor if he wanted to hurt her but, and yes, this is my shipper heart talking, I don't believe he ever wanted to. I think he genuinely cares for her.
Which makes his entire trying hard to hurt her feelings rant in 8x05 so weird to me... 😒 I still need to do a post about that scene, btw! *fistthump*
But I think it also explains how he looks rather stung when she tells him she hates him. He didn't expect that and I think it actually did hurt him to hear her say that. I don't believe he ever wanted anything less than her admiration, her respect and, dare I say, her love.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
I don't know that it's downright unpopular, per se, but probably not everybody is as sold on the idea of Matt Letscher's Eobard with Caitlin (especially their Flashpoint!versions) or Frost as I am.
