As the seasons change from fall to winter, thereâs a spectacular event that can occur in Yosemite National Park â but only if the seasonal stars align.
The annual pops of yellow, orange and red that sprinkle the valley floor and other parts of the park come from bigleaf maples, black oaks and Pacific dogwoods. When those vibrant colors get a blanket of snow, Yosemite sees âsnowliage,â the picturesque convergence of technicolor fall foliage with winterâs first big storm.
âLate fall is an incredibly beautiful time of year in Yosemite National Park,â said Yosemite spokesperson Scott Gediman. âRight now, weâre seeing the end of the fall colors with some brilliant gold leaves. The river is at its lowest, so itâs very peaceful and calm. Itâs a very special and quiet time. Just the last few days as we get into the late fall right before the winter comes, itâs a unique time of the year.â
So far, much of 2023âs fall color has faded without a coating of snow in the lower elevations of the park. There is a chance of heavy snow in late December, but a deep Sierra Nevada freeze may knock out the color by that point.
Photographer Justin Katz captures Yosemite's elusive "snowliage."Justin Katz Photography For Alameda photographer Richard Wong, Yosemite âsnowliageâ is when nature really comes alive. âToward the end of the season, youâll have more texture,â he told SFGATE in a phone interview. âYouâll see bare branches mixed in with colorful leaves and maybe some snow on top of it. If youâre doing a detailed sort of scene, itâs much better to have that.â Wong, who has been shooting landscapes and nature professionally for over two decades, counts the California coast, Joshua Tree and Yosemite as his regular haunts. âIn my opinion, itâs one of the more beautiful times to do nature photography, on the edges of the season,â he said. The same goes for Justin Katz. âItâs a pretty rare thing,â said Katz, a high-resolution landscape photographer whoâs been to Yosemite âa few thousand times.â His resume also includes work at Zion National Park, Oregonâs Columbia Gorge, Norway, Iceland and Big Sur. Heâs seen a lot and always comes back to Yosemite for inspiration. âThereâs a bunch of trees that are bare,â he said. âYou have the evergreens that are all over the place. The bare trees donât add much to the scene, so youâre kind of very selectively looking for that pop of color and whatâs going to add to the photo.â Calling it a âshoulder seasonâ event, Katz told SFGATE professional and amateur photographers have something in common when it comes to shooting âsnowliage.â âItâs a combination of being incredibly lucky, and [having] a willingness and preparedness to go at the drop of a hat if the conditions are right,â he said. âYou either get really lucky or you donât.â Sometimes itâs a question of getting to Yosemite Valley, which isnât easy when wintry weather is circling. Wong recommends staying in the valley itself so your âsnowliageâ canvas is just steps away. If thatâs not in the cards, Katz said a âgo bagâ full of the necessary equipment is a must. That, and keeping tabs on the weather forecast. âWatch the weather literally by the hour,â Wong said. âIf youâre seeing an incoming major storm over a 48-hour period, [be ready]. Check hour-by-hour and see when theyâre anticipating the snowstorm to hit. You want to time it so youâre there preferably right after the snowstorm hits.â The latter is probably one of the most important elements in landing the ideal shot. âMost people donât wake up early enough in the day [to see fresh snow],â Wong said. âUnless itâs snowing all day long, all that snow might have melted off by the time theyâve had breakfast.â To achieve that true, undisturbed âsnowliageâ look, the most dedicated photographers hunker down and âget comfortable being uncomfortableâ while waiting for the sun and clouds to combine for textbook Yosemite harmony. âWhen youâre there on the ground and youâre looking at a scene, itâs rare you get out of the car, take the shot and get back in the car,â Katz explained. âYouâre moving around a lot to see what works, and you shoot tens of thousands of shots to get the handful that work. Youâre taking so many that donât work and you just keep going and keep going.â But not all great âsnowliageâ images come from professional photographers. âMy iPhone 15 is incredible, too. So many people have access to incredible cameras,â Katz said, emphasizing meticulous planning to land that perfect shot. âIt would be one thing if I went to Yosemite once and captured this stuff. Youâve got to go a lot. You have to allocate time. You have to be lucky. You have to be patient.â

Well my leaf peepers, I hope you got your fill of the fall colors for 2016, I know, we can never have enough⌠Mother Nature out did herself on making the hunt, interesting⌠ If you are still finding fall colors be sure to post your finds on my New England fall foliage FB page.
Snow + Foliage = Snowliage
One of the concerns I always have is if Mother Nature gets a jump on winter and dumps snow on us early. In 2011 she brought an inch or so right before Halloween here in Salem and more than a foot in western Mass. But! What this can provide is the event we call Snowliage.
