I've been gifting big amounts of chestnuts to everyone who gave me any kind of present this year, and people really like being given large chestnuts, they've been pleased. I brought some to the plant lady and she asked me to take her foraging with me, to see where I found them. I felt very smug about finding such a great foraging spot all on my own, so I happily took her with me, and we were so lucky it was windy that day and chestnuts were raining down on us constantly. I got hit in the head. She said it was a „professional foraging spot“ and we found about 15kg together. She suggested we sell them.
I'm immediately confused, “we don't have a permit, and I can't be around people“ but she's smart so she goes „No, I'll just put an add in a facebook group and deliver them in person“, and well that, didn't even occur to me. She's been selling foraged stuff for a while, and she's a member of a group called „Eat Locally“ and it's not a group you can even join without being reccomended. So we made a deal, I'll collect chestnuts and she'll sell them.
She called me two days later asking if I was up to deliver them to a restaurant; I said yes, but was crazy nervous. It was far so I had to bike there, and in the end the exchange took 3 seconds, I handed the chestnuts and they gave me money instantly and I was out of there. First time delivery went well.
Next few days I kept foraging early in the morning before the crowd attacked, and kept getting text messages from her, like „4kg more sold! I need more merchandise!“ and that's been really cheerful. They keep selling easily, and I give credit to her for that; she's very well known in the society and people trust her.
I'm surprised at how pleasant it is to run a temporary chestnut business with a friend, I love waking up early just to go be inside the forest, in the most soothing green atmosphere with only little salamanders and birds for company; I enjoy getting there empty handed and going back with my bags full. Other foragers still annoy me but that can't be helped, at least I always get there first. It's very soothing for me to know I can make something by just walking thru the forest and collecting chestnuts, if only I could do something like that for every season. I found my first edible mushroom today as well!
I wish I could exchange chestnuts for something other than money; like wheat, or cooking oil. I hope one day to be able to make trades that make more sense to me. I sense me and plant lady will have to have a fight about money because she made up her mind to give it all to me, but she's doing half of the job, she found all the clients, weighed and split up the chestnuts, did all the negotiations, most of deliveries, and even keeps the chestnuts from drying up; I want her to take half of the earnings. It's much easier for us to split food because we both know how much we need, with money it's really tricky because there's no upper limit to how much you can use, I dislike that, all natural resources are expendable. Except maybe rocks. But how much rocks do you need. And where would you put them. Natural resources are either alive, expendable, or inconvenient to hoard and thats how it should be. Money is bad for our instincts to hoard resources.

Fall Convention Lineup

October 28: Doctoberfest, Indianapolis, IN
We’ll be vending and doing photo ops at this free Doctor Who-themed festival, as well as judging the costume contest. Come out and join the fun with games, shopping, vendors, and contests. Cosplay is encouraged!
Reminder: Costume contest and pumpkin carving contest entry deadline is Thursday, October 26. Forms are available at the store, or email [email protected].
November 3-5: Youmacon, Detroit, MI
We’re guests this year, and will be presenting a variety of cosplay programming. We’ll also be bringing along Cupcake the Dinosaur in her first Michigan appearance, as well! Stop by Cupcake’s booth for photo ops and limited-edition merchandise (yes, Cupcake has souvenirs now!).
Panels TBA, but we’ll post them once the final schedule is confirmed!
Cupcake will have a photo booth in the vendor hall and will be making appearances all weekend.

November 11: Zion UCC Fall Festival & Craft Fair, Indianapolis, IN
Not a convention, but more like a... low-key dealer room? If you’re in the Indy area, we’ll be vending (in our civilian personas) at this event. Laura will be signing her books (including some brand new publications!). Alena will be selling art, jewelry and crafts (including some geek-inspired items) with @zjtimekeeper. Come hang out with us and get a jump start on your holiday shopping.
December 5: It’s A Wonderful Life Radio Play at the Historic Arcraft Theatre, Franklin, IN
Reprising her role from two years ago, Alena will again be playing Mary Bailey in this 1940s radio-style stage play, live at the Artcraft. There are no retakes in radio...!
December 8: White Christmas at the Historic Artcraft Theatre, Franklin, IN
Who are we kidding? We’re at the Artcraft almost every week, so it’s hardly a special event... unless you want to see us introduce the film in replica costumes, in which case White Christmas is the PERFECT time to attend. (And you could win fabulous prizes!)
