This chapter is not my friend, it’s necessary filler with conversations and planning before we get to the good stuff but I hateee it right now. Anyway, here’s one of the last paragraphs I wrote:

Betty kicks her legs out, and notices that the man besides her, the man she feels like she knows, but who remains nameless, does the same. 

The lake is so smooth that it reflects the image of their kicking legs back to them perfectly. If the nameless man’s presence hadn’t already made it painfully clear that this was a dream, their perfect reflection - unclouded by the sky, un-rippled by the breeze - would have.

Betty sees him every night now, but when she opens her mouth to speak, nothing comes out. He does the same in response, staring at her with his blue eyes, as if they could communicate just through that.

I like women who have goals, who have their own jobs that they want to continue even after they get married. How is it fair that they become stay-at-home wives? Can’t I have that option? A stay-at-home husband sounds appealing. I’d dig that lifestyle. That, and well, my little income can’t support two people. I don’t want my future wife relying solely on me. 

Like, what if I get fired? 

My boss threatens to fire me on a daily basis since he thinks my writing is too straightforward. He wants me to tone it down because he describes my pieces as insensitive, blatant and too honest that the readers might take offence to it. 

I always fight back, arguing that I’d rather tell the audience how it is, rather than lie and gloss over something that is far from the truth. I’m just lucky that because of my infamous candour,  I’ve steadily gained a fanbase that appreciates my writing. That’s the only reason that is stopping mister boss person from sacking me. I’m an asset (he likes to correct me and call me an ‘ass’) to our tiny newspaper company. I assist making ends meet, and he knows this.

Hanzo snorts, lifting his head. “Since when?”

“Since I was little. Would see bald eagles and vultures all the time. The vultures were the worst, though. When there was roadkill, there’d be at least three of ‘em fighting over the carcass. Sometimes when I’d be playin’ outside, they’d follow me, like they were waitin’ for me to keel over so they could peck at my remains.” Jesse shudders. “Fuckin’ birds.”

“That is the funniest thing I have ever heard,” Hanzo says, actually laughing.
