â from No Good Choices
âShari, why does Dad leave us every Solstice?â
A starlit night. Trickling water flowed not far from Charimoneâs feet, the grass lush with dewdrops.
Her sister wove her crimson hair into intricate braids. âThatâs like asking why the stars shine, they just do.â
Charimone frowned. âHave you tried asking him? He ignores me when I ask.â
She could feel a stall in her older sisterâs fingers, a slight tug before continuing. âThere was once this girl named Ellaifra, as beautiful as she was fair. Any time she found an injured bird, sheâd take it in and keep it in a sanctuary. Many people adored her for her heart, and her kindness.
âBut one day,â She wrapped a string of pastel blue ribbon around the braidâs end, starting another. âA man arrived to the house to claim a debt she owed. He gave her a choice, lose the house to him or take his hand and get rid of the birds.â
âWhy couldnât she stay with her family?â Charimone asked, admiring the first of the braids.
âIn life we all have choices to make, deals to fulfill. Sometimes there are no good choices.â
âDad should pick better then.â
Sharigan laughed at that, Charimone too.
Some say the stars sparkled brighter that night.

â from Between Sisters, An Eulogy Bloodied
In this silence her shivering continued. Her breaths laboured, quick, louder with each exhale. A pain her close friend shared in witness.
[Petrius] yearned to hold her in her unconsciousness, thread a sturdy hand through her crimson hair and assure her the pain would cease. The light would arrive again, sheâd open her eyes, and meet this future anew. They both would.
But in this bed rested not the girl he knew. His hands were not enough, her hands could hold him, now in a way one could grasp a pawn. The sight succumbed him yet he refused to look away.
His lady took on a shocking stature, matching the lady who lead the swans.
When she opened her eyes, what would he say? What could he? The words escaped his tongue, coalescing into a sinking pit within him, akin to the gap between him and his beloved friend.
âWhat do we tell them?â Asked a friend, a fellow witness to this songâs stagnation. Sinking into the air with the tang of a past they all aspired to bury.
He gave him an incisive look, his sharp features splashed with blood and grief. âTell them we found the swans. Itâs done.â
So marked the morning Claudia Emar reposed in sacrifice.
(The context is that she saved her town from being plagued by swans [and avenged her sister] but she can't come home đ)
