A/N: So! Itâs back! Elite Snipers have snuck up on me. Itâs a bit shorter than usual, but Iâm trying my hardest to plan the chapters ahead so itâs easier to fall into. I had @deascheck read through it, just to make sure it was up to standard. Grammar-wise, mistakes are all mine! I hope you guys will like it and let me know what ya think!
The annoying sound of your alarm went off in your ears. You wished nothing more than to hit snooze, but you had to be back training with the biggest jerk on the entire earth at 5 am. You returned to your quarters around midnight, and it was now 4 am.Â
âUrgh, just kill me now,â You said as you sat up in your bed and rubbed your eyes from sleep. The sleep deprivation was evident in you, with slow movements and dark circles under your eyes. âThis is going to be a long ass day,â You had training with Castiel at 5, then your recruits at 7 am, which was at times, nice considering that you at least had some of your self-control back when you were with them. A tiny lunch break before you had a workout session to see to, which was followed by yet another training session with him.Â
You hurried to eat your breakfast and pack all the gear you would need for later. You were supposed to meet with Castiel in 10 minutes, but you were sure as hell not going to be late. You left for the shooting range, knowing you would be there 5 minutes before you needed to be. The building was huge with plenty of room to create long shots for snipers to train their aim on the long ranges. You walked into the building and were instantly met with a remark.Â
âYou know, being early doesnât give you extra credit,â He was fiddling with a rifle he was putting back together. Your blood was already starting to boil, and you felt a heat forming in you, like a burst of energy that was pleading to be let go. Except you had learned better by now, making sassy comments only felt good for a few seconds before he would make your life miserable.Â
âIâm aware, sir. But I rather be early than late. You have made that perfectly clear, thank you,â you answered as civilly as you could muster. You threw your bag on the ground beside the table he was working at. âSo what are we doing today, this bright and fine morning, sir?â you asked with a hint of mockery and a small smile on your lips.Â
âMockery wonât get you far either, Rookie,â He answered coldly, while you didnât even earn a look from him, he just stared at the rifle before him. âDoes this man even know emotions?â âIâll let that one slip, but remember what consequences it can have,â You took in a deep breath and held it for a while before letting it go as a sigh. âBut to answer your question, we are not doing anything, you are, and youâre doing a workout,â he finally looked up at you with a smirk on his lips. You had never seen anything that could resemble a smile, you had barely ever seen his teeth except for when you had pissed him off yet again. âYouâre going to run laps around the building, push-ups, sit-ups, plank, pretty much everything you put your recruits through,â he explained as he pulled on the rifle and put it down on the table before standing. âJust expect it to be harder,â He continued. âI hope youâre ready because weâre starting in 15 seconds. Chop chop,â He clapped his hands, and you were about to tear him a new one for his words and actions. You shook it off and decided to use the energy in the workout instead.
â
He wasnât kidding when he said it would be harder. He was pushing you to limits you didnât even know you had. Your watch was starting to make alarms due to the continuous high heart rate. You used every second you got to relax in between each set. Your arms were lying flat on the ground as you were heaving for your breath. You looked at the clock and realised you had to go back to your recruits in 15 minutes. âAlmost two hours of this⌠holy crapâ.
âI need to get back to my recruits,â you said as you got up from the ground. As soon as you did, sweat droplets started to drip down from your forehead and into your eyes.Â
âOh right, let the Rookie train the rookies. What a magnificent idea!â Castiel answered with his own mockery.Â
âLook, Iâm good at what I do, and I sure as hell donât need a dick like you to tell me otherwise!â You spat back at him as you grabbed your gear and got ready to leave him behind. Youâd had enough of this; him attacking your abilities to do your job was the last drop.
âExcuse me?! What did you just call me?!â His teeth were gritted, his hands balled into fists, and his eyes looked like there was a lightning storm happening. You let out a breathy laugh and looked down, and when you were about to answer, he spat back at you. âLast time I checked, youâre still under my training until you leave this place,â Your smile didnât falter as you answered him.Â
âOh, right!â You looked up into the sky and pointed a finger at him. âLet me change that sentence for you, Your Highness. I sure as hell donât need a dick like you to tell me otherwise, sir,â You continued, your eyes filled with defiance, and then you simply turned your back on him. You walked away before he could have a comeback at you.Â
âDamn, this will bite me in my ass next time he sees meâ. You hurried your way over to your recruits to get on with the day.Â
Castielâs POV
Castiel was fuming from the moment she left. The last remark she had left him with caused a need to throw something. He shortly looked at the rifle on the table, and at the last minute decided that wasnât going to bring him any satisfaction. âWho is she calling a dick?!â. He wasnât about to take this defiance and reluctance from her. He was ending this, no matter what he had to do, he wouldnât take it anymore. Matt could say whatever he wanted, but he was not continuing this mentorship anymore.Â
He was hastily walking with long strides towards the Majorâs office. On his way, he passed the training grounds, and the sight made him pause for a second. No matter how angry he had made her, she didnât show it to her recruits. She was strict and just the right amount of tough towards them and in their training.Â
âAllen, you can do better than that! Get your ass down from the air, this isnât the airforce!â She yelled from in front of the troop, which earned her a laugh from the men and women in front of her. The recruit at the end of her demand adjusted and stood perfectly. Her eyes landed shortly on Castiel and immediately started pacing, and he was reminded of what he was doing.Â
He knocked hard on the door to the Majorâs office, and he didnât wait for an answer before entering. Two heads turned in his direction, and the Major put on a nice smile to the person in front of him.Â
âIâm sorry, Baker, it would seem Novak needs my attention,â Matt handed back the papers to Baker and excused him, before turning to Cas. âWell, come on inside, Castiel,â Matt continued, gesturing with his hand to sit in front of him.Â
âOh, I wonât need to sit down for this,â Castiel gave a strict answer, his blood was starting to boil in his veins again, and his hands, once again, balled into fists. âIâll get straight to the point. Iâm not mentoring your little project anymore, Matt. I wonât stand it any longer. That defiant little brat of yours, yeah, sheâs not much for listening,â he continued as his hands landed on the chair he stood behind, his knuckles turning white from gripping it so tightly.Â
âCas, I can see your frustration, but neither do you seem to be,â Castiel looked puzzled at the major. âAs I very vividly told you, I wasnât asking, itâs an order and thatâs the end of it,â Matt politely answered with his hands folded on the table. Cas was about to open his mouth, but Matt beat him to it. âNah-ah, I wonât hear it. Besides, I never said it was going to be easy. Thereâs a reason sheâs here and not with her platoon in Afghanistan,â He leaned back in his chair, hands still folded while playing with his thumbs.Â
Castiel was taken aback by the words that left his friendâs mouth. The words slowly landed in his mind.Â
âWait, she was deployed before she came here last week?â He questioned and squinted his eyes. âWhy was she sent home?â He continued his questions as he let go of the chair and stood tall.Â
âWhy do I feel like Iâm being cross-examined here?â Matt laughed a little at his friendâs behavior. âBesides, you know I canât discuss these things with you. You donât need that information to continue your mentorship with her, which you will Novak.â He finished with an implied order.Â
âFine! But I wonât, in any way, be easy on her, so if she comes crying to you about it, you already know what to answer her!â Castiel answered with a promise as he turned towards the door.Â
âI never asked you to be Novak,â the Major smiled at him, accepting the underlying terms.Â
âShe is going to have a tough time later,â he thought to himself as Castiel left the office.Â
Readerâs POV
You took a big bite out of the sandwich you were having for lunch, while you debated with yourself whether you should drop the workout you had planned for yourself. Castiel had been hard on you earlier, and honestly, you werenât sure you had any more energy in the bank for it.Â
Your phone vibrated in your pocket, and even that you contemplated whether you wanted to answer or not.Â
âScrew itâ you thought as you threw the sandwich on the plate and licked the dressing off of your fingers. You dug your phone out of your pocket and looked at the caller ID. A smile crept onto your lips. âWell, if this isnât something to brighten up the day, I donât know what isâ.
âCaleb! Hi!â You smiled at the camera on your phone, only to realise it wasnât only your best friend. âOh my god, guys! Youâre all here!â Your smile grew even bigger as you looked at all the faces that were looking back at you.Â
âHi there, Sarge!â Everyone said in choir as they gave you a salute.Â
âYou guys have no idea how much I needed this,â you answered them, and you somehow felt a rush of relief wash over you, as some of the stress left your body. You felt like you could finally breathe.Â
âYou almost look more worn down than we do, Sarge,â Rodriguez butted in and it earned a laugh from you.Â
âOh, you donât know the half of it, Rodriguez. The past week has been crazy. Iâm training recruits, Iâm training sniper skills 24/7, and honestly, the âmentorâ isnât so nice. I have a terrible sleep schedule, because of him, so yeah, what fun it is to be back in the States,â You began rambling. It earned you a few apologetic looks from your platoon.Â
âYeah, McCoy did mention something about sniper school,â Andrews answered to your complaint about the situation.
âOh no no, not sniper school, I have earned the rights to a real-life legend in being a dick to teach me. Iâm not saying he isnât a brilliant sniper, heâs just horrible at anything else,â You shook your head at all the things Castiel had put you through the past week.Â
âWell, weâre all...â Andrews started, but his words were cut short by that deep, recognisable voice.Â
âRookie, put your phone away, eat your lunch, and meet me at the shooting range in 15,â Your eyes darted up to meet his crystal blue ones. He stood tall right in front of you. His stare made your throat dry, and you had to swallow hard. A part of you knew it wasnât only the voice and the glare that made you swallow hard. You wished you didnât find him kind of intriguing and well, handsome.Â
âYes, sir,â You answered dryly. He nodded and turned on his heels as he stalked away from you. Your eyes looked at him till he turned a corner and escaped your eyesight.Â
âHey Y/L/N, are you still with us?â Calebâs voice rang through to you.Â
âHuh? What?â You questioned as you stared a little confused back at your platoon. A few laughs escaped from your platoon.Â
âHe - uh - seems like a bunch of fun, has he got something on you?â Henderson bid in only making you more confused about the whole situation. âYouâre allowing him to call you a rookie, and get you to call him sir? That doesnât seem like you, whereâs our badass sergeant that doesnât take shit from anyone?â He continued when your confused expression didnât change.Â
âOh that, no he - uh - heâs really just a dick, and I donât, so shut up!â You replied with a little hand gesture in front of you and a shake of your head. âWell, guess I gotta go. It was nice to see you all again,â You smiled before waving goodbye to your friends and quickly finished your lunch. You wouldnât want to be late, especially not after what you did earlier.Â
As you walked into the building, you were met by Castiel leaning on the wall, one foot pressed firmly onto the wall. The M21 Rifle was lying in the same spot as it had done the first lesson you had with Castiel. âOh good, weâre shooting this timeâ. You tried to seem enthusiastic in your head, but you knew at some point a hammer would fall.Â
âHello, Rookie,â Castiel started without looking up from the spot on the floor. You put down your jacket on the table, causing Castiel to look up at you. You shifted a little on your feet under his gaze. You, for once, let yourself look properly into those eyes. They were mesmerising. âCat caught your tongue?â He continued when he didnât get a reaction from you.Â
âNo, sir,â You answered as you forced yourself to stand a little taller.Â
âRookie, I didnât appreciate what you did this morning, and youâre not going to be let off easy. Weâre practicing long shots,â He pushed off the wall as his hand gestured to the other side of the room. He started walking towards the end of the range, and as you followed him, you looked back on the M21 rifle you had hoped to be lying by. âThis here is an M24 rifle, my M24 rifle to be exact,â He continued, and you were wondering why you moved away from the other rifle when he didnât think you could shoot properly. âAnd if you thought you were so lucky to be firing it, youâd be very, hmm⌠wrong. Youâre a spotter today!â He finished as he looked at you. It seemed like he enjoyed the perplexed expression on your face because one side of his lips curved a little bit. âYouâre going to be my spotter, and I have a, how to put it, certain way I want things.â His expression turned into one of smugness and seemingly a little bit of pride. âI knew it would bite me in my assâ. You felt your anger starting to bubble beneath the confused look. âI put this on myself. â You took a deep breath before answering him.Â
âYes, sir. When do we begin?â You replied as controlled as you could. You sure as hell werenât going to let him have the satisfaction of knowing how much it annoyed you.Â
