[ Pharaohs and their Favorite Gods - Sneferu ]
Sneferu, founder of Egyptโs Fourth Dynasty, is remembered not only as the first great pyramid builder but also as the pharaoh who began shaping a new kind of divine kingship: one illuminated by the rising solar cult.
While no inscription explicitly declares him as โthe son of Ra,โ archaeological and artistic remains suggest that Sneferu brought the solar cult into the heart of the royal court. From his time onward, Egyptian kings began to associate themselves with the Sun God.
Sneferuโs piety also extended to Hathor, the goddess of love, beauty, and joy, who was venerated as โLady of Turquoise.โ In Egyptian belief, turquoise was a sacred and precious stone, rivaling gold in value. As a builder, Sneferu is thought to have offered devotion to Hathor, seeking her blessing for prosperity, artistic beauty, and success in the mining expeditions that supplied Egypt with this treasured mineral, especially from the Sinai.
Sneferuโs descendants carried forward his religious vision: his grandson Khafre was the first king to officially bear the title โSon of Raโ (Sa Ra). And later, Menkaure, another descendant, showed particular devotion to Hathor โ his statues famously depict him standing beside the goddess, with whom he seems to be particularly fascinated.
