Also Whatās Mr. Smeeās favourite drink?
Irish whiskey. Listen, I know we see Mr. Smee drunk at one point in the film but I have a headcanon that it actually takes A LOT to get him there. Like, back in the days of his youth he was that guy who could walk into a pub and drink anyone else under the table and still not be tipsy. As for what we see in filmā¦letās just sayā¦Hook is the reason he drinks, lol. He cares a lot about the captain but letās just say itās not easy being Hookās conscience all the time. And ya know, trying to keep him alive when the crocodile is constantly causing problems. But somebodyās gotta do it.
This (very difficult to see) photo is of George Llewelyn Davies and a dog named Smee. It comes from George's section in Yale's collection of Davies family photos [here], image 11.
Whatās your thoughts on the late Hans Conried and the late Bill Thompsonās portrayals of Captain James Hook and Mr. Smee?
Love, love, LOVE them! They ARE Disneyās Hook and Smee, and I canāt imagine anyone else filling the roles. While Corey Burton & Jeff Bennett are great, they obviously have based their interpretations of the characters on Conried & Thompsonās original work. The characters wouldnāt be who they are without those two. Even their body language and facial expressions are based off of Conried and Thompsonās live-action reference model recordings. (You can see just how many traits Hans and Hook share in common here.) I really wish we still had access to those original recordings and not just the stills but even they are pretty awesome.
I donāt know how Hans and Bill felt about working with one another, but I suspect by the time they finished recording, they were good friends because only those who get along so well in real life can play off of one another on screen the way Hook and Smee do and make it sound believable. They later worked together again for Disney in the early production of Sleeping Beauty and you can still hear them as Kings Stefan (before Hans was replaced as the voice actor) and Hubert in this unused song and once again, it sounds like theyāre having a blast. I donāt know why they ultimately recast Stefan but you donāt cast two actors as a dynamic duo like that twice (even if it was just in the early days) unless their chemistry is good.
Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, who animated Hook and Smee respectively, were also good friends in real life. Thereās a great documentary about their many contributions to Disney history called Frank and Ollie and you can absolutely tell how much they cared about each other not just as coworkers but as best friends. They occasionally joke around and poke fun at each other and I think some of that warmth definitely made it into the film as well.
Itās interesting to me that Hook and Smee have a different dynamic than most villains and henchmen. While most villains could honestly get along fine without their henchmen and the henchmen are only begrudgingly doing their job because theyāre afraid of the consequences, Hook canāt function without Smee. He NEEDS him, whether or not he admits it. And Smee, although intimidated by Hook, also seems to genuinely care about him when no one else does. Itās one of the many things I love about these characters.
When Corey Burton & Jeff Bennett were interviewed about how they handled Hook & Smee in Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Corey reported that they decided to play the characters as a sort of vaudeville comedy team. While he didnāt expressly mention it, I suspect he may also have drawn inspiration for Jakeās version of Hook from Conriedās work in the animated show Hoppity Hooper, in which he plays the role of Waldo Wigglesworth, a scheming snake oil salesman who always has a new plan up his sleeve that he seems to think is flawless but which inevitably ends up backfiring. Waldo even has a Smee-like companion, Fillmore, and the titular character, Hoppity Hooper, is somewhat reminiscent of Jake at timesāa kid who is a bit too trusting of āUncle Waldoā but often ultimately bringing out the best in him. If you havenāt ever seen the show, check it out and youāll see what I mean. Meanwhile, Jeff Bennett has said of his Smee, ā[He] has that bumbling way about him. He's always trying to keep up and wants to try to make everybody happyālike the Mom who wants everybody to stop fighting and be friends and make nice and for the world to be every color of the rainbow. But every once in a while, you'll hearāand I try not to do it too oftenāthat little edge of āBoy, this job is really hard and I am a little tired of it.āā I think they both do an excellent job of keeping the heart of the characters Conried & Thompson brought to life, and the original voice actors would be proud.
Class of Heroes: Ray Hook & His Crew
Ray, Nelson & Loic: Captain Hook, Smee & Sharky/Bones
Ray likes to claim he's the captain, but he's still serving under his father. Being a part of the Hook family has given Ray an extreme case of ego. He feels entitled to being the one to order his fellow crew members around and taking down Simon, the magical boy who'd been a pain in his family side since the two of them were little.
He treats Nelson like crap but isn't as slaphardy with Loic, because the guy can easily kick his ass. He just sticks to verbal jabs for him. Heās also incredibly arrogant and overconfident in his skills, often picking fights with people he canāt really beat on his own. Incredibly ungrateful for anyone who helps him out, always willing to stab people in the back.
Loathes the Neverland boy with a passion. Often talks down to him and will rant and rave about him for hours. While Nelson is enthralled by the story, Loic is damn sick of it. Thankfully, if he tries to get too rough with Simon, Denise is more than willing to send him flying.
Nelson is Ray's "first mate". He's the sorta henchman who's just doing this because he's desperate for friends. Heroes have found when he's not around the crew, he's actually quite nice to them.
He does really want to be bad, but doesn't exactly know how. It also doesn't help that none of the Lost Children are intimidated by him. He's trying his best to fix the stutter he was born with.
Loic is the hot blooded bruiser of the crew, always willing to get into scraps and cause trouble for the hell of it.
He's also a surprisingly talented musician, easily whooping Lila's butt in song competitions. Luka on the other hand, is a literal prodigy, so he's never won against him.
Blast that Simon Pan! Once again, Weeby was a huge help with this so give her a thanks. Make sure to reblog and reply with your thoughts and check out our Hero AU! @booksrbetterthanpeople @msweebyness @nerdy-chocomallow

To william, smee.
James: Hey William, just a headsup. There is this kid coming to work for us, so uh look out for him cause Tina is in charge, and my wife is well... tina. And i mean that with all the love i hold for her in my heart so pls keep an eye on them.
Finally decided to draw the three phases id like to have with the fairy smee au. So here this is.
Phase 1: is the fairy phase. This is when he is still living in pixy hollow.
Phase 2: is him leaving pixy hollow after a severe injury. This injury causes him to be ostracized from the hollow.
Phase 3: this will be the Phase just before he meets hook (who would still be a lost boy with peter up till this point). Id like for the jolly Roger to be something he just built as a way to try and leave neverland. He would meet hook after a big fight peter and hook had. Hook would find him on the beach and at this point hook would be around 15 and smee would be apperance wise 34 and reluctantly growing attached to hook. He would veiw hook as a son.
As far as how hook becomes captain of the jolly Roger is sorta like a dread pirate Roberts situation where smee was captain and then he trains hook to take over and stays on as a second in command playing up the bumbling fool act but is actually very dangerous and hostile towards peter and Tinkerbell.
