The third eldest of the koopalings. Kooky considers himself an artist; not only a master mechanic and chemist, but his background in painting and drawing comes in handy when visualizing his bizarre ideas as well. He's got a certain style to his work that's uniquely 'him', keen on making his creations as visually awe-inspiring as they are deadly.
His ability to make use of wherever's on hand makes him, invaluably, the most resourceful of the koopalings. Kooky is constantly trying to outdo himself, throwing himself from one project to the next with reckless abandon whilst entirely neglectful of his wellbeing amidst his chaotic pursuits; much to his father's chagrin. He's the definition of not knowing when to quit, determined to succeed at any cost.
Despite his obvious lunacy, Kooky speaks with such passion and enthusiasm that he easily convinces his siblings his schemes are so crazy they just might work. Heās very secretive about his works in progress, not one to reveal anything until theyāve come to fruition.
He's not known for his temper, but if he feels he's been personally outsmarted or his intelligence has been put into question, he can fly off the handle. He'll bounce back from the failure of a collaborative family scheme with humor and an unshakable determination to try again. The failure of his own curated plots, however, leave him enraged and devastated to the point of sickness.
He's the wildcard of the koopalings, his unpredictable and volatile nature making him Mario and Co.'s most dreaded foe next to King Koopa himself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Other tidbits I either cut from his description or just wrote down for reference:
ā¢He resents any titles or nicknames spread around by the mushroom kingdom that elude to his "supposed" madness, finding them to indicate he doesn't know what he's doing. "Kooky" only means eccentric and unordinary, of course.
ā¢He has a vague prejudice against relying on magic, believing there's nothing magic can do better than he alone can figure out.
ā¢He supports King Koopa's plan of conquering the lands and ruling them as a clan, though he can't help but fantasize about creating a doomsday device capable of wiping out the entire world. He wouldn't do it, though. Nah.
ā¢He's the only one out of the koopalings who won't go out of his way to antagonize or instigate fights with the others. He's not very emotionally intelligent, but his siblings can be sure he'll never try to belittle or undermine them. He WILL stand his ground when challenged, however, and is definitely no pushover.
ā¢Though he gloats about his intelligence, he's anything but a stick in the mud. He's playful and isn't afraid to make a fool of himself if a plan calls for it (as long as it's later revealed that he is, in fact, NOT a fool lol).
Is there anything about your takes on the Mario Bros and co? I'm a little curious about your take on them!
Definitely! Theyāll get character profiles like the Koopalings eventually, but hereās a few bits on them!
[ā¬ļø Filler doodle. Koopalings are nasty lil critters :ā)]
Mario and Co. consists of Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princess Toadstool, and Yoshi. Those are our main characters/heros.
Mario and Luigi are an orphan duo who struggled their way through life together before falling into the mushroom kingdom. They have a found family situation with the mushroom world and considers it their home, but they do have fond nostalgia for Brooklyn. Despite being dubbed heros, theyāve never lost sight of their honest, humble, hardworking roots. Theyāre the mushroom kingdomās resident handymen and part time monster fighters.
-Mario is a ārough around the edges and been around the block, but undoubtedly has a heart of goldā type of guy. Heās not the type to be super emotional, but itās never a question if he truly cares or not. Heās carried the mentality that no one owes him anything his entire life and still lives by that, to a fault. Appreciates a good cigar every once in a while, and gives the best life advice when heās smoking one. After using the power star to defeat King Koopa, Mario suffers permanent nerve damage up his right arm. He has jolts of pain every once in a while and is definitely weaker on his right side, the koopalings taking advantage of it during close encounters.
-Luigi doesnāt have a mean bone in his body. Heās very sensitive and feels empathy deeply. Heās more often than not terrified during the escapades he finds himself on, but he gets things done scared- the definition of bravery. He recovers physically and mentally with admirable speed. He loves to garden with Yoshi and does most of the cooking in the house. He doesnāt trust anyone but Mario in his kitchen >:0
-Princess Toadstool grew up very snobbish and entitled because of her crown, but her self centered world view was very suddenly shattered at her coronation. Interrupted by King Koopa (which was also his debut to the world outside of Darkland), the encounter instantly humbled her to the reality that there are things far bigger (figuratively and literally) than her in this world. Committed to her people, who fiercely protected her and each other, she quickly matured into the compassionate, dedicated, and down to earth leader she is today; even more so after two common working men from another world save her kingdom from King Koopa waging war on their land.
-Toad is like Mario, but insanely hot-headed. He's the princess's right hand man, the bold, street smart mushroom who saved her life during her coronation. He throws himself into conflict and isn't afraid to taunt the koopalings, often extending an otherwise finished confrontation and landing himself in more trouble than he can handle alone. He isn't an easy opponent though, making the koopas work for every scratch. He's a tough cookie and won't take lip from anyone, no matter who they are.
-Yoshiās origins are very similar to the beginning of āMama Luigiā, though he was found and adopted after King Koopa and his army was sent to the banishment zone. He's a loyal steed whenever Mario and friends need to get in or out of somewhere quick, and a pain in the butt when preparing dinner. Is absolutely Luigiās baby and both are proud of it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mario and Co.'s views towards the main conflict of the story differ significantly pre-banishing Koopa and post-banishing Koopa. Originally, King Koopa was the complete epitome of a mindless, blood thirsty tyrant with no other desire than to destroy and conquer. But now, free from his creator's hold and accompanied by his 7 children, King Koopa's entire ideology of his life is shattered; and so is our hero's. Now proven to be a feeling creature with a soul, as well as a new goal centered entirely around his love for his children, the Marios face a great moral and ethical dilemma concerning King Koopa and his family.
Their views on the Koopalings themselves are also very complicated, each hero having their own complex feelings (going into how they feel about each individual koopaling could be an entire post of it's own brooooo there's so much). Generally, no one likes the idea of having to hurt a pack of confused and traumatized children raised by their even more confused and traumatized father. But on the other hand, they know if they don't come up with a permanent solution to their havoc, the koopalings will only get bigger and meaner, and eventually the mushroom kingdom will have to face eight giant tyrants instead of one. For now, Mario and Luigi handle them as the threats they are, but do everything they can to convey compassion and the desire to help. The koopalings just swear to make them pay for every shred of mercy they show.
The ideal end goal for Mario and friends would be for King Koopa to yield and accept a life of peace with his family in a more ideal place like waterland, leaving behind his tyrannical rule and embracing the domestic life he truly wants. But his faith in anyone instructing above him has been entirely ground to dust and blown away, refusing to let go of the control he has and determined to shape the entire world to be, what be believes, is the ideal place for his kids to live and reign over. The Marios' biggest hope of reasoning with the royal koopas is Hip and Hop: the only members of the family who haven't had their perspectives on life and sense of reality be warped by the traumatizing ordeals their siblings and father have endured. But while our heroes desperately try to form a connection with them on the rare occasions they cross paths, Hip and Hop are constantly surrounded by a dark norm at home, and they're learning from it very quickly. Their duty to protecting the mushroom kingdom and their moral desire to help a pack of misguided creatures clash terribly for everyone involved.
The fifth eldest of the koopalings. Despite being one of the youngest in the bunch, Big Mouth holds his own against his siblings just fine. He's a tough, sturdy force that doesn't mind taking a punch as much as he doesn't mind throwing one; and his threats and taunts aren't empty, either. He'll do just about anything to get a rise out of people and greatly enjoys getting into physical/verbal altercations.
He's horribly crass and lacks any kind of tact; not that he was aiming for any to begin with. He'll occasionally say something deeply profound and noteworthy to the others, but it's often by accident and goes over his head. He loves to use complex and sophisticated verbage in his obnoxious ramblings, almost always incorrectly. He's by far the most creative with his insults, often so outlandish they temporarily break the focus and crack up his siblings. Intentionally irritating as he is, he never wants to cause genuine emotional distress to his siblings but doesn't always know where the established line is and when it's been crossed, leaving him to awkwardly back off and wait for his father to smooth things over. Big Mouth's impossible to miss, and you're sure to hear him before you see him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Other tidbits:
ā¢Ignoring his taunts and refusing to engage with him is the fastest way to get knocked out.
More sorta kinda recent koopa backlog~ Some notes I whipped up after deciding what direction I wanted to take with Kootie Pie. Sheās probably the koopaling I went through the most changes with in design and personality over the years šš„
Text in the image:
The fourth eldest of the koopalings, and King Koopa's only daughter. Kootie Pie is totally in tune with her royal status and insists on living her ideal, pampered life. She expects complete compliance from everyone, her entitlement going far beyond just her father's kingdom. She likes to keep a prim and proper appearance but isn't afraid to get ugly when her bratty demands aren't met. It doesn't help that Koopa all but endorses her behavior and is keen to cater to her cries - as if trying to make up for his children's earliest years being spent in the banishment zone with him.
Despite her appearance and snobbish behavior she's just as brutish and out for blood as the rest of her siblings. Her schemes are never next level and hardly clever, but she's horribly persistent in trying again and again if she wants something bad enough. If she DOES succeed in her heists, good luck getting the stolen property back. Once she's got something in her grasp, she'll fight tooth and claw to keep it.
ur art is so peak I love how u draw the koopalings š¤§š¤ What are some of your hcs for them plz plz plz
First off WOWEE thank you!! :))) Iām assuming you mean for their cartoon counterparts since thatās all I post, which Iām always game to yap about yessirrrr
Not sure whether you want a full on lore dump or fun facts, so Iāll just drop a few general cannon divergencies in my silly reimagining. Can dive deeper into a specific koopaling, but there are some plot points I wanna save to reveal through art and animatic š
(King Koopa grayscale doodle for visual interest lol)
-From oldest to youngest: Bully, Cheatsy, Kooky, Kootie, Big Mouth, Hip N Hop
-Cheatsy is King Koopaās second in command, which creates a heated rivalry between him and Bully (more like Bully pathetically tries push Cheatsy around and the latter easily evades him). Koopa isnāt playing favorites, Cheatsy just has a multitude of skills better suited for his needs than Bully does. Bullyās a tank, but unfortunately a massive coward as well :ā)
-Although the koopalings do go off on their own to cause trouble for Mario and Co., theyāre rarely ever sent off by Koopa to carry out certain tasks like in cannon. Koopa encourages them (aside from Hip N Hop, theyāre too young according to him. They do still occasionally sneak out, however) to cause mischief in the mushroom kingdom and instill the fear of them in its inhabitants, but he plans to seize the kingdom himself. Throughout the series he continuously plots their demise in the background, the grizzly end goal being to conquer the mushroom kingdom and feed its heros to his koopalings. (Take any violence and threats at 80s cartoonish value!) Everything he does is for his kids once they come into the picture.
-Like their father, the koopalings were created via magic rather than being a naturally occurring species. Though instead of being purely magic like Koopa, his blood was used in their conception. They were all created and hatched in the banishment zone. They all inherited and highlight one of Koopaās key attributes.
-Koopa, who was created to be and widely seen as the embodiment of pure evil, and his relationship with the koopalings is the cause of a great moral dilemma amongst Mario and Co. and a high point of conflict from episode to episode.
OUGHHHHHH man I appreciate that so so sooooo much thank you!! ą¼¼ā ;ā Ā“ā ą¼ąŗ¶ā Ā ā ŪĀ ā ą¼ąŗ¶ā ą¼½
It's so super cool and exciting that people are interested in the story, but I reeeeeeally don't want to give out any major stuff yet. I want to reveal it all through art, but here's some tidbits that don't give away major plot points/are just random little fun facts I've written. (I've made a tag for posts specifically about lore -> '#smb lore' if you want to scroll through that stuff specifically) <3
Side note about the series in general: I like to stick my little 'The New Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3' sticker on the bottom of some pieces for silly nostalgic effect, but my actual working title lacks the '3' at the end, as it includes some aspects of SMW as well like Yoshi and Koopa Wizards and SMW enemies. I've kinda mashed those last two Mario cartoons together (dw there's no scary cave people <3). The main series is typical cartoon shenanigans you'd see in maybe a more grizzly dark fantasy cartoon from the 80s (as in I'm not shy about having characters say they wanna kill each other or showing a little blood here n there). The pre story with the banishment zone and the Koopalings' origin stories is much darker, however, and the details are only ever alluded to in the main story (dw you'll get to see the full extent of it eventually).
I've slightly reworked some episodes like "Misadventures in babysitting", taken inspiration from episodes but reworked them to the point of unrecognizability like "Mind Your Mummy, Mario", completely cut episodes like THE BEAUTY OF KOOTIE UGHHHH CHEATSY WHYY LUIGI WHYYYYY, and written new episodes like "Koopa Infested Waters"!
ā¢The main story takes place about 6 years after they break out of the banishment zone (spent about 12 years there, but time works differently in that zone so to the mushroom kingdom it wasn't that long) and King Koopa returns to Darkland with the koopalings. It more or less follows the backstory of the cartoon, with some divergencies and details taken more seriously, but here's the official backstory if you want to hear it/haven't heard it before! ->
ā¢The character who differs the most from the OG source material is King Koopa. I cannot stress enough that he was created to be, raised, and seen by everyone as the embodiment of pure evil, completely incapable of feeling any kind of love, compassion or kindness. Spoiler alert, that turns out to not be true once the koopalings come around. The only thing, person, or whatever he's ever loved in his entire life is the Koopalings. This makes him even more dangerous to the mushroom kingdom, now having a very personal motive to take over the worlds so his children can have free reign over them. I'm not saying OG King Koopa doesn't love his kids because I believe he does, but I AM saying you'd never catch this rendition of Koopa belittling them or blaming them when a plan doesn't work. Brošlovesšhisškidsšlikešmadš
ā¢'Bowser' is NOT King Koopa's name, it's the name of his species of koopa. Like I've mentioned before, King Koopa and the Koopalings are a magically created species and the only ones of their kind. He's not really called just 'Bowser Koopa' either, more often referred to as THE Bowser Koopa. King Koopa doesn't have a name. The koopalings, in a formal setting, would also not be called by their names. For example, Bully wouldn't be presented as 'Bully Koopa'. He'd be called 'Bowser Koopa II'. This goes for middle names, too. Kooky Von Koopa would be 'Bowser Koopa IV'. Kootie Pie Koopa would be 'Bowser Koopa V' ect. ect...
ā¢The Koopalings' rough ages: Bully-18, Cheatsy-17, Kooky-16, Kootie-15, Big Mouth- 14, Hip n Hop-6. All are still babies in terms of a Koopa's age range. King Koopa is around 70. Itās unknown how long heāll live, as heās the first of his kind, but heās still seemingly in his prime despite being battle worn and shows no signs of slowing down with age. He was also created with living a very long time in mind, so itās very possible he could live for centuries.
ā¢Though Hip and Hop hatched in the banishment zone, they all escaped back to Darkland very soon after and don't have any memories of what it was like. The other Koopalings have invaluable survival and combat skills they learned even younger than the twins, making King Koopa trust in their ability to wreak havoc on the mushroom kingdom and keep themselves safe. The twins, however, are forbidden to go off on their own with their sheltered and naive worldview. Still, they do sneak off to TRY and cause some kind of trouble (usually for Luigi because they're scared of Mario lol). They're hardly a real threat on their own and Mario and Co. handle them with kid gloves, or even SAVE them from their own bad ideas in some instances.
ā¢Seeing the obvious change and ability to feel in Koopa since returning with his children, Mario and Co. hold out hope that there's a chance the Koopa family could accept to live in peace with the rest of the world. Unfortunately, the need to conquer is hardwired into their beings and will be a tough block to break.
That nasty fella is actually named Haymr! Heās my retellingās version of the character Wizenheimer from the SMW cartoon. I really struggled trying to figure out what I was going to call him, because on one hand I donāt want to include any video game exclusive content in my reimagining (King Koopaās design is the exception, it had to be done for lore purposes), as Iām working soley off the content of the cartoons. But on the other hand, you could not PAY MEEEE enough to call the most evil disgusting awful character in the entirety of my lore WIZENHEIMER dawg. Iām obviously not against characters having stupid names, peep the koopalings, but WIZENHEIMERā Canāt do it. Haymr is his name in the Arabic dub so I settled with that lol. He definitely plays a bit of a Kamek-like role pre-story, but Kamekās way cooler than this scumbag so we donāt associate them <3
Iām gonna reveal a lot about him soon, but hereās a few basics:
-Haymr is the creator of King Koopa and the koopalings.
-The Koopa family is entirely resistant to his magic. Created via his magic themselves, they cannot be harmed or influenced by his sorcery.
-He was originally just a normal koopa. How he obtained his power is a mystery, but it's linked to the red stone on his staff. It's implied that he no longer has a soul, but it's never confirmed if the implication is literal or just figurative. He's unnaturally old and is in a constant state of rot on the inside.
-Like in the SMW cartoon he currently lives in a haunted house in the enchanted forest, but was once King Koopa's "second"-in-command living in the castle.
-His biggest regret is creating the koopalings.
-Voice claim:
Side note: The song 'Wizard' in Ghosts R Us is legitimately a banger I listen to it in the car and on walks all the time. Why are the songs in SMW actually awesome dawg
