"My mother, my sister and I left my father's home to start a better life without him when I was ten years old. Because of this, I haven't been able to go to school in Taiwan. The education that I did receive was mostly from work, great people I met during my upbringing, but also a lot from television. In Taiwan, we have some great cable TV channels that educate viewers. One of those channels was HBO which is where I learned my English from. Besides that I love movies. Especially Almodovar films. I learned a lot as well from watching movies. Not just knowledge, but also how movies and documentaries are structured. Ever since I had a camera -the Sony TRV 500- of my own I would film a lot of images of my family, daily life and of my mother. As from 2014 I thought it was time to call in a group of cinematographers and filmmakers to help me with a documentary that I needed to make. It is called Ri Chang Dui Hua | Small Talk (2016) and it's about my wish to understand my mother. She was never at home, always out and about with her girlfriends instead and I always knew that she is a lesbian. The film consists of the images I filmed from 1998 to 2014 and the images from my crew film after 2014. It's all pure coincidence how it fits all perfectly. I guess that is the magic of post-production and I'm very happy with the outcome." - Hui-Chen Huang. __________________________________ Photo and story by Feargal Agard ___________________________________ #HoFA #HumansofFilmAmsterdam #Amsterdam #SmallTalk #movies #streetphotography #Netherlands #humansofinstagram #HuiChenHuang #film #photooftheday #womenpower #documentary #photography #humanstories #humans #instafilm #instawesome #instagood #instamood #humansofjoy #slickerthanyouraverage #sonytrv500 #humansofny #sony #taiwan #almodovarfilms #HBO #RiChangDuiHua (at Amsterdam, Netherlands)
"The TV series The End of the F***ing World (2017) made a huge impression on me. The series is about James and Alyssa. He believes that he is a psychopath and she is an angry new girl at school. They connect and begin to date each other in the weirdest way and decide to go on a road trip to search for her real father. There are eight episodes of about 25 minutes each. Itâs cinematographically bizarre, sick and beautiful and the music is fantastic. It has become my favorite series because of the way itâs filmed the angles, the colors tones, and the theme. All of this causes for particular emotions and also a lot of blood, which Iâd rather not prefer to see." - Girl with Glasses. âą âThat is really a good summary of the series." - Girl without Glasses. âą âI think I like watching films where people are kind of broken. People who had a bad experience growing up and who arenât capable to function well within society. Thereâs often good acting and that is definitely the case in this TV series. I think everybody knows a person who has gone through something similar like that. I also had some difficulties growing up, but it was never as bad as in this series." - Girl with Glasses. ________________________________ Photo and story by Feargal Agard ________________________________ #HoFA #HumansofFilmAmsterdam #Amsterdam #tvseries #netflix #streetphotography #Instatvseries #humansofinstagram #instadaily #instarealness #film #photooftheday #theendofthefuckingworld #jessicabarden #photography #humanstories #humans #instafilm #instawesome #instagood #instamood #humansofjoy #followme #slickerthanyouraverage #british #humansofny #amazingstories #psychopath #alexlawther (at Amsterdam, Netherlands)
"Wakanda for Life!" "It's a line that inspired me from Ryan Coogler's film Black Panther (2018). Chadwick Boseman plays a character named T'Challa, the King of Wakanda, which is an isolated, technologically advanced African nation. Eventually, he has to save the world. This film showed me how I have actually always seen and experienced Africa. Most importantly it displayed how I think that it could be like for all Africans, Afro-Caribbeans, Afro-Americans and for the entire African diaspora. It's very beautiful to see the responses that all these people have because of this film. It makes everyone so proud. Then again, Africa is a part that does stand far away from us. For example, I am of African descent, but what is that precisely? Next, to that, it can be translated in a very beautiful way as it notifies us but also signifies what has been missing all along for a long time. I think that for a lot of people it is something that they are often confronted with especially if you are a member of the African diaspora living in a western country. You don't actually know what being of African descent really is. You don't know where in Africa you are from. Most haven't even been to the continent of Africa. All that we have now is the beautiful depiction of a maybe even utopic display of how Africa could be. The visual part is what has been missing all along for a lot of people. Including me. and it is translated in the best way with this film. That is why the line, 'Wakanda for life!' is inspiring to me. It shows me my roots and a place to call home." __________________________________ Photo and story by Feargal Agard ___________________________________ #HoFA #HumansofFilmAmsterdam #Amsterdam #BlackPanther #movies #streetphotography #Netherlands #humansofinstagram #Tchalla #RyanCoogler #film #photooftheday #Africa #Wakandaforlife #photography #humanstories #humans #instafilm #instawesome #instagood #instamood #humansofjoy #followme #slickerthanyouraverage #Wakanda #humansofny #Chadwickboseman #Africandiaspora (at Amsterdam, Netherlands)
"I saw The Seventh Sign (1988) when I was a lot younger. I think Demi Moore played the role of the main character. It's funny because when I watched it again a year ago I thought to myself what an uninteresting film with bad special effects, but back then it influenced me. Because I was a young unaware kid who was raised in a very religious family and the story which was about a pregnant woman who is haunted by dreams, a mysterious person who comes to live with her and strange events that could lead to the end of humanity. All of this told me that there is more out there. This biblical, but also Judean type of story made me realize that not everyone has the same religion and not everyone believes in a god. It made me research things like the laws of nature, free-thinking, but even conspiracy theories. It was basically a turning point in my life and my own consciousness. Not everyone has always supported me. I come from a religious family and they probably thought that I would snap out of it after a while. But ever since I have been living on my own I have been able to be closer to myself and I undertake things based on what I feel. My intuition is my religion. I do not solely live as an individual. I totally understand that all humans need to stay in touch with each other and that we need each other, but I definitely listen to my own feelings. I do not allow them to be guided by a collective that tries to tell me that they do things a certain way and therefore I should follow their ways." __________________________________ Photo and story by Feargal Agard ___________________________________ #HoFA #HumansofFilmAmsterdam #Amsterdam #Theseventhsign #movies #streetphotography #Netherlands #humansofinstagram #seventhsign #demimoore #film #photooftheday #religion #theguff #photography #humanstories #humans #instafilm #instawesome #instagood #instamood #humansofjoy #followme #slickerthanyouraverage #judean #humansofny #amazingstories #consciousness (at Amsterdam, Netherlands)

âWhen I was growing up, there were two films that left a life-long impression with me. I forgot the name of one, but the first was about a family of foxes with seven cubs. The foxes were constantly looking for food, but as the winter became harsher the cubs would die one by one. The fact that the family fell apart because of this, moved me so much. I come from a family of seven kids, but I was adopted by a Duitch family when I was just one year old. Being adopted can be a struggle sometimes. But itâs also a long life gold mine for making art. My Korean parents arenât alive anymore and one brother and a sister passed at a very young age. Come to think of it, it is actually crazy how many parallels there are with the family of foxes and mine. Movies about death and loss always leave the biggest impression with me. Even more when children are involved with it. There is also a scene in Nobodyâs boy RĂ©mi (1977) where RĂ©miâs foster father falls in the snow, freezing to his death which I never forgot. I noticed that my stories are always about loss, but also about acceptance of the past.â __________________________________ Photo and story by Feargal Agard ___________________________________ #HoFA #HumansofFilmAmsterdam #Amsterdam #CinemAsia #foxes #streetphotography #Netherlands #cubs #humansofinstagram #fun #nobodysboyremi #film #photooftheday #fox #photography #humanstories #humans #instafilm #instawesome #instagood #instamood #humansofjoy #followme #slickerthanyouraverage #korean #documentary #sevenfoxes #Cinemasiafilmfestival #remi #humansofny (at Hermitage Amsterdam)
âI can definitely relate with Scarlett Johanssonâs character in Lost in Translation (2003) by Sofia Coppola. I never fully fitted into a particular culture or country. I grew up in the Netherlands within a community connected to the Korean Protestant church, but to most of them I was very Dutch because I hung with a lot of Dutch friends as I went to a school where most people were Dutch. Thatâs why me and brother were sort of seen as the âblack sheepâ of the Korean community that I grew up in. It is important for them to stay close to their roots. Even when I live for a while in South-Korea I wasnât treated as a Korean. Due to the language, culture and custom differences. On the other hand, I also experienced that I wasnât really treated as a Dutch person at my Dutch school. They achieved that feeling within me through their discriminative and racist comments or just plain bullying. Some even said nasty comments about Chinese people to me while Iâm actually Korean. Itâs all so vague to me, because I didnât really know where I belonged. But when I began to study in the United Kingdom I was surrounded by people of different international backgrounds I realized that I donât have to belong anywhere per se. I see myself as a human being and not necessarily labeled as Dutch or Korean. Itâs a philosophy that works for me.â __________________________________ Photo and story by Feargal Agard ___________________________________ #HoFA #HumansofFilmAmsterdam #Amsterdam #CinemAsia #LostinTranslation #streetphotography #Netherlands # ScarlettJohansson #humansofinstagram #fun #film #photooftheday #internationalhumanbeing #photography #humanstories #humans #SofiaCoppola #instafilm #instawesome #instagood #Korean #instamood #SouthKorean #Dutch #slickerthanyouraverage #philosophy #filmmakers #protestantchurch #shallowfocus #CinemAsiaFilmFestival @cinemasianl (at Amsterdam, Netherlands)
âDuring my studies in Italy, years back, I had this struggle with coincidence or better said, coincidence with a purpose: synchronicity. For me thatâs when the magic happens while making a documentary. Like for example Grizzly Man (2005). Life is full of synchronicities. I like to believe you can sense them coming. Like last week, how I needed help with a speech and by coincidence someone came up offering me the exact help I needed. However, back in Italy, I learned you cannot force synchronicity to happen. In the documentary Grizzly Man by my hero Werner Herzog you see something similar in the story of Timothy Treadwell, who believed that he can communicate with wild grizzly bears. Werner Herzog doesnât believe that humans are able to communicate with wild animals, but he is a master in allowing his audience to form their own opinion. But to go back to me studying in Italy. I remember when I wanted to see Seven Years in Tibet (1997) in the cinemaâs, and I had this huge backpack with me. I thought it would be a wise idea to âstoreâ it in an empty garbage bin. I was trying to find out wether the garbage bin would be emptied or not in the 90 minutes I would be in the cinema. I concluded: that it wouldnât. I returned after the movie, and what do I see: the garbage trucks running up and down the streets. And an empty garbage bin. Sometimes hindered by my own rational, I admire that part of what Timothy believed in: looking outside the box of reason. The last footage of Treadwell is that of a bear unfamiliar to him. Treadwell mentioned that he did not feel comfortable around that particular bear. He may have sensed that this may be the bear that would kill him later that night. But some would say that he forced his luck.â __________________________________ Photo and story by Feargal Agard ___________________________________ #HoFA #HumansofFilmAmsterdam #Amsterdam #CinemAsia #Synchronicity #streetphotography #Netherlands #WernerHerzog #humansofinstagram #fun #SevenYearsinTibet #film #photooftheday #grizzlybears #photography #humanstories #humans #instafilm #instawesome #instagood #instamood #humansofjoy #followme #slickerthanyouraverage #TimothyTreadwell #documentary (at Amsterdam, Netherlands)
