Simplifying Life Through Your Internal Rhythm
Who isn't looking for ways to improve their emotional health, intellectual stamina, and overall physical well-being? Wondering where to start? Well, the answer to this could be as simple as drawing attention to and regulating your biorhythm, also know as your circadian rhythm. As a result of the Earth rotating on its axis cyclically every 24 hours and changing its position/exposure to the sun, there is a quiet, yet very easily observable response that every living thing expresses. Take the morning glory for example, when observed, we can see how it responds in preparation to receive maximum sunlight and closes during the darkness. It has a rhythm, a harmony, an intricate connection to the planet. Just like the morning glory, every one of us has this natural cycle that can be observed through our physiology; metabolism, hormonal fluctuations, behavior, etc. When complicated schedules and stresses get in the way, this cycle can be disturbed. However, through awareness of our connection to life, we can learn to match our cycles with the natural flow of life.
All of life and art is a reflection of nature, therefore if we tap into the essence of these natural laws and their flow, we can, therefore, allow ourselves to come closer to our true selves, because were born to resonate. Are you restless, dealing with insomnia, anxiety, depression? One of the quickest ways to feeling more balanced is by regulating this precious rhythm, which is essentially your sleep-wake cycle. To begin, try going to sleep and waking up on a schedule. When it comes to achieving balance, sleep is totally underrated. It is not singularly the act of sleep and resting the mind itself, but a matter of giving our complex bodies the essential opportunity to re-connect and re-balance with the Earth. For healthy sleep support, try supplementing with melatonin. Melatonin is the primary hormone that regulates all other hormones throughout the many systems in our bodies.
Our metabolism is a rhythm. The type and amount of food we eat, along with the intervals in which we have our meals governs the rate (rhythm) in which our bodies carries out complex processes, such as fat burning, muscle building and immune function, just to name a few. When we sleep, we fast and the body expends a lot of energy during this period (the very reason babies eat and sleep a lot!) It should not be spending this precious energy by digesting food. When you compare your weight in the morning to what it was the night before you will notice a few pounds difference. This is proof that your body is burning energy for cellular repair and function that would be otherwise difficult without this downtime.
The circadian rhythm is one of many natural occurrences that we don't have to concentrate on that occur within us. It is autonomous from our thoughts and endogenous to our being, meaning deeply programmed in our subconsciousness to constitute the flow of life. Apart from the rhythm of our metabolism, there is the rhythm of our brainwaves, that regulate our state of consciousness. There is the electromagnetic rhythm that can be monitored when our hearts are linked to an EKG, there is the rhythm of our body temperature that fluctuates according to our daily activities. On a deeper level, the circumstances that we find ourselves in, the people we are drawn towards and vice versa are all involved in this rhythm. Breathing, yawning, heart rate speeding in response to excitement, thinking of someone and you receiving their call in that very same moment are all connected to the unseen rhythm of life. Observe your thoughts and notice that they have a rhythm as well.
We have a simple task and that is to support this harmony through our behavior. The time we spend in nature supports this connection. Breathing in fresh air, surrounding ourselves with the vibration of animals, which are the purest source of connection to what we know as life. Meditation in the morning and evening, and connecting with harmonious reflections of ourselves solidifies this rhythm and our connection to that from which we came.
