44-year-old Tina Turner's 5th solo album was released on 29 May 1984.

By 1983, Turner was mostly forgotten, performing in hotel ballrooms and small clubs. She had not released an album since 1979 and only one of her solo albums had charted (1975's Acid Queen peaked at #155). Then, in late 1983, she had a surprise hit with a cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," which peaked at #26 in the US and #6 in the UK.

This led to John Carter signing her to Capitol Records (despite objections from the label executives) and assembling eight different producers for Private Dancer (Carter produced the title track).

The album would go on to sell more than 12 million copies and peak at #3 in the US (where it stayed for 10 weeks) and remain in the Top Ten for 39 weeks. The lead single from the album, "What's Love Got to Do with It" would be Turner's first (and only) #1 single. Written by Terry Britten and Graham Lyle, "What's Love Got to Do with It" received Grammy awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Private Dancer was nominated for Album of the Year (which went to Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down).

As we reach the unfortunately politicized and commercialized finale of the 2026 World Cup, one might well wonder when and where the next World Cup tournament will be held. No, Mr. Trump, you cannot host the event again, unless you’re still around 12 years from now. The World Cup only takes place every four years, and the next two events are already solidly committed. 2034 will be held in Saudi Arabia, but the next tournament, in 2030, will be far more complicated. Whereas this year’s event was split between the USA, Canada, and Mexico, 2030 will be spread over six countries. It will be the 100th anniversary of the World Cup, so to honor this centenary, it will open in the original 1930 location, Uruguay. The next couple matches will be in Paraguay and Argentina. After that, it will head northeast and across the ocean, to be split between Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Confusing? Yes, and perhaps more conducive to television viewing than to travelers, depending on which countries are playing where. But can it be as exciting as this year’s World Cup? That, of course, remains to be seen, but the 2026 tournament will certainly be a very tough act to follow. Enjoy today’s match!

Sixty-two years after they released their first album, The Rolling Stones released yet another new album today. It is their 25th studio album. (32nd studio release, depending on how you count them.) I have been listening to this band for 62 years, and am delighted that they still have more to give. There is an excellent ensemble of guest musicians on Foreign Tongues. They also do a couple of fine covers by Amy Winehouse and Chuck Berry. So I'm going to kick off the weekend with their bluesy rendition of Chuck Berry's Beautiful Delilah.
