Support Dominicans Love Haitians Movement To Help Us Support & Empower Black Artists & Black Lives
Dominicans Love Haitians Movement started in 2016 as an art project by the Founder, Clarivel Ruiz, and morphed into a non-for-profit in 2018. Clarivel initiated the project by bringing Dominican and Haitians artists, musicians, and poets together to celebrate their commonalities, counteracting the narrative of differences amongst people who share an island, music, food, history, and family. Its mission is to use various art modalities to unlearn racism, healing from the traumas of colonization.
One of our favorite campaigns of the organization is the Black Doll Project. The Black Doll project is sending donated Black dolls overseas to Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico as an affirmation of our Blackness, especially with so many negative messages that bombard us every day through media, the educational system, and society in general. Our children must receive messages that uplift their very existence; it is imperative.
Since November of 2017, they have raised over 400 dolls given to children in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In 2019, for the first time, they partnered with The Dream Project in Cabarete, Dominican Republic beginning the Summer Camp: Unlearning Racism Art Workshops with a cohort of artists and social activists to use artmaking: doll, mural/visual and photoessays to have these difficult and necessary conversations around racism, bullying, gender, and what community means to them. They worked with 34 children ages 7-21 years of age.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, our 2020 Summer Camp and many of our programming and artist workshops, were postponed; however, right now, we have 100+ dolls waiting to be sent overseas to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, where local artists and social activists will conduct unlearning racism workshops.
Your kind donations will support the organization in various ways, including but not limited to:
Materials for Black dollmaking workshops
Shipping and containers for oversea shipments of Black Dolls
Honorarium for speakers/guests
Making and editing video content
Updating Website
Fees for website, Zoom, marketing, and other operation costs
No amount that you give is ever too small.
Your donation is tax-deductible and can be sent to the organization’s fiscal sponsor at https://www.culturepush.org/dominicanslovehaitians-donation-page.
You can also visit the website and view some of the fantastic things they’ve been doing at https://www.dominicanslovehaitians.com/home.

At only 27 years old, Ciara Sivels is the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in nuclear engineering from the University of Michigan. The Chesapeake, Virginia, native has accomplished a major win at the top nuclear engineering program in the country. In October, Sivels successfully presented her thesis on “Development of an Advanced Radioxenon Detector for Nuclear Explosion Monitoring,” but she didn’t always have a passion for science. When she graduated from high school, the scholar wanted to study culinary arts. It wasn’t until her teacher encouraged her to try her hand at STEM that she developed interests in nuclear science and engineering. “I remember the teacher from that class saying, ‘Oh, you’re really smart, you should think about doing something other than culinary,’” she shared in an interview with Huffington Post. “So that’s kinda how I switched over into engineering and eventually ended up at MIT and ended up in the nuclear program.” The road to earning her Ph.D. was...
