No matter how independent I am and how much I love being single, there will always be a small part of me that will miss having a partner. There are some tiny voids that platonic relationships just cannot fill. • • Every so often a voice in the back of my head will whisper dark thoughts. Every so often I will feel a bit lonely. Especially these days where there are many struggles to face with the pandemic; coping with anxiety, starting a new job, worrying about money and the many unanswered questions. • • And I have been fighting them with strength even I didn’t know I had. And if I may say so myself, I have managed so well so far. And I am so proud of myself. But I also wanted to share the “ugly” side, to show you that despite my strength and love for single life - there will always be a down side and bad moments. • • And that’s okay. We all have those moments, and as long as we accept that and trust that they will pass, and that we can do it - we will come out stronger. • • • How about you? While I do feel like it would be nice to have a partner every so often, more times than not, I prefer my single life - I have so many more opportunities spread out for me, because I don’t have someone else to consider while making life changing decisions – like moving to London for example. • • I don’t have anyone nagging me, or someone I constantly need to update about my whereabouts, and best of all – I get to keep my precious quiet time to myself without feeling bad. And if I ever need companionship – I have so many other platonic relationships, that fill me up more than any romantic relationship ever did. • • If someone comes along, and it feels right to be with him, I won’t send him away for the sake of being single. But the fact is, that so far there hasn’t been anyone who is worth it. And my life is so good, and I love it, and I will only change my status for someone who will make it even better, not for just anyone. • • There are pros and cons to each side, and neither is significantly better or worse – but right now my reality is, that I am single and have yet to find someone worth changing that. So instead of floundering over it, I choose to look at the positive side of it. I may be thirty and single, and I may not have kids, but my life is no less better because of it. • • I strongly believe that my relationship status has nothing to do with who I am, at least not in the “normal way” of thinking. What it does say about me, is that I am a strong independent woman, who doesn’t need a relationship to be happy. I love my freedom and space, that I don’t owe anything to anyone. • • • How about you? From the age of 16 until 26, I was always in long term relationships, and I’ve had a few short relationships since; 1 month here, two months there, but nothing that felt right, or worth devoting my time, which I can dedicate to different things that are no less important, if not more. • • After my last serious relationship, I came out of it jaded and devoid of strength for a new one. It cut off my wings, and I was in no rush to jump back into the pond. I wanted to be alone, rediscover myself and grow my energy and passion back. • • Single life allowed me to do and try new things I wouldn’t have otherwise. It gave me the freedom I so desperately yearned for, without having to take someone else’s opinions and feelings into consideration. • • But most of all, it gave me the opportunity to take care of myself and grow comfortable in my own company. I learned to be independent and love myself. • • I may feel like I need and want someone every so often, but single life allowed me to develop that sense of comfort in my own skin that nothing else could.
