The 3 bills, rushed through parliament in the summer, will deregulate food crop markets and remove government-sanctioned minimum pricing. Farmers believe this will lead to corporate takeovers of their small farms and a crash in prices.

Police used tear gas, water cannon, trucks weighed down with sand, barbed wire and trenches, but failed to stop the farmers entering the city. A police request to convert 9 sports stadiums into jails was thankfully rejected by the city council.

This year farmers in both Punjab and Haryana were forced to sell basmati rice at six hundred rupees below the ₹2,700 per quintal they got last year. That's ₹21/kg - far less than market price of even the normal rice forget Basmati. And price of Basmati is outside MSP regime - it is purely decided by market forces. One of the primary reason why farmers don't switch to Basmati which uses less water than normal rice variety - a crucial factor in water depleted regions of Punjab and Haryana.

The women at Tikri and Singhu are not first-time protesters. Their participation is not so spontaneous. Women in Punjab have been mobilised for at least a decade, mostly by Left farmer unions. These women are from marginal and small landholding farming families. During the process of mobilisation, farmer unions have encountered the questions of women’s citizenship, their right to the public sphere, and their right to participate in popular struggles. They have engaged with these issues seriously. These questions have not been resolved. But these have been opened up for debate. Many farm unions have been marking March 8, the international women’s day, in a big way. They invite experts from outside and hold conventions in rural Punjab. One of the unions—the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan)—has a slogan that says, ‘When women join a movement, the movement blooms.’
