So I’ve got a question you guys about something for a future fanfic:

I plan on doing a re-telling of RTTE with my OCs. While I’ll be getting rid of a lot of main issues with the series, there’s one part that I’d like your opinion on.

What do I do with “Wings of War Parts 1-2″?

Any of you guys who’ve been on my blog — and definitely those of you intimates who PM me on a semi-regular basis for any length of time — probably know of my... enthusiastic rants about THIS particular episode *in fact, I aim to write an article solely where I write that out in explicit and thorough detail*. (Though there are several episodes that have my strongly-but-cleanly-worded opinions.)

The fact of the matter is, I’m debating whether to keep Hiccup’s irrationality in this retelling for drama purposes for the sake of the OCs’ POVs on the matter, (because I think it’d be cool), or if I should just alter the episode and have it where Hiccup isn’t so... out-of-character?

While I kinda feel like I’d like to keep it for drama’s sake, I feel like I’d be a hypocrite by doing this despite my many rants about it, and for the fact that Hiccup WILL be OOC. Because he IS. He’s focusing on saving the Singetails — aggressive wild dragons who had no qualms about killing them last time before the Flyers acquired them — rather than their OWN dragons and the Riders in general and was never concerned about their own safety. And also him just flying off, leaving everyone’s butts hanging out in the wind, to search for an alternative to “save the Singetails” that NOBODY has time for! AND almost DIED doing it.

Needless to say, my OCs, particularly and especially and mostly his adopted brother, will be having a HARD time with this.

So my question is that should I 1) keep this in my retelling, even if Hiccup’s OOC and the episode’s canon is questionable at best concerning this particular plot point, solely for the dramatic flair, or 2) alter the episode and change Hiccup’s behavior and find an alternate way to handle this?

I don’t suspect that coloration would be much of a factor in a dragon becoming a Titan Wing, but there is definitely something to be said about the size of Krogan’s Singetail! We know for a fact that Titan Wings are the final stages of dragons and are the largest of their species. Sure, there will always be small and large members within a species, but if a dragon is extraordinarily large, it does make it more likely to be a Titan. 

And looking at these comparison photographs, Krogan’s Singetail isn’t just SLIGHTLY larger than other members of its kind. It’s MARKEDLY larger than other members of its kind (especially look at the first two pictures, between Krogan riding his Singetail and another fighter riding a different Singetail):
