Nervous (Shawn Mendes x Reader)
(A/N) I am devoting this oneshot to one of my dearest friends. She had the idea for this. I mean, I would tag you, but you wonât tell me your Tumblr name, so yeah...anyway, you mean so much to me. Thank you for always supporting me and being by my side.
Also, this is inspired by Shawnâs song âNervousâ. I wonât link it since Tumblr is...well...you know. But listen to it! Iâve been hearing it non-stop while Iâve been writing this the last few hours.
Disclaimer: I donât own the song!

I sighed in relief when I could finally sit down in my usual seat in my usual cafĂŠ at the usual time. The last few days I couldnât come here because of work and now I was set on enjoying some hours in my favourite place on earth. Tony, the owner of the cafĂŠ walked towards me with my usual order in hand. âHi there, stranger.â She grinned and sat down opposite of me, after she place my coffee in front of me. âOh, fuck off.â I laughed and she joined in. âWhat took you so long to come here again?â I shrugged and took a sip of the light-brown liquid in front of me. âYou know, work. Oh wait, no, you donât know about work.â She chuckled and shook her head at my words. âHey! Itâs hard work running a cafĂŠ! I-.â âSure, especially when you spend more time chatting with your customers then actually working.â âOnly with my favourite customers.â She jumped from her seat and winked at me, before she ran off to take care of a new customer. I chuckled at her behaviour, while my gaze drifted off to the people outside of the cafĂŠ. It was a rainy Sunday, perfect for spending the entire day in here, but I had a shift until half an hour ago, so I could only spend the few hours left of the day here. I looked back over to Tony, who was getting the order of one of the customers ready. She shot me a smile, before she turned back to the cup in front of him and a soft smile appeared on my lips. I knew how hard it was to run a cafĂŠ, and it was hard as hell, but it was fun to tease Tony about her ways.
Turning back to my coffee, I fished my book out of my bag and began reading where I left off. My cup was soon empty, but quickly replaced with a full one. Tony stood in front of me, smirking. âWhat?â âHow many times have you read this book already?â I chuckled and shrugged. âItâs a good book.â She shook her head grinning and sat down again. I put my bookmark in and laid the book on the table. âAre you alright?â She shrugged and yawned, letting me know how she felt. âMaybe you should get someone to help you out? You look a bit tired.â She shot me a crooked smile before she shrugged again. âNo one is wo-.â âWorthy of working in you hold temple. I know. But still, think about it.â She smiled and nodded, before she stood up again and checked the watch on her wrist. A new message lit up the screen and she smiled. âIâll be back in a second.â I nodded and watched her run off towards the back of the cafĂŠ. And she really returned just a few seconds later, accompanied by a man with a guitar case in his hand. He quickly thanked her, before he walked to an improvised stage that was near my table. While the man pulled a chair up and adjusted the microphone to the right height, Tony walked back to me. âYou might want to get closer. He is oddly popular.â And she was right. Only a few seconds later, a group of young girls entered the cafĂŠ and squealed when they saw the man. He sent them a polite smile and wave before his eyes locked on mine. I immediately sat up straight and started to bite my lower lip. I noticed a faint blush on his cheeks, before his eyes moved to stare at the strings of his guitar. The girls hadnât noticed anything and simply pulled up some chairs in front of the stage. Tony smirked. âDoes someone have a crush?â I rolled my eyes and waved my hand dismissingly. âAs if. No if youâd allow it, Iâd like to continue with my book.â She walked over to the man, while she was giggling. I picked my book back up and tried to continue reading, but my eyes constantly moved over the edge of my book and glanced at Tony and the man. They were chatting, until another man walked up to the two of them. He was carrying a brown box drum and sat it down beside the chair of the other man. While the two men talked, Tony quickly looked back at me and noticed my curious look. She told the men something and they nodded. Then she quickly walked towards me. She sat down across from me and grinned knowingly. âWhat do you want to know?â I rolled my eyes but smiled. Quickly putting my book back down and leaned onto my elbows and glanced at the first man. His brown locksâŚthe brown eyesâŚthe tattoo on his handâŚ
âWhatâs his name?â âShawn.â âWhere do you know him from?â âWe have a mutual friend. I met him at a party where he played, so I asked him if he wanted to play here from time to time and he said yes. Weâve been friends since.â âWhy have I never met him?â âBecause youâre never here when he plays.â âIs he single?â She chuckled. âYes.â âIs there an empty seat at the front?â She nodded and picked up my coffee, leading me to the front of the crowd. After she placed my cup on a table next to my chair, the second man raised his hand and got Tonyâs attention. She walked to the two and quickly nodded, before she hurried behind the corner to get something. And then my eyes met his again and he shot me a shy smile, before the second man grabbed his attention.
The moment our eyes met, I could feel my heart speed up. I was tuning my guitar, something that had become a routine for me, but suddenly my hands were shaking and unsteady. I started tugging at the collar of my white shirt and squirming on my seat. Tony talked to the girl, but she soon picked up her book and Tony walked to me. âHi there, Mister popular.â I chuckled at the nickname. While Tony and I talked, my gaze wandered back to the girl more often then I would ever admit. Tony giggled. âHer name is Y/N.â My head snapped towards her. âWhat?â She rolled her eyes, grinning from ear to ear. âJust thought you would like to know.â I swallowed the lump in my throat, before I directed my eyes back to Y/N. Right in that moment, Josh walked in with the box drum. He sat it up next to my chair and grinned at me.
âYou ready, champ?â I nodded and we continued to chat, until Tony quickly told us that she had to do something. She walked to Y/N and sat down opposite from her. Y/N looked back at me, but I quickly looked at Josh, who had noticed my wandering eyes. âSheâs cute.â âHands off.â He chuckled at my reaction and held up his right hand, showing me the ring. âDonât forget, champ, Iâm a married man.â I chuckled too and began to concentrate on my guitar again. But all my concentration was gone when I noticed movement in front of me. Tony was leading Y/N right to the front row and sat her down directly in front of me. Josh raised his hand, grabbing Tonyâs attention. We quickly asked for something to drink and Tony nodded, before she hurried behind the counter to get the drinks. While we were waiting, my eyes found Y/Nâs again and I smiled shyly at her. She too, send me a small smile, before she looked at her fidgeting fingers in her lap. When I noticed that she was just as nervous as me, I smiled to myself, while I finished tuning my guitar.
Tony soon returned with our drinks and I quietly thanked her, took a sip from my water and placed it underneath my chair. Then it was time to begin. I quickly said âHelloâ and thanked everyone for coming, before I started to play. We started with a few covers. My eyes shifted from the crowd, to the strings of my guitar and to Y/N. Every time my eyes met hers and I saw the smile on her face I broke into a wide grin. The evening went surprisingly smooth and soon it was time to say end the concert. We played the last song, before we bid everyone goodnight.
The customers left the cafĂŠ, until only Tony, Josh, Y/N and I were left. Josh asked for a tea and Tony disappeared, getting it ready. Josh followed her, telling her a joke, leaving Y/N and I alone. I put my guitar into its case, before I straightened up and looked at the girl. She still sat in the chair and sipped her coffee. When I noticed that she was looking at me, I felt my hands getting sweaty and quickly wiped them on my jeans. I cringed at the obvious sign, making her giggle. And that giggle broke the ice. She put her coffee down and stood up, walking over to me. She held out her hand and smiled. âIâm Y/N.â Nervous as I was, I responded with the stupidest thing I could. âI know.â She looked at me, surprise written all over her face. I mustâve looked mortified, because she started to laugh again. âGood, that makes things easier.â I chuckled too and rubbed the back of my neck, feeling my cheeks light up with embarrassment. I finally shook her still outstretched hand and introduced myself. âIâm Shawn.â She grinned. âI know.â I laughed with her, but before we could say or do anything else, Tony and Josh returned. âOkay, I officially need a new water heater.â Y/N chuckled at Tonyâs words, who sighed. âWell, letâs get home. Iâm tired.â Y/N mumbled something along getting help for the cafĂŠ, which earned a death glare from Tony.
When everyone was ready, we gathered in front of the cafĂŠ and watched Tony lock it. âIâm here with my car.â Josh pointed behind himself. âYeah, me too. Do you want a ride?â Tony looked at Y/N with a raised eyebrow, but Y/N shook her head. âNah, I feel like walking. But thanks.â She smiled at the other woman and the two hugged, before Tony waved goodbye and ran to her car. Josh also walked away after he said goodbye, leaving me and Y/N alone. Again.
She turned to me with a small smile on her lips. âWhich direction?â I pointed in the direction I was facing, and her smile turned into a grin. âMe too.â Together we started to walk in that direction. At first there was an uncomfortable silence hanging over us, but when we felt the first raindrops, the silence was gone. âOh, for fuc-!â A loud laugh interrupted me, and I turned to Y/N, seeing her grinning at the sky. She had her arms stretched out at her sides and her eyes closed. I chuckled when I saw that and she turned to me with a wide grin. âWhat?â âYou look beautiful.â She blushed and the grin turned into a shocked expression. I couldâve thrown myself in front of one of the passing cars. I winced and closed my eyes, not wanting to look at her when she rejected me. But my eyes quickly opened, when I felt lips press against my cheek. âYou donât look too bad yourself.â She was smiling at me and I could have melted on the spot. She interlaced her fingers with mine and raised an eyebrow. âDo you mind the rain?â I shook my head. âNot with you.â She giggled and we started to walk again. There was silence again, but this time it was comfortable.
By the time we took a right turn, the rain was getting stronger and soon Y/N and I were drenched. She was still smiling, while I had to concentrate to keep my teeth from clattering. She still noticed, though. âMy apartment is right there, want to come upstairs for a bit?â Without thinking I nodded and let her pull me across the street.
When we entered her apartment, she immediately turned the heat up. âYou can take a shower. I got some clothes from my brother, they should fit you.â She smiled so sweetly, that I only nodded. She quickly led me to the bathroom and showed me everything. Then she got me her brotherâs clothes and took some towels with her, so that she could get dry too.
As soon as I closed the bathroom door behind myself, I leaned against it and took a deep breath. I couldnât believe what I was doing. I had never been so confident and comfortable around a boy before. I took another deep breath, before I pushed myself off the door. I quickly undressed and dried my body with the towels I got, before I pulled some pyjamas on. Wrapping my hair in a towel, I moved to the kitchen and put some water in the heater, to make some tea.
While I was waiting for the water to start boiling, I looked around my apartment, glad that Iâd cleaned it last evening. While I poured the hot water into two cups, I heard the shower turn off. Shawn must be done. I carried the two cups to the living room table and got some tea bags out to let Shawn choose his flavour. While I was waiting, I turned the TV one and zapped through the channels, searching for something watchable. But I found nothing, so I switched to Netflix instead. Just then did Shawn walk into the living room. He smiled and flopped down beside me. âI made some tea if youâd like some.â He smiled and quietly thanked me, taking the berry flavoured tea bag. âAre your clothes in the bathroom? I can put them in the dryer.â I was about to stand up, but he waved his hand dismissively. âDonât worry. I hung them up. Theyâll be dry by tomorrow.â He blushed again, realising that heâd just invited himself to stay overnight. I chuckled at his reaction. âJust so you know, Iâd like for you to stay overnight.â He laughed. âWell, that makes me glad. And, I promise, usually Iâm smoother.â I giggled and nodded, believing him. âGood to know.â I nudged his side with my elbow and handed him the remote. âYou choose.â He grinned and five minutes later, âInside Outâ was playing.
While we watched the movie, I started to cuddle up to Shawn, enjoying his warmth. At some point, he noticed that my hair was still wet and got up to get a blow dryer. I tried to convince him that it wasnât a big deal, but he ignored my protests and got it anyway, pausing the movie and quickly drying my hair for me. I chuckled at him, but he just shrugged when he sat back down and raised an arm, allowing me to get closer to him.
I would never admit it, but I soon started to feel tired and couldnât keep the yawns in anymore. Shawn noticed, but only chuckled, until my eyes dropped shut. I could feel him moving around but was too tired to open my eyes. I only noticed that heâd turned the TV off and picked me up. I soon felt my soft mattress under me and cuddled into my pillows and blankets. I could hear him chuckle, before he pressed a light kiss to my forehead. He whispered a soft goodbye and was about to walk away, when I caught the hem of the shirt he was wearing. âStay.â He started to protest, but I insisted that he staid here and he finally climbed into bed behind me, wrapping his strong arms around me. I cuddled up to him as close as I could and fell into a deep sleep.
Next morning, Shawn gave me his number before he left. Weâve been texting ever since and when he told me that heâd play at the cafĂŠ again, I made sure that I had time that evening. I was sitting in the front row again and grinned while Shawn was tuning his guitar.
It started like the last time, some covers, but then something unexpected happened. âSo, this is a song I recently wrote. Itâs pretty personal but let me know what you think.â He winked at me before he started to play, and while he sang, I immediately knew what those lyrics were about.
I saw you on a Sunday in a cafĂŠ
And all you did was look my way
And my heart started to race
And my hands started to shake, yeah
I heard you asked about me through a friend
My adrenaline kicked in
'Cause I've been askin' 'bout you too
And now we're out here in this roomI get a little bit nervous around you
Get a little bit stressed out when I think about you
Get a little excited
Baby, when I think about you, yeah
Talk a little too much around you (I talk a little too much, yeah)
Get a little self-conscious (I get a little self-conscious)
When I think about you
Get a little excited (I get a little excited)
Baby, when I think about you
Yeah, when I think about you, babe
We walked in the rain
A couple blocks to your apartment
You told me to come inside
Caught me staring in your eyes
And I'm not usually like this
But I like what you're doing to me
Ah, what you're doing to meI get a little bit nervous (I get a little bit nervous)
Around you
Get a little bit stressed out (I get a little bit stressed out)
When I think about you
Get a little excited (I get a little excited)
Baby, when I think about you
Yeah, when I think about you, babe (oh yeah)Talk a little too much (I talk a little too much, yeah)
Around you
Get a little self-conscious (I get a little self-conscious)
When I think about you
Get a little excited (I get a little excited)
Baby, when I think about you
Yeah, when I think about you, babe
You got me acting like I've never done this before
I promise I'll be ready when I walk through the door
And I don't know why
No, I don't know why
Yeah yeahI get a little bit nervous (I get a little bit nervous)
Around you
Get a little bit stressed out (I get a little bit stressed out)
When I think about you
Get a little excited (I get a little excited)
Baby, when I think about you
Yeah, when I think about you, babe (oh yeah)Talk a little too much (I talk a little too much, yeah)
Around you
Get a little self-conscious (I get a little self-conscious)
When I think about you (I get a little self-conscious)
Get a little excited (I get a little excited)
Baby, when I think about you
Yeah, when I think about you, babe
I grinned and laughed through the whole performance, returning all of Shawnâs shy smiles. I was filled with glee and was easily the one who clapped the loudest when the song was over. Shawn quickly announced that that was his last song and bid everyone a âGoodnightâ. As soon as the other customers were gone, I jumped from my chair and wrapped my arms around Shawnâs neck. He wrapped his around my waist and pulled me even tighter against himself. âDid you like it?â He smiled shyly and I grinned from ear to ear. âI loved it.â I raised onto the tip of my toes and pressed a short kiss to his lips, before I pulled back again. But Shawn was having none of that. Before I could completely pull away, he was already leaning down, capturing my lips in a passionate kiss. I laughed into the kiss and pulled away when I finally needed air. I was smiling at him but flinched when there was a sudden flash. I looked out of the window to find the source and saw some of the girls from earlier. They were screaming and pointing at the pair. Shawn just laughed and pulled me into another kiss, making more flashes go off. âWhy the fuck are they taking photos of us?â Shawn raised an eyebrow and looked at Tony. âYou didnât tell her?â Tony shook her head, grinning. âItâs not my fault sheâs living in a bookstore.â Shawn chuckle and turned back to me. âTold me what?â âWellâŚthere is this possibility that Iâm a worldwide known singer.â I swallowed the lump in my throat and looked up at the man in front of him.
That couldnât be. Or could it? A lot of things would make senseâŚfor example the squealing girls the night I first saw him⌠I raised an eyebrow at Shawn, but he just shrugged. âIf thatâs the caseâŚletâs give those girls some more paparazzi material.â I pulled him into another kiss and flashes went off again, but I still smiled into the kiss.
âThank you Berlin! Youâve been amazing!â Shawn waved one more time at the screaming and cheering crowd, before he jogged off the stage. About thirty people immediately surrounded him, but he fought his way through them and to me, pulling me into a bone crashing hug. âHow was I?â He was beaming at me, sweat covering his face and panting, but I just smiled. âAmazing.â He grinned and pressed a quick kiss to my lips, before he turned to his manager, who winked at me before he turned back to Shawn and explained something about the tour to him. I quickly disappeared into Shawnâs room, where he could change and relax a bit, and sat down on the couch waiting for him. I was browsing through Instagram, smiling whenever something from Shawnâs account popped up, until he finally entered the room. âHi there.â I stood up and walked over to him, wrapping my arms around him. He did the same and we just stood there for a few minutes. Then I pulled away. âI have something for you.â He raised an eyebrow but smiled at me in his cute and shy way. I walked to my bag and pulled two things out, quickly hiding them behind my back. âWhich one do you want?â He chuckled. âSeriously babe?â I nodded, serious as ever. He thought for a second until he pointed to my right arm. I slowly brought my right hand to the front of my body and showed him what was hidden (more or less) in it. Shawn frowned when he saw the tiny shoe, before he realized. âNo.â I was biting my lower lip and nodding, while a gigantic smile appeared on his face. I then quickly pulled my left hand to the front and showed him the positive pregnancy test. âWeâre going to have a baby.â His voice was so quiet, I barely heard him, but he had a giant grin on his face. He picked me up and spun me around, almost knocking the flowers off his table. When he sat me down, he pulled me into a tight hug. âWe are going to have a baby.â He breathed again, before he pulled back abruptly. I could see in his eyes that he had an idea. I was already frowning, when he grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the room and back to the side of the stage. There were still tons of people, but they just jumped aside when Shawn and I ran past them.
He pulled me right back onto the stage and we were immediately surrounded by screams again. One of the cameras that was still turned on found us and we could be seen on the giant screen next to the stage. Confused, one of the workers handed Shawn a microphone and before I could register what he was about to do, he was yelling three words. âWE ARE PREGNANT!â I chuckled at him and he handed the microphone back to the worker. All around us, the fans were screaming and cheering, congratulating us on the good news. Shawn pulled me into a breath taking kiss and when he pulled back again he was grinning from ear to ear. Iâd never seen him look so happy.
Except maybe, when I said âYesâ when he proposed to me. But that, is a different story.
