This goes out to @noona-clock Admin T in honor of her birthday today! She inspired me to start writing again, so my first piece goes out to her! Thanks for always being a kind person to talk to and for loving this man as much (if not more although I will fight you for him) as I do đÂ

[Introduction]
Four years. You had been a debuted singer for four years now. You could barely remember the years of late practice nights, long street audition lines, and sore throats when you wouldnât stop rehearsing. Being alone and trying to get your foot in the door in the music industry had meant sacrifices.Â
The family supporting you from overseas never had to know that in the winter you had slept in every pair of sweats that you owned because it was either pay for your vocal lessons or pay for heating. Or that the days of you buying sweets and treats when you felt like it were over and that you were willing to go to a grocery store across town if it meant getting eggs slightly cheaper.Â
In the end, it had actually been the eggs that did it.Â
From someone videoing you singing while getting eggs, companies had started to reach out to you. Youâd signed with a small one and had been able to debut with your own EP almost a year after. After winning Best New Artist you began to gain more respect and fans and were given more freedom by your company to write and produce your own songs.Â
But always solo.Â
Itâs not that you didnât like other artists, but you were known for your vocal range and unique, deeper voice â not something easily paired with another singer. You enjoyed singing for drama soundtracks the best anyway, and singing solo allowed you to work on slower songs for shows without having to worry about producing the next summer hit that would catch in everyoneâs ear. Plus, you just worked better alone. Thatâs they way it always had been and you were comfortable that way. Â
Your company approached you about a new drama coming out named âDescendants of the Sunâ and when you heard the storyline and saw the leads, you knew you wanted to work on the project. But they told you there was a catch.Â
âY/N. A lot of artists are wanting to work on this project. Gummy has already signed on and thereâs talk of Davichi writing a song tooâ explained your manager, Jieun. You hadnât even had a chance to sit down in your studio before sheâd brought up your next big project.Â
âWell thatâs great! The more the merrier!âÂ
âThatâs just it. They already have their artists picked for the ballads and more emotional songs. They want to see if you can do something new.âÂ
âWhat do you mean?â you said, starting to get anxious.Â
âWell, just hear me out for a second.âÂ
Oh no. This canât be good you thought, mentally bracing yourself and slightly wishing you were sitting down.Â
âY/N, they want to see if youâll do something more upbeat and warm.âÂ
âOkay. Thatâs not what Iâm used to for my soundtrack pieces but that isnât a deal breaker. Why do I get the feeling thatâs not all?âÂ
âWell they want you to do a warm and romantic songâŚwith someone.âÂ
â⌠Someone? Like someone accompanying me? Great! Where do I sign?â you said, hoping that was the end of it and not wanting to hear what you knew was coming.Â
âNot an accompanist, y/n. Someone as inâŚâÂ
âPlease donât say itâŚâÂ
ââŚa duetâ she spit out.Â
âJieun-ssi! Itâs not that Iâm against working with someone, but you know that my voice doesnât blend easily, especially with other female voices. This is a bad idea because the song wouldnât come out right. The director canât possibly want thatâ you pleaded, grabbing your water and taking a drink to calm yourself down.Â
âWell, he doesnât actually. Not with another female. He actually already picked who he wants you to partner up with.âÂ
ââNot with another femaleâ? But Iâve never collaborated with another male singer. Does he want a female singer/male rapper duet? I mean I guess that wouldnât be too badâŚâ you started to think.Â
âY/N. Itâs not a rapperâ Jieun interrupted.Â
You paused. Thereâs no way I can duet with another male singer. âOur voices just wonât mixâ you said quietly.Â
âFirst off, you didnât say that in your head, just to let you know. Secondly, I actually think this could be a good pairing! Not only is he a strong vocalist, but heâs got a voice unique enough that I think it might just work! Plus, heâs big in the industry so it would be good publicity to pair you two up for the song.âÂ
âOkay okay! Enough of the build-up because youâre making me anxious. Just tell me who it is already.âÂ
âPromise me that youâll at least meet with him to see if your voices mix. Heâs being told about you too, so think of it as professional courtesy to not reject the pairing outright. I know you want to write for this movie, so you owe it to yourself to at least hear your vocals together.âÂ
âJieun! I canât take this anymore! Who is it?âÂ
ââŚEXOâs Chen.â
