Sketching Chapter 1.8.5 - A Fitting Grave
1. SHE'S HERE! SISTER SIMPLICE TO THE RESCUE!
2. SHE LIED! TWICE! SHE LIED TO SAVE HIM! I'M SORRY I'M VERY EMOTIONAL OVER SISTER SIMPLICE
3. I debated whether to actually comment on the chapter because I'm so tired. But tomorrow comes a very important part of the Bricc that I do Not want to upstage with some Sister Simplice realness. So.
4. Short summary:
a) The town turned their opinions on JVJ immediately except for a couple of people.
b) Valjean's concierge (can't believe I forgot to mention her till now what!) (valjean seems to have a network of women who support him) left out his key for him out of habit. And he showed up, and she covered for him!
c) Valjean sent for Simplice to leave her a note for the curé. It said to use all that was left of his money for charity and for Fantine's burial. Simplice had been beside Fantine. She had been crying. Valjean didn't visit Fantine because he didn't want to "disturb her".
d) Javert showed up in Valjean's house. Javert asked Simplice if she was alone and she said yes. Javert respects authority more than anything so he accepted her word as truth.
e) Valjean left in a dead workman's old coat. Fantine was buried in a common grave so as to spare more for the poor.
5. "The shocks of fate have this peculiarity, that however subdued or disciplined our feelings may be, they draw out the human nature from the depths of our souls and compel it to show it outwardly." I like this quote!
6. I... think Valjean swallowed the key to his courtyard? I mean? That's what VH implied right? I sure hope so cause I'm cracking up here
