I was just good enough to race her distances but just mediocre enough to be bored instead of distressed by it, Ten seconds is the distance between swimmers when half of them don’t have times yet. Ten seconds is what happens when the only person you’re competing with is yourself.     Ten seconds is how long I laugh because I remember watching her turn from good to great, as she made every announcer eat their words. She was not going too fast. She had just started. We were 15. I was screaming at a girl hundreds of miles away. She didn't need to hear me. I cheer anyway.
