Mountain Silversage
Colloquial names: Smudge stick, Haintsbane, Mountain’s crown
Physical Description: Ah, Silversage. This wonderful herb grips along the mountains that border an extreme variety of climates. It can be found in the ranges of the jungles of Un’goro Crater, the glittering snowplains of Winterspring, and even the scorched red rock of Hellfire peninsula. Being an extremophile, the herb needs little aside from sun and altitude to thrive. The hearty variety of Silversage grows low and wide in the mountains, cascading out feathered grey-green or grey-blue branches in a circle from its central root point. Each silvery branch has oval shaped leaves running along long, slender stems. The herb is largely trichromatic in its three shades from tip to tail, and the leaves are remarkably soft to the touch. Its tendency to wreathe along high peaks with spanning silvery branches has earned it the nickname “Mountain’s crown”. Its branches are easily plucked, giving way with a dull, woody snap when gathered.
Described usage: Silversage has had great value to Spiritualists for thousands of years. The leaves, when bound in a bundle with red thread, form an object known as a “smudge stick”. This along with ocean salt are perhaps the two most valuable reagents in cleansing areas of lingering spirits, or speaking for the dead. The bundle is lit and waved around an area or person that spirits cling to. The smoke is thought to guide the restless safely beyond the veil. Being touched by death myself, the smell of Silversage is one of the more recognizable to me. Alchemically speaking, the oil of the fragrant herb can be gathered in a few simple steps. The leaves and stems of the Silversage should be finely crushed, then added to a jar along with an oil such as that of the wild olive. The jar should be tightly capped and left where the sun can touch it for three days. The leaves should then be removed, and the oil run through a sieve. Silversage oil smells warm, minty, and strongly of earth. The scent is unlike any other I am aware of.
Silversage oil is mostly used for matters of the spirit. Its calming effects on its own are used topically to ward against anxiety, curse, and the lingering touch of the spirit realm. When catalyzed with Felweed, it clears the mind in readiness for battle or pressing decision. When combined with the steeped roots of Sansam, it provides healing of the spiritual and emotional nature to the imbiber. In a last and more interesting dilution, the oil can be combined with Icecap tincture to cure concussions and paralyses of fear. It is commonly used to aide in acute bout of panic, as well as cure phobias. Its leaves are pleasant for smoking.
