Sometimes I stretch a little and that goes into crack territory but generally I’m pretty surface level obvious meta not because I can’t go deeper but because I also don’t like it when I see some stuff that’s just way too deep and I struggle to say it’s for sure. I’d rather stick to the obvious stuff because I hate the idea of being wrong in my speculation because I went too deep and saw things that weren’t intentional, I’m all about speculation really, that’s my jam. My meta is a basis for speculation, I’m just an impatient fucker who wants to know what happens next, I never skipped to the end of a book but I do speed read to get there ;) 

My rule is it either has to be 

1. Subtextually blatant AF

2.  CONSISTENT

The stuff I get really excited about is both, because then it’s pretty much 100% gonna be intentional and mean something for the story and where it’s going. Basically I write meta based on canon and subtext is a part of canon but my point re: subtext is establishing canon intent in order to understand where they’re going with it, so it has to be pretty confidently definitely on purpose otherwise it’s not going to go anywhere.

If it’s subtle but consistent it still is also highly likely to be intended by the author, you don’t just get 12 accidents in a season you know? Like… for example the John stuff, after 12x23 I wrote a whole long meta about how the episode had flipped the script to subvert the pilot. Dean was in Sam’s shoes re: Jess/Cas death and also in John’s. Now it wasn’t until 13x02 that I wrote my Dean is John meta because it wasn’t until two episodes later that it was so clearly a consistent theme.

The uneasy peace between their kingdoms has lasted as long as both Dean and Castiel have been alive. Perhaps that is why they get along better than their fathers – although it doesn’t go quite so far as to explain why they started sleeping together.

Dean calls it sexual attraction and is fine with leaving it at that. The rest can remain unspoken. Castiel follows his example, as he does not have the romantic experience that Dean has had. His father is much stricter than King John and wants his children to remain chaste until marriage. He would likely have a heart attack if he could see Castiel now.

They meet in the unnamed woodlands that lie in the neutral zone between their kingdoms. Both have brought hunting parties, consisting of close friends who won’t go looking too far if the princes excuse themselves and disappear for a day or two.

The woods are a poor hunting ground, and neither kingdom really wants to lay a claim to them, but the trees are old and enormous and it is easy to disappear. They meet in the same grove they always do, and Dean has torn Castiel’s cloak off before a greeting even leaves his lips.

They’re quick to divest each other of their clothes, laying their cloaks on the ground, on top of the thick and soft bed of moss.

They never last long the first round – too excited to see each other again after weeks or even months apart – but that’s alright. Castiel almost prefers what comes after, when Dean allows him to hold him in his arms and lies close to him, drawing lazy patterns into the skin of Castiel’s hip with his fingertips.

He hates to have to ruin this.

“Father has been speaking to Anna,” he tells Dean, “of an arranged marriage between her and the eldest of the Winchester children. To strengthen the bonds between our kingdoms.”

Dean’s fingertips slow. “…I know,” he admits. “My father has been telling me the same.”

“She’s not happy about it.”

“What, she doesn’t think I’m good-looking enough or something?”

Castiel attempts a smile but it is half-hearted at best. “She doesn’t know about us but she suspects something. She made some veiled comments to me about not wanting to destroy anyone’s chance at love.”

Dean doesn’t answer. The silence stretches between them, worryingly long, and Castiel considers making some apology on Anna’s behalf. After all, they’ve never defined their relationship by anything as decisive as love. They have sex, and if they hold each other and talk afterwards it is only part of the act.

But Dean speaks again before Castiel has the chance to.

“We’ll figure something out,” he says. “If it even goes through, I’m not sure our fathers can be civil to each other for long enough to reach some sort of agreement. We might not even have to deal with this for another couple of years.”

Castiel can’t help asking. “Do you picture us together then?”

Dean stiffens in his arms and Castiel immediately wants to take it back. He runs a soothing hand down Dean’s arm, heart stilling as the tension slowly leaves Dean’s body.

“I can’t picture us not together,” he finally admits. “I don’t like thinking about the future but when I do, you’re there.”

Castiel’s heart is soaring. He tightens his hold on Dean instinctively, burying his head in Dean’s shoulder to hide his smile. “It’s the same for me.”

“Good,” Dean says, so quiet Castiel almost can’t catch it. “So we’ll figure it out.”

Okay, firstly, thank you so much for sending an ask for this game! Secondly, I’m so sorry it took me a couple of days to answer. Now, down the business...

I honestly wrote the entire fic based on this scene. I was watching some dumb show on TLC and was like oh my god I could go for Dean and Cas slow dancing in a kitchen with the kitchen still being a mess around them. And like, I am wholly convinced that Cas is a clumsy dancer because he’s too busy staring at Dean, and I am also wholly convinced that Dean is as touch-starved as they come, so when he and Cas finally get together he’s just a total cuddle monster!
