The most expensive part of your trip is likely to be your accommodation. If you’re savvy you can get a flight for under 20 Euros, but you can really break the bank when shelling out for somewhere to rest your head. There are more forms of accommodation than there are udders on my prize winning cow, but each place to rest your head comes with its own set of benefits and disadvantages. There are temporary room rentals, villas, Buddhist monasteries, academic housing, house-sitting opportunities, volunteering with free accommodation, house exchanges and campsites, not to mention the humble hotel and hostel. The list is longer than my feudal lord’s codpiece, and there’s no definitive answer as to which one is the best, everything is dependent on what you hope to gain from your travels and how much gold you’re willing to spend. If you’re willing to work there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to find free accommodation, maybe with some food thrown in. However, work away projects and farm-stays tend to be out in the sticks, so if you’re looking for an inner city experience you may have to pay for your keep. If a private room is important to you, it’s worth mentioning that hostels will often have single rooms that you can rent out, often for far cheaper than a conventional hotel. House-stays are a great option too, using sites such as AirBnB to rent a room or a flat for way cheaper than a hotel. Also, they’re great for groups as you can rent out apartments, villas and houses and divide the price between you.  Location is also important. When paying for accommodation it is worth taking into consideration the country, location in regards to a city center and general price of living. As a general rule, eastern Europe is cheaper than western Europe, to the extent that one can find a decent hotel for 6 Euros in cities such as Sophia, whereas they may have to pay hand over turnip for an equivalent in Milan. If you’re a true vagabond it is worth considering paying a little more to get to cheaper countries. I’ll go into the details of different types of accommodation in later posts and make some guides as to how to find the best deals, but for now I hope this has given you some food for thought! Only you know your priorities, so it’s worth mulling over what kind of experience you’re hoping to have. Stay meagre peasants!
