Tristan sat on the floor beside his older brother's bed and rocked slightly, his arms locked around his knees. He had slammed around earlier, shouted, tried desperately to get someone to help where he knew he was hopelessly inadequate, but in the end it would always be just the two of them.
His hands were shaking. He had them balled up into fists and pressed hard against his legs but they wouldn't stop. So much for trying to make Siegfried comfortable. Tristan had tried simply to smooth over the covers, but he couldn't quit the shaking, and it had been a failure.
He needed a cigarette badly. But he didn't dare smoke in here. Not this time. Hell, he needed a good drink even more, but not that either. He could get drunk later. He would get drunk later.
Siegfried's silence, his faded demeanor, so different from the Siegfried he had always known, scared him. It felt wrong. Like it was wrong to be here, and any second there would be a distant "TRISTAAAAAAAAAN!"
Tris got up on his knees and leaned on the bedside, not looking so well himself. Siegfried had always been there. For ever. He didn't know what he would do or be without him.
"Brother-- " he tried to begin, but his voice cracked. "Sie-- Siegfried-- you've got to pull through this, alright?" Tristan's voice was very high, and he stammered and squeaked his words terribly. "Of the t-two of us you would be the one to pull through." He paused and sucked in his breath. "I-I was always a t-terrible sod," he blurted out bitterly. He broke up then and took his older brother's hand, burying his face into the covers, and clutching the fabrics.
