oh TASTE! it's one of my favourites too! okay, here's my thinking (which has been limited so far, I'll be honest):

goes without saying that this au is for Sereshaw. honestly, it could work as a full au where they were never in the Navy OR they're still in the Navy, and currently I'm leaning towards door number two. maybe they went through the Academy together and developed feelings but never tried anything, and both of them were oblivious to the others feelings. of course in this circumstance it has the added layer of them being two men in the Navy who don't want to tank their entire career by making the Wrong Move.

enter character C. she's spunky, she's cute, she's a friend of Jake's (from either the Academy also, or he's known her forever) and, at a drunken night at the bar before they graduate, she asks Jake if he's gonna ask Bradley out in front of Bradley, and Jake's denial is knee-jerk and instinctual. for Bradley, it's a confirmation of his worst fear - Jake doesn't see him that way. then character C thinks great! and asks Bradley out. he sees no reason to say no, and bingo bango, suddenly Jake's best friends are dating and he's out on the periphery and then they're ENGAGED and at the bacherlotte party one thing leads to another and being with Bradley is even better than he thought it would be but Jake hates cheaters and he sure as hell hates homewreckers but he's loved Bradley for so long he doesn't know how not to.

of all the au ideas I'm entertaining, this au is the one that would most closely follow the plot of the source material while still (trying!) staying true to the characters... will I ever write it? who knows! but for the moment it's on the list.

Gender: Cisgender boy

General Appearance: He takes after Abby meaning he has black hair, dark brown eyes, rounded cheeks. His hair curls like Bob's, though, and he's tall.

Personality: Isaac is his father's son. Quiet and unassuming, but smart, observant, and detail oriented at the same time.

Special Talents: He's incredible at anticipating other people's needs, and his ability to read people is slightly discerning when you first meet him.

Who they like better: It's fairly even, but he spends most of his time with Abby, so it's probably her.

Who they take after more: Like I said, he's his father's son.

Personal Head canon: He wants to be a mechanical engineer like his (not biological) aunt Kennedy, who's an aircraft mechanic. She taught him everything he knows.

Jake’s wickedly funny, as smart as a whip, and a fucking asshole. He’s sarcastic, and coy, and hotter than he has any right to be. It’s hard to say if it’s better or worse that Jake knows it, too. The things he doesn’t know about himself are why Bradley can’t help but love him: he may not always be nice, but he’s so profoundly good.

WHEN I tell you I had to PUT MY PHONE DOWN and WALK AWAY for a little while when I read that !!!!!!!!! It's just so. SO. 🤌🏽

Jake’s breath catches in his throat; it feels like being struck by lightning and he hates it, hates that Bradley makes him feel this way: excitement that curdles in his gut as quickly as it forms because it’s over, and he doesn’t get to feel like this about Bradley anymore.

2. their first flight together, THEIR FIRST FLIGHT TOGETHER.

Jake’s got no idea who gets tone first but he doesn’t even care, because he’s got Bradley’s laughter overshadowing Bull’s swearing in his ears and the best job in the world.

3. the scene outside of jake’s, after his run

Bradley should go because if he doesn’t Jake’s gonna take it back. Bradley nods but doesn’t move, hands clenched into fists at his sides. “And Bradley?” Bradley’s brown eyes meet his own, his gaze unwavering. “Don’t text me.”

Seriously, though, I think my strong suit (and my go-to) is strangers-friends-lovers trope. Mutual pining is a favorite, too. Unresolved sexual tension is a newer favorite.
