Hoseok is woken by the morning sunlight hitting his face. He's typically a morning person who rises with the sun, a strong believer of getting enough vitamin D to start the day.
Today, he grunts and rolls back over, wrapping himself up tightly in his blanket. He doesn't particularly feel like moving today, and since it was their day off, he thinks he deserves the sleep in.
But it feels like he's barely closed his eyes again before his door opens, and Taehyung pops his head in.
“Oh, hyung!” The younger says, sounding surprised. “I didn't expect you to still be sleeping. Jin hyung made pancakes! Come down for breakfast? Everyone's downstairs already.”
He wants to stay asleep, honestly, but it's rare that they have time to enjoy a day off together and Hoseok doesn't want to worry anyone if he doesn't show. He drags the blanket down from over his head and smiles at his dongsaeng. “Sure, Tae bear. Just give me five minutes.”
“Okay!” His door slams close again, making him jump, but he still smiles fondly to himself at the sound of Taehyung’s feet stomping excitedly down the stairs.
Dragging himself out of bed was a difficult task all on its own. Leaving the confines of his blanket and exposing himself to the slight chill in the room instantly makes him shiver, and he contemplates lying to Taehyung and just going straight back to bed. But the more rational part of him argues that he shouldn't disappoint his dongsaeng - a shower could fix it, or at least wake him up more, he hopes; he grabs a towel and heads to the bathroom.
He's so groggy that his head feels floaty and weird while making the short walk to the bathroom, and he's shivering even more by the time he gets there. He recoils a little in shock when he catches sight of himself in the mirror - they all stayed up late last night, sure, but was he that sleep deprived to have such prominent dark circles around his eyes? He’ll take another nap after breakfast, he supposes. Shaking his head, Hoseok steps into the shower and turns on the water, cranking the heat to as high up as he could stand. He leans against the shower wall and tilts his face up against the spray, sighing pleasantly as the hot water sluices over him. He can't shake the chill that's been lingering on his skin since he woke up - and, despite feeling himself literally sweating from the heat in the bathroom, he still feels weirdly cold on the inside.
Still with his back against the wall, Hoseok slides slowly to the floor, wrapping his arms around his knees. He's dizzy and kind of sleepy and the water feels nice and warm against his skin, battling off the cold he's been feeling since morning. He promised Taehyung five minutes, didn't he? He's sure they'll forgive him if he took ten, instead.
He falls unconscious between one blink and the next, far too quickly to register that anything was wrong.
~~~~
Hoseok jolts awake to the sound of loud banging on his door.
“Hobi!” Namjoon yells through the door. “Are you in there? It's been almost half an hour!” When Hoseok takes a beat too long to answer, Namjoon adds, “if you don't answer me in the next 30 seconds, I'm breaking down the door!”
“I'm fine!” Hoseok calls back, alarmed. “I'll be out soon!” Vertigo makes the bathroom walls around him spin when he lifts his head, and he drops it quickly back down between his knees with a soft whimper. Belatedly, he realises the water has run cold, his body starting to shiver of its own accord. He reaches up blindly to turn off the shower, before Namjoon's words register - crap, he doesn't even remember falling asleep; has he been in here for that long already?
“We're done with breakfast - Jin hyung wrapped up some of the pancakes and left them for you in the kitchen. Some of us are going out shopping, do you want us to wait for you?”
“Uh - no, no.” Hoseok stammers. “I'm good, Joonie, thank you.”
Namjoon knocks on the door once as acknowledgement - and in the silence that follows, Hoseok assumes that Namjoon has finally left.
But then he hears a smaller, softer knock, and Namjoon's voice again.
“Hobi? You'd tell us if you weren't feeling alright, wouldn't you? It's just… Tae said you woke up half an hour ago, but you usually don't take that long to come out. We got a little worried.”
“I'm fine, Joon. Really. Don't worry about me.” Hoseok answers, keeping his voice as steady as he can. He hopes the reassurance is enough to appease the younger. The shock of getting woken up was wearing off - but not the dizziness currently making his head spin. He wants to sit here until his head stops spinning, but he doesn't want Namjoon to worry and wait for him until he comes out.
There's a long pause before Namjoon finally says, “Okay, then we'll be heading out first. Jungkook's staying home, so you'll still have some company.”
Hoseok allows himself a small smile at that. As expected of their introverted maknae.
Namjoon finally leaves, and Hoseok keeps his head down between his knees and closes his eyes, waiting for the dizziness to pass. Eventually, he feels well enough - not dizzy, but still lightheaded - to climb to his feet, still shivering, towelling himself off and pulling on dry clothes before emerging from the bathroom.
Towel draped around his neck, he moves towards the kitchen - Jin hyung had left pancakes out for him, hadn't he?
The eldest had also left a glass of cold orange juice out beside the pancakes. Condensation drips down the sides of the glass like a sparkling bead curtain, and Hoseok finds himself transfixed by the glittering droplets. He sits down absentmindedly at the dining table, gaze still caught on the condensation at the sides of the glass. How had he never noticed how fascinating it was? He feels like he could stare at the glass forever…
~~~~
Jungkook walks into the kitchen to find his hyung seated at the dining table, staring fixedly at the glass of now lukewarm orange juice. As Jungkook watches, Hoseok breathes lightly on the glass, gaze intense on the condensation that pools together and runs down the side. The dancer doesn't blink even once through the entire process.
Ooookay. That wasn't concerning in the slightest.
Jungkook approaches him carefully - alarm bells go off in his head when Hoseok doesn’t even react to his presence.
“Um… Hyung. Hyung?” When Hoseok doesn’t respond, Jungkook reaches out to grasp his shoulder; the dancer startles, swivelling around in his chair to face him with wide eyes. Even then, it seems to take the dancer a second to focus before his gaze centres on Jungkook's face. “Kook?”
“Hyung, what are you doing? With how hard you were staring at the juice, I thought for sure you could see the lyrics to Cypher Pt. 5 in there.” Another spike of concern goes through him when Hoseok doesn't laugh at the joke, but only blinks confusedly in response.
“Oh,” Hoseok breathes instead. “Condensation.”
“Condensation?” Jungkook's brow furrows, both in confusion and concern.
Hoseok gestures excitedly at the glass - nearly toppling off the bar stool he's seated on in the process, but Jungkook quickly catches him and rights him again. That was more concerning than anything else he's seen today, given how coordinated his dancer hyung usually is. “Condensation!” Hoseok says, unfazed. “Isn't it pretty?”
“Uh - sure, hyung.” Hoseok beams at him and turns back to staring at the glass, and now Jungkook is starting to get really worried. He'd felt the unnatural heat coming off the other's skin when he'd caught him, and this seemed far worse than what Namjoon hyung had warned him about when he said Hoseokie hyung sounded “a little off” today.
If it's just a fever, though, Jungkook's confident he can handle it, once he's gotten Hoseok to take some medicine first. He eyes the plate of untouched pancakes on the kitchen counter, still cling-wrapped, and gently nudges it in Hoseok's direction. “Hyung, you should eat.” Jungkook cajoles, holding out a fork to him, “You need to have something before taking your medicine.”
“Medicine? For who? Who's sick?” Hoseok asks, confused, and Jungkook just shakes his head with a fond smile. “Nothing, hyung. Eat your pancakes, please? Jin hyung made them.” He's distinctly aware that he's adopted the same tone he uses when talking to his 4 year old niece, but - if it's working, he's not complaining, and Hoseok certainly isn't in the right mind to either.
Hoseok's gaze drops down to the fork Jungkook's holding out, and pouts. “Feed me?”
“Feed… What?” Jungkook blinks, not sure if he's heard wrong. For all that his hyung loves skinship with the members, he's never made such a request from them before.
Hoseok pouts further. “Feed me.” He repeats. His eyes flicker away from the fork, back to the dripping glass of orange juice. “I can't watch the condensation if I eat. It's too distracting.” Jungkook presses his lips together in an effort not to laugh. God, how was his hyung so cute when he was a good 3 years older than him? “Sure, hyung, you can watch the condensation while I feed you.” Jungkook grins, spearing a piece of pancake and holding it up to his hyung's lips. “Open up.”
The dancer opens his mouth obligingly for the pancake and chews without shifting his gaze away once from the juice, cheeks bulging just like his squirrel namesake. Jungkook feels another burst of fondness - and starts surreptitiously filming him with his phone as he feeds Hoseok the pancakes. Not that he had to be subtle about it, since his hyung doesn't even notice; too occupied with his current activity of watching condensation run down the glass. He also doesn't notice when the pancakes are all gone and Jungkook disappears to quickly grab fever reducers from the kitchen cabinet, only turning to him with a small, confused smile when Jungkook sits back beside him and nudges his arm.
“Oh, Kookie, you're here.” Hoseok greets softly. He's looking more tired now, strained around the eyes and the flush even more prominent on his cheeks. “Have you ever noticed how pretty condensation is?”
He is not going to panic. Hobi hyung's just sick, Jungkook reminds himself firmly. “Hyung, can you take these?” He asks urgently, shaking out two pills into Hoseok's hand. When the dancer only blinks blankly at the pills, Jungkook adds, “you can take them with the orange juice, if you want…?”
Abruptly, Hoseok looks like he might cry. “But the condensation will disappear,” he says in a tremulous voice, “I don't want to make it go away.”
Forget panicking, because if he sees his sunshine hyung cry, he knows it will positively break him. “No, it's okay, you don't have to drink the orange juice!” Jungkook yelps. He scrambles back to the kitchen to fill a glass with water, before bringing it back to the table, along with the thermometer he remembered to grab in a moment of inspiration. “Take the pills with this, hyung. You can keep looking at the orange juice all you like.” He nudges Hoseok's palm towards his mouth when the dancer makes no move to eat the pills - thankfully, that action spurs his hyung to finally take the medicine on autopilot, in a way that tells Jungkook that he's not fully conscious of what he's doing. Then, his attention returns again to the glass of orange juice.
Jungkook watches Hoseok watch the condensation; it is worrying, the way Hoseok blinks slow and dazed, the glassy look in his eyes a clear sign that he's not entirely there, and maybe - maybe Jungkook had been a little overconfident in thinking that he could handle this alone.
“Hyung,” Jungkook starts tentatively, only continuing once Hoseok has turned his hazy gaze towards him. “Should we go to the clinic…? I can drive you.”
Hoseok stares at him for nearly a full minute. Then, wordlessly and with a grace that had been missing earlier, he slides smoothly off the bar stool and makes his way towards the front door - only pausing to grab the TV remote from the living room, for some indiscernible reason.
“Wha- hyung! Where are you going?” Jungkook calls, scrambling off his own stool in a panic to follow after him. Hoseok doesn't seem to hear him, striding confidently without pause to the parking lot right outside… Where he holds the TV remote towards the car and presses the power button repeatedly. Jungkook skids to a stop beside him, a little in disbelief.
“Don't worry about it. Hyung can drive.” Hoseok mumbles absently. He's jabbing repeatedly at the TV remote, looking clearly frustrated at how the car isn't unlocking. Jungkook winces at each vicious stab of the TV remote, vividly imagining their TV inside turning on and off in bursts of static, and hoping that Jin hyung will find the electricity bill this month funny after he's gotten over the anger and worry from the delirious dancer's actions.
And speaking of finding this funny… Despite his growing concern, there's no way Jungkook is missing the opportunity to get this on video.
“Hyung, what are you doing?” Jungkook asks, grinning cheekily, phone out and camera turned towards his hyung.
“Driving you.” Hoseok answers blithely. He clearly doesn't notice the camera at all. A little frown marrs his features, as he continues to press irritably on the TV remote. “As soon as I can get this stupid car to unlock…”
Jungkook giggles. “And what are you unlocking the car with, hyung?”
“The keys, obviously!” Comes the frustrated reply. “Why are you even asking… Oh.” Hoseok’s gaze finally zeroes in on the TV remote in his hand. Without any warning, he drops the remote with a clatter, uncaring of where it lands, and starts walking towards the back of the house, where Jungkook knows the actual car keys are kept in a bowl on a cabinet beside the door.
Oh, hell no. Jin hyung would kill him if he actually let Hobi hyung drive in this state.
Ending the video in a panic, Jungkook quickly grabs Hoseok by the wrist, tugging him back around into a hug. This close, heat practically radiates off his hyung, and Jungkook fervently prays for the fever reducers he gave Hoseok earlier to kick in as soon as possible.
“Jungkookie…? What are you doing?” Hoseok squirms a little in Jungkook’s hold. “Let go of me, hyung has to get the car keys to drive you.”
With Hoseok’s current insistence on driving (and Jungkook is pretty sure he doesn’t even know where he wants to go), Jungkook’s not too certain that he can keep his delirious hyung from putting his hands on the wheel if they were to drive to the clinic right now.
“I changed my mind, hyung.” Jungkook says. “Can we take a nap instead?”
When Hoseok looks ready to argue, Jungkook pulls out the big guns. “Hyung, I'm really tired.” Jungkook looks up at Hoseok with his best puppy eyes. “Can we nap? Please?”
As expected, Hoseok's entire posture immediately softens, one hand coming up to pet Jungkook's hair. “Yeah, of course we can, Kookie.”
He lets Jungkook take his hand and lead him back towards the house, but not before adding, “hyung can still drive you later if you want.” Jungkook laughs.
“Sure, hyung.”
~~~~~
Hours later, Jungkook is woken up by someone roughly shoving at his shoulder. “Kookie. Kookie, get up quick.” Someone whispers frantically. It takes him a minute to place the voice as Jin hyung's, and the slight panic in it is enough to wake him fully, as Jungkook's eyes snap open. The eldest is standing over him, one hand on his shoulder, while Namjoon tries to pry Hoseok out of Jungkook's vice-like grip.
“Hyung?” Jungkook says, his tongue still feeling too thick and sleep-heavy to form syllables. Then he abruptly realises that his dancer hyung's limp body feels blisteringly hot against his, face flushed and sweaty, and is entirely unresponsive to Namjoon's rough tugging. Jungkook's heart leaps into his throat. “H-Hobi hyung?”
“He needs a cold bath.” Seokjin answers. “Sejin hyung is on his way over - he's bringing Hoseok-ah to the hospital once he's here.”
“Hospital? Why does he need - did I -” Jungkook stumbles over his words as he struggles to make sense of the situation, panic rising as he watches Namjoon bundle up Hoseok's dead weight and carry him to the bathroom.
“You didn't do anything wrong, baby.” Seokjin quickly soothes, carding his hand once through Jungkook's hair. “His fever spiked while you both were asleep. We came home early to check on you guys and found him like this, so we called Sejin hyung for help.”
Guilt eats at him anyway - how had he not woken up when Hobi hyung’s condition took a turn for the worse? - but Seokjin leaves him no time to argue as he grabs clothes and a towel and strides quickly out of the bedroom, leaving Jungkook to stumble after him in a worried haze.
They reach the bathroom to find Namjoon and Yoongi helping Hoseok to remove his clothes, while Taehyung and Jimin hover worriedly at the door. The dancer's eyes are open into slits as he rests his head tiredly against Yoongi's shoulder, but it's clear from the glassy look in them that he's still not fully lucid.
Namjoon makes his way over to them when he spots Seokjin. “I filled the tub with cold water, not freezing, like you asked.” The leader murmurs quietly, then shakes his head. “Seok is going to hate this.”
“I know. We'll try to keep him in the bath for as short a time as possible. Just until we can get his temperature down a little.” Seokjin's lips are pinched in a thin line.
Expression grim, Namjoon goes to pick Hoseok up again - the dancer's head falls limply against his shoulder, a soft whimper escaping his throat. “Shh, you're fine.” Namjoon presses a light kiss into his hair. “We're just giving you a quick bath, okay?” Seokjin moves to kneel beside the tub, a washcloth in hand, just as Namjoon slowly lowers Hoseok into the water.
“NO!” Jungkook flinches when Hoseok suddenly screams, seemingly lucid again, and flails violently to get out of Namjoon's hold. Namjoon and Seokjin both move quickly to hold him down; Hoseok struggles against them for a few more seconds before his burst of adrenaline deserts him, and falls limp against them. He's trembling lightly, fingers weakly grasping at Seokjin's sleeve as he whimpers, “Cold… P-please, hyung, it's cold.”
“It's just for a while, baby.” Seokjin soothes, desperate, only the slight shake in his voice betraying the heartbreak he feels, as he wets the washcloth in the water and runs it gently across Hoseok's back. He hates seeing his members in distress, and Hoseok being in this state has him close to breaking his composure. “We just need to get your fever down. Bear with it for me, sweetheart.”
Hoseok whimpers another time, but falls silent, body continuing to tremble violently while Seokjin and Namjoon run cool washcloths over him.
Jungkook is still standing at the doorway, frozen - not that his fellow maknaes were doing any better, Taehyung and Jimin both meeting his gaze with identical expressions of worry. It wasn't often that their members fell ill like this, and Seokjin’s earlier mention of “hospital” have them all scared for their hyung.
“He'll be okay.” The three startle, glancing towards Yoongi, who had walked up beside them unnoticed. The second oldest regards their worried expressions with a fond smile, and adds, “We've been through worse, haven't we? Don't worry yourselves too much.” His phone chimes with a message just then, Yoongi glancing down to check the screen. “Sejin hyung just got here. Will you three head down to let him in?”
Downstairs, Jungkook, Taehyung and Jimin open the door to a frazzled-looking Sejin. When he sees them, he scrubs a hand through his uncombed hair and schools his concerned expression into a slightly strained smile. “How is Hoseok?”
“He… seems pretty sick,” Jimin answers, worrying his lip between his teeth, the three of them stepping back to let their manager in.
When they head back upstairs to the bathroom, Jungkook is relieved to see that Hobi hyung was more alert now, blinking tiredly as he sits upright in the bath, knees drawn up to his chest. He's shivering less, face less flushed than before. Sejin waits respectfully outside with his back to the door, giving them time to get Hoseok dressed.
“His fever's down, but not by much.” Seokjin calls out when he sees them. “38.9 degrees. A visit to the hospital will still do him good, I think.” Hoseok remains completely silent, Jungkook notes with worry.
Seokjin notices - of course he notices, attuned as he always is to his member's moods no matter the situation - and shoots Jungkook a reassuring smile. “Don't worry, Kook-ah. Hobi's just exhausted from the fever, poor thing.” He runs a gentle hand through Hoseok's hair, and the dancer leans into his palm, sighing softly. “He'll be right as rain once Sejin hyung takes him to the hospital.”
And the thing is - Jungkook's way past the age where simple words were enough to convince him that everything would be fine, yet Seokjin's words still manage to ease some of the panic eating at him.
Jungkook steps forward to help Hoseok out of the bathtub; with one of his hyung's arms around his shoulders, Jungkook almost carries Hoseok's entire weight as he helps him stumble out on shaky legs and onto the closed toilet seat, where Seokjin dries him quickly with a towel, and Taehyung and Jimin - eager to make themselves helpful - ease him gently into a t-shirt and sweatpants.
“Thank you.” Hoseok mumbles in a cracked whisper, voice thin.
Seokjin pauses his drying of Hoseok’s hair to give him a kiss on the cheek. “You never need to thank us, baby. We'll always take care of you.”
~~~~
One day later
“You're kidding.” Hoseok croaks from his hospital bed.
“Nope!” Jungkook chirps, gleefully. “Look, hyung, I have video evidence and everything.” His phone screen is paused on a scene of Hoseok mid-stride towards the house, the TV remote just visible on the ground in one corner of the screen, the video blurry from Jungkook ending the video mid-run to stop his hyung from getting to the actual car keys.
“But - the TV remote?” Hoseok says, aghast. “I don't even remember doing that!”
“Well… You were pretty out of it.” Jungkook bites his bottom lip, expression growing slightly sombre as he recalls yesterday's events. “It was really scary, hyung. It's like you were talking to yourself most of the time.”
Hoseok glances to his left when the hand draped loosely around his wrist tightens; Yoongi meets his gaze, expression equally serious.
The members are gathered around him in various positions around the room; Jungkook is on a chair beside his bed, Yoongi is squeezed into the other half of the bed beside Hoseok, Jimin and Taehyung are asleep on the sofa at the side of the room. Two other chairs facing the bed are vacant, Seokjin and Namjoon having recently left the room to get drinks for the rest.
“You scared all of us, not just Jungkookie.” The older rapper says, soft and grave.
“Sorry, hyung.” Hoseok whispers back, guilt feeling thick on his tongue when he swallows. His gaze cuts back to Jungkook, now worrying his lip ring between his teeth. “And I'm sorry, Kookie. You shouldn't have had to see that.”
“Shouldn't have to see what?” Jin nudges the door open with his shoulder, two cups of hot coffee in his hands, Namjoon just behind him holding the same. Jungkook quickly stands to hold the door open for them, Seokjin giving him a kiss on the cheek in thanks as he hands him one cup.
“Seok-ah being delirious and silly while his brain was getting cooked by the fever.” Yoongi answers. Seokjin looks over in time to catch the guilty expression on Hoseok's face. He hands the other cup of coffee to Yoongi, who scoots up enough on the bed that Seokjin can lean over and pepper kisses all over his dongsaeng's face, smiling when Hoseok finally giggles, tickled by the butterfly kisses.
“Don't worry, Yoongi-ah. I'm sure this experience has taught Hobi to be more honest with us, at the very least to avoid more embarrassing videos making their way into Kook's b-roll.” Behind Seokjin, Jungkook makes a peace sign at Hoseok, grinning impishly. The subtle warning in the eldest's words was not lost on him, however, and Hoseok gives Seokjin a nervous smile.
“You will tell us the minute you feel unwell in the future, won't you baby? No more hiding things from us?” Seokjin presses - but his attention is pulled away when Jungkook makes a funny-sounding snort. “Kook..?”
“Nothing, nothing - it's just, I know how to tell when Hobi hyung has a fever now.” Jungkook says, lips twitching, clearly fighting laughter. Hoseok and Seokjin turn quizzical gazes onto the maknae.
A mischievous grin spreads across Jungkook's face. “Just ask him how he feels about condensation.”
