ruby: favourite pre-2000 song? - There are Too Many Songs, so I chose one from 1999 to compensate and that's Muscle Museum by Muse, what a fave. [This is an acoustic performance by them in a music shop in 1999, and it also made me realise they went on tour with Skunk Anansie?! I Did Not Know That.]

carnelian: at what point did your life change without you realising? - Well, I think the last three (?) years of high school was where it all changed to be fair. The last touch of puberty, the realisation that, Hm, actually I don't like boys, or girls, wtf am I? And the perennial thought that Hm again, maybe i dont want to be a teacher when I grow up, but if I don't wanna do that, whatever will I be? Also there was a financial crisis those days, money would have solved some of my problems sooner tbh.

crimson: if you could have only one photo or poster on your wall, what would it be? - That's easy, I made it custom made last year. It's a photoshop of my brother's face on the Monna Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci. You might or might not know this, but my brother is not with us anymore, so I decided to remember him as the big brother he's been to me. I'm quite happy about the quality of the photoshop as well, I have to say. He saw it when I first made it and he laughed, so I think he'd appreciate the thought now. ☺️

Currently reading: I'm reading a collection of Ibsen plays, The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett, and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo.

Last Movie: My Fake Fiancé with Melissa Joan Hart, no idea why. The idea was theoretically cute, but it wasn't executed in a way I actually enjoyed, oh well.

Last Series: I think "Startruck" with Rose Matafeo, even though technically it was a rewatch of "Taskmaster" (with Rose Matafeo) (lol)

Sweet, Savory, or Spicy: Sometimes sweet (many times sweet), but I do appreciate a lot of savory foods.

Craving: A fresh breeze.

Currently watching: I started watching “The Durrells” some time ago and I’m enjoying it!

Currently reading: A collection of plays by Ibsen, and the autobiography of Enrichetta Caracciolo, which I discovered reading a collection of Italian women biographies.

On my birthday itself, the best part was spending time with my husband and parents, who made me a dinner with oysters, prime rib, Yorkshire pudding, a bunch of other goodies, and Frangelico cake. I also loved all the calls and messages, and participating in a writer’s workshop in the morning that woke up my creativity.

Today (the day after my actual birthday), I had one of the best afternoons ever, and certainly of this year. Every year for the past several on my birthday, I’ve had an annual dim sum brunch blowout. To me, dim sum is the perfect genre of food (when we first watched DS9, spouse and I would go out for dim sum earlier in the day and order nine dishes of dim sum before coming home to watch, and we’d call it a D(im)S(um)9 Day). Usually I get a large group of friends to go out to a restaurant with me, but not this year, obviously. 

So I held a virtual dim sum brunch (BYODS), and, to my delight, more than 50 of my friends showed up to it. Almost everyone had sourced local dim sum, or at least thawed frozen potstickers, or was making their own. I had friends there who I’d met in elementary school, to friends I’d made in the past few years. There were people there from California to Scotland. We managed to keep the party going for five hours, which is crazy considering how draining Zoom meetings usually are. But this was just great. We talked about everything under the sun, almost nobody talked over each other, and it was just wonderful. They even managed to sing Happy Birthday with surprisingly minimal latency.

Like most of us, I’ve felt very isolated this year. But I’m reminded of how incredibly fortunate I am, how great my friends are, and what a lovely life I’ve led so far.
