Camp fam headcannons: Religion edition
Darius: attends church on Christmas and Easter. He goes to a little church his family has been apart of for a long time. His dad was very active in it, so even though he doesn't attend much the members still adore him. His mom goes every Sunday still, and sometimes he'll join her but that's rare. It's a very inclusive and loving space.
Kenji: Was never religious at all because his father wasn't involved with religion. His mom had been Catholic and had asked Daniel to introduce Kenji to the religion when he grew older and let him decide if he wanted to practice Catholicism, but Daniel didn't deem it important enough to follow through after she died (fuck you daniel). Kenji went to Church every once and awhile with Darius and his mom, but him and Brandon usually slept in too late to make it to service. He doesn't really care about labels. He just isn't religious and that's what he tells people when they ask.
Brooklynn: Her dad Ash is from Tennessee and grew up in a strict Baptist family. He cut ties with his family and deconstructed from his faith, but later began going to an Episcopalian church with his boyfriend (now husband), and found peace with religion. Even though Brooklynn's dad Trevor is technically Episcopalian, he's also very spiritual. Brooklynn is very fluid about religion. She doesn't affiliate herself with a certain religion, but she does believe in a God of some sort and goes to church during Christmas. She's also pretty spiritual like her dad Trevor.
Ben: Jewish. It just makes sense. His mom is super involved but his dad is more laid back. He grew up attending Shabbat services every Saturday and his mom tried to get him involved with the youth groups but he wasn't interested. Now he just attends services with his parents for the important holidays.
Yaz: Never has been religious and grew up considering herself an Atheist, but when she got older she began leaning more towards an Agnostic worldview. The first time she attended a church service with Sammy during a Christmas they spent together, Yaz was flabbergasted by like...everything going on. It was hilarious.
Sammy: Grew up in a small Catholic Church with lots of judgmental and closed minded people. Before Nublar, even though many if the church members said harmful things and she felt unwelcome despite not being out at the time, she still participated. She really did love going to Mass, and her favorite Sunday's were the one's where she got to help out with the cooking for the post-service breakfast. Post Nublar, sadly the Church members and congregation were openly unaccepting and she ended up almost deconstructing from Catholicism. Eventually, with the help of her older sister, she discovered a youth group for lgbtq+ Christians who were looking to connect with their religion in an affirming and safe space. She stopped going to church but started practicing her religion again once she realized there were Christians who did love and accept her as she was.
(When her and Yaz get married and have kids they find a welcoming and inclusive church and actually become very active church members. Yaz doesn't convert but she does support her wife and is very enthusiastic about getting their daughters involved in church and eventually youth groups.)
Yaz and Sammy also baptize both their daughters when they're babies and it's a whole thing. Yaz' mom and Sammy's sister attend, Camp fam attends, the woman Sammy met at mommy and me yoga attends, and the farrier for their horses attends. Sammy's crying, Yaz is just happy to experience the moment with her wife and daughter(s), Ben is really fucking confused even though he's the godfather, Kenji is trying not to laugh at how ridiculous the baby looks in the long ass dress, Brooklynn's taking pictures, and Darius is the only one who's used to baptism's besides Sammy.
When the girl's get older Sammy and Yaz sit them down and talk to them about how religion is a personal choice and they will support them if they want to pursue a different faith or if they don't want to be religious at all.
