Les Darcy, world welter-weight boxing champion fled Australia secretly on 27 October 1916, one day before the conscription referendum, to avoid being called up for military service. All men between the ages of 21 - 35, unless exempted, were called up for home defence.
Darcy, of Irish Catholic parents, was radicalised to oppose Britain and Australia’s war effort especially following the Irish Revolt.
In America, however, he was recognised as a shirker and forbidden to box professionally. Despite his efforts he succumbed to pneumonia and died in May 1917.
