A dramatic collision occurred Saturday night when the Mexican navy’s sail training ship Cuauhtémoc lost power and slammed into the Brooklyn Bridge. The Two Ships That Collided at The Strait of Gibraltar 12 Days Ago Have Departed Algeciras
On 03 December 2024 container ship HMM ST PETERSBURG and oil tanker ship GLORIA MARIS, collided in The Strait of Gibraltar. These massive ships required the assistance from the Spanish Coast Guard which deployed in the early morning hours. Both ships proceeded to The Port of Algeciras, Spain, approximately 8–9 miles northwest of the incident. HMM ST PETERSBURG was loaded with containers. It was docked at Algeciras APM Terminals, where as GLORIA MARIS, was anchored in front of the port at Algeciras Anchorage Area A.
HMM ST PETERSBURG was seen leaving the Port of Algeciras and entering The Strait of Gibraltar on 15 December, 2024, 12 days after the collision. The ships were required by Spanish Authorities to undergo investigations as to the cause of the crash and to determine sea worthiness. HMM ST PETERSBURG departed to Rotterdam. GLORIA MARIS departed Algeciras on 14 December to Cartegena, Spain. The accident did not cause any major pollutants to the environment in The Strait of Gibraltar. This was a major concern for authorities. Often times with ship crashes oils, fuel, and hydraulic fluids can leak out wrecking havoc on the local sea environment. As a ship enthusiast at The Strait of Gibraltar, this was important to me as well. 12 days after the ship collision both ships have now departed from Algeciras, Spain.
