A certain someone keeps weighing on Robert’s mind, much to his chagrin.

It’s on their way to the register that something else catches his eye. A dish set adorned with blue jays in flight, meticulously detailed. They’re no falcons, but something about their vivacious presence reminds him of a certain someone. Someone he’s not supposed to be thinking about, but his eyes still linger for several moments too long before he turns away with a huff.

“Looking at a gift?” Shioh asks.

“A gift for a partner?” asks Gomar.

“You’ve found a special someone?!” both cry with shining eyes.

Robert sputters. “He’s not my—” And now he’s just confirmed he was thinking of someone. Wonderful. “It reminded me of a friend. That’s all.”

“Friends are precious,” says Gomar.

“Partners are precious,” Shioh chimes in.

“You should get it! He’ll be happy to know you thought of him!”

Oh, he’d be happy, alright. Falcon would be downright smug to know he’s occupying Robert’s thoughts even when he’s not around to be obnoxious in person. It isn’t exactly inspiring Robert to pick up the gift. It also doesn’t escape his notice that there’s two of each dish in the set, which won’t do anything to dispel Gomar and Shioh’s delusions. 

…The bowls would make nice replacements for the one he chipped, though. Even if that had been partially Falcon’s fault. But Falcon wouldn’t have been spurred to warp food over in the first place if Robert hadn’t been so flagrantly uncouth. Is it not his duty as a guest to make up for it?

Gomar and Shioh cheer as Robert picks up the dish set with a heavy sigh. They pepper him with questions all the way to the checkout stations, delighted (and nosy) about his supposed ‘partner’. Nothing he says seems to dissuade them—in fact, his protesting only seems to convince them that Robert is simply shy, which he’s never been in his life. How utterly absurd.

“Do you do everything together?” asks Gomar.

“Do you trust him with everything?” asks Shioh.

“Will we ever get to meet him?!”

“No to the first two,” Robert huffs. “I came here alone, didn’t I? And I wouldn’t trust him to find his way out of a wet paper bag. As for your third request, you’ve already met—” Oops. “Well. That is…”

Gomar and Shioh’s eyes, if possible, shine even more at his slip-up, practically sparkling in the store’s artificial light.

“Someone we know? A pilot?”

“A fellow racer! How exciting!”

Robert pinches the bridge of his nose. “An insufferable one. Just like you two, my dears.”

“A best friend you love despite their flaws,” says Shioh, completely ignoring him.

“A partner you can share your deepest passions with,” says Gomar, also ignoring him.
