There is one line of dialogue in Veilguard that i think is incredibly well done and it's Shathann's comment about how it's unusual for her daughter to be interested in men. It always kind of feels like she's casually misgendering Rook. Not in a malicious way or even a direct intentional way. Just a simple i made an assumption and didn't even realize it was such. It works so well because it can be read as her commenting that her daughter largely dates women so it makes sense you are one or that huh you're one of the few men my daughter's ever been interesting.
It's honestly perfect for her character and the only reaction to a nonbinary Rook that feels realistic. Every other character just magically knows your pronouns and gender. Which i get is a fantasy for many people, but i actually find rather limiting from a storytelling standpoint. I much rather have a character who gets it wrong and brings an actual honest discussion to the game than what the game actually does which is infantalizingly patting you on the head at every opportunity to tell you how Valid™ you are.

I'm coming off of anon because I'm feeling less shy. to kind of add to your Taash point, in "A Little Dragon Hatches", they kind of allude to the fact that Taash's gender is more nuanced/complicated than just "non-binary", the direct quote is "The Shadow Dragons had some fancy terms. But using "they" and knowing that? It feels...good." so I think there's textual evidence that non-binary isn't a perfect fit/label for them, and it kind of adds to how Shathann is in some ways parallels Taash. Shathann is very concerned about doing things right, correcting mistakes and trying to be perfect, trying to offer a name to Taash's experience in the same way Taash is trying to experience their gender "correctly", to do it right, to squish the complexities of gender into a word so they can name it. I think the Qun having a third gender would make SO MUCH sense, even separate from Taash's story, but it would also give Shathann & Taash more of a bridge to connect and tie into Taash's goal to help the Qun remember/get in touch with forgotten tradition, which would be so cool and interesting if Taash could work with Sten/Arisok to meet that goal. this is a really Taash heavy ask, sorry, I just personally write and think a lot about Taash & Shathann's relationship, there's so much to cover between them & their dynamic is so complex and tender (both in the soft and loving sense and in the sense a bruise is tender, you know?)
yeah!!!! all of this!!! i really like shathann and taash’s dynamic because it has a lot going on. there’s love there even if there’s no affection, and it’s a portrait of the type of unique relationship you have with your family where you maybe can’t stand to be around them, but you have history and you had no choice but to shape who each other are.
i think shathann deserved a lot more, in this arc, than to be used as the strawman for taash to have to explain the concept of nonbinary genders because i might build this hill to die on that the qun wouldnt be as strictly binary and essentialist as it’s usually portrayed. but i also think that she deserves some credit for clearly trying to understand what taash is going through!! i honestly do think the aqun-athlok exchange is really good because it highlights how they view each other and where the problem lies. like you say, shathann needs a label on something to understand it, whereas taash takes this as her either misinterpreting it because she’s not willing to actually listen to them, or continuing to put them in the wrong box because it’s easier for her
and i don’t think we have to lose that by giving her more context to what taash is going through. she might have more words to throw out for taash to reject, and she might have more ideas for HOW taash should act based on how they identify, and they might still get frustrated at how it seems like she’s trying to categorize them immediately rather than letting them just. be what feels right and not worry about what to call it. and i just really wish it didn’t seem like a choice between “explore your gender and reject your culture” or “ hold onto your heritage because it’s important to you, but have no place in it”
