We’re been taken over, by a social form of our self. This social character is making us become quite the opposite of what its described to be. We are becoming less distance and much more self-absorbed and continually only interested in becoming ‘the next hit’, being pleased by likes and approval from strangers that we will never meet. Our personalities are being taken and picked apart and filtered on social media, being a ‘Sharded Self’ of what we once were. The generations that embrace social media are being consumed by this and aren’t aware of it. I’m guilty of it myself, trying to filter the ‘highlights’ in my life on social media to create a whole new persona, a complete different impression. It’s becoming a sort of peer pressure, seeing brands, friends, celebrities; all putting the best and new items all over social media. Daring us to be like this and wanting to keep up with these trends and so called idols. But once we try and jump on this wave of a new trend. A new one has come up, then we try to get this one and can’t keep up. It’s a cycle that seems to never end and maybe it never will, for this high paced society that we live in due to social media, always connecting and always having these opportunities to see the next big thing. Self Esteem has drastically taken a hit within teenagers and young adults alike. Posting a selfie or a picture of what you’re interested in, maybe a picture of the trend your drastically try to be a part of. Then near to no ‘likes’ on social networking apps such as Facebook and Instagram. The hit, the drop of self-confidence and esteem drastically drops. Why is this important? Why do we crave approval? I’m not stating I don’t need it. Because I do. I do all of this, I filter my social media, I want to show my approval on all of this. Not to brag, I don’t think. But to just state, I did this and wait for the ‘likes’/ approval to follow. Yet I know that its such an idiotic thing to want, I don’t want to want it. But growing in this generation, wanting to be approved, to be accepted. It’s difficult. It’s been like this for centuries, just in different ways, but now has intensified and made worse due to social media and this Sharded Self.
