ROUND 1 — Match 221 of 276
Shantotto (Final Fantasy XI)
Problematic because: "Dr. Shantotto is a retired war criminal who ignored orders to stand down because she got the opportunity (in the dashing hero standing on a lamppost kind of way) to blast area-of-effect destruction upon her city's enemies. She got a big fancy house for doing that enough times, and her city's people mostly look the other way when she kidnaps and/or tortures people in her basement. She's competitive. She has a doctorate. She makes fun of her coworkers for not figuring things out (she didn't explain what he was supposed to have understood). She speaks in perfect ending rhymes with herself. She fulfills the noble lady/mad scientist/mad mage/masked villain archetypes simultaneously. She's 2 feet tall and also blonde. Her biggest regret is not having taken over the world. Of course, let's not forget that she researched forbidden magic like a moth to a flame, even if it caused her to get demoted." Propaganda: "The real question is, are WE good enough to vote for HER? That answer could change depending on how many fetch quests we do for her. If you're asking this humble one why I believe you all are worthy of voting for her, it is because she is the NPC character who shows up the most throughout the story arcs in the game. She is, I daresay, the protagonist of FFXI and we should all be thanking her for keeping her game alive for so long (24 years yay!). She is everything. She is competence and drive with a little madness sprinkled in. She has a surgical, inexorable precision with magic and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge pried right from the arteries of her world. If the world deems her problematic because of this, it is because they have chosen to stand against her."
vs. Le Chiffre (James Bond)
Problematic because: "He's a private banker for terrorist organisations. His whole job is moving and investing money for people planning mass violence, and in Casino Royale he tries to profit by shorting airline stocks before arranging the destruction of a prototype Skyfleet plane. Bond stops that, so Le Chiffre has to win the money back at the Casino Royale poker game before his own clients realise he lost their funds. Once he’s cornered, he poisons Bond during the game, kidnaps Vesper, uses her as bait to capture Bond, and tortures Bond for the account password after Bond wins. He’s not trying to take over the world personally, he’s the accountant making sure the people who want to can afford it. Somehow that’s almost worse." Propaganda: "He’s scary because he’s practical. He’s not killing for the aesthetic, he’s poisoning Bond because Bond is a financial problem. He’s not kidnapping Vesper because he has a dramatic soulmate obsession, he needs leverage and she’s the lever. Everything about him feels cold until you notice how panicked he actually is under the surface. Mads Mikkelsen plays him like a man trying very hard to look composed while his entire life is collapsing in slow motion over a card game. He’s horrible, but he’s also perfect for Craig’s first Bond film."
Who should advance?
Shantotto
Le Chiffre
