AKA pārekareka, and Stictocarbo punctatus for a while. When the first one was shot by Johann Forster on the second voyage of Captain Cook, it was called the 'crested shag' and described by Forster's assistant (the Swedish naturalist Anders Sparrman) as Pelicanus punctatus.
Medium sized seabirds, endemic to New Zealand and nesting in large colonies on coastal cliffs. Red-billed Gulls are usually found lurking nearby, and harass the young shags into regurgitating food while the parents are away.
