Shadows are normally just that, the person they are with will see them as such, unaware about the world that surrounds them. When a shadow is separated from their person they will either dwell where their final moments were, or become feral monsters who desire a new host. The more docile ones usually dwell within the Pale City while the more aggressive ones reside within the Maw

But in some special cases a shadow can manifest and have a will of their own, they are known to blend in with the darkness around them save for their amber eyes that glow in complete darkness. They have slit pupils similar to a snake, and some having sharp fangs or a forked tongue. Another thing to take note is their pointed ears though while cute a sentient shadow will not hesitate to bite should a wandering hand draw too close.

Whatever injuries or scars the person has is also shows on their shadows.

This is just abit of info for my take on severed strings AU with shadow children. The one with marks on their face is Six’s shadow while the other belongs to Mono who goes by the name of Shroud

Feel like making a random AU where Mono escaped from the signal tower after Six dropped him, somehow traversing to the Maw and meeting Seven, and Mono (being the bean he is) still wants to trust and be with someone, but he has this shadow version of himself that follows him around, basically representing his negative traits, (distrust, fear, abandonment) Mono and his shadow constantly have fights over Seven. Mono is trying to defend his friend, saying "he's not like her" and, "I know I can trust him" while his shadow doesn't believe a thing he says, always trying to manipulate him into believing Seven will betray him, a what if scenario that haunts his dreams.
