I love mistakes. In fact, I adore them: mistakes are a key to developing creative vision. Take sewing. I know many of you are hesitant to start because “I don’t know how to do it right, I am afraid of mistakes, I want to make it perfectly perfect from the first try”. That’s bullshit, sorry. I think that attempting to make something perfectly perfect with zero experience is a very silly exercise. It won’t be perfect. Simply cause. It won’t be perfect for the first time around. Probably even for the second. There’s a big chance that even after repeating the same thing for the tenth time it still won’t be perfect. But you will learn so much! With every single mistake you learn. So much so, that maybe your eleventh try will be indeed a masterpiece. I’d love to tell you how perfect I am and how every single garment I’m making is perfect, but it would be a lie. No, the items that are going up on the shop are indeed perfect (with an exception for collection ‘Dubrovnik’, but I do have a disclaimer there). But some of [now] perfect garments were redone a few times to get to that perfect state. Some didn’t make it to the shop at all. And it’s ok. With every single garment made I learned something. A better way to do it, a more efficient order of putting details together, corrected stitches, added details, etc. I can design clothes from scratch. I can make clothes from scratch. But every time it’s a learning process. The only difference is that I don’t commit mistakes that I did 2-3 years ago. The mistakes I make now are on a whole new different level and I keep on learning and developing my skills. I want to inspire you to go out there and start making something knowing that you will make mistakes. Actually, intend to make them and then you won’t feel sad about it, you’ll feel successful! Make making mistakes your goal and you will reach the perfection. That’s the only way. Try things out, throw away the rule book, find what works for you. Day 9 #sewconnected Tips and tricks. I’m not sure I’ve got any amazing tips or tricks, but what I have learnt over my years of sewing (or any craft for that matter) is that sometimes you need to step back, have a breather and come back to a project, not continue with it when it’s going wrong or just making do with the mistakes. Instead take a step back, give it time, come back to it with fresh eyes and undo what went wrong and fix it. You will make mistakes, but remembers that means you are challenging yourself and learning new things. This design has been popping up in my Instagram feed almost daily. I had these pieces cut for a different pattern but I decided to use them this way instead. I always make a practice piece first before I use the good fabric. The second picture shows why. Yep, that’s the lining fabric sticking out 😂. I didn’t catch It when sewing the end seams. Fabric choice is everything. I wasn't paying attention when I grabbed this navy blue off the shelf. When I got home and looked at how thin it was, I should have stopped there, but I kept going. Then when the vinyl didn't stick right, I should have stopped. It stretched in weird ways, and left the square pillow cover shaped very wrong.
