Union special 51400P This is a great machine that I’ve posted about before. It produces some of the nicest chain stitching of all my machines. I do a lot of my shirt production on this one. I’ve been hearing some weird myths regarding the “union special” brand. Some people think that any machine that union special produces must be great for denim. But this is super far from the truth. Only a very select few were ever intended for denim production. This machine is part of the 50000 series which has about 14 major classes with multiple subclasses in each category. (Not including all the new versions of each machine over the years). From in the neighborhood of around 100 machines with various differences only a few were denim related. Now I totally understand that some machines weren’t made for denim but can handle it but it doesn’t mean that it will do a comparable job. The manual for my machine says that it’s for “piecing sleeves, joining shoulders and setting sleeves on ordinary shirts”. So that’s what I plan on using it for. Here is a #singersewingmachine model number 112w. It has multiple subclasses that are used for a variety of different functions. All of which involve 2 needles stitching simultaneously in a straight fashion. In my last machine post you saw the 4 that I own. The subclasses that I have are 112w115, 112w120 and I have two of the 112w140 subclass. The 115 is the same as the 140 but the major difference is that the stitch length is adjusted in a different fashion. The 120 is a drop feed machine, which means that the needles go straight up and down and the material is fed by the teeth under the foot of the machine. The other three are all needle feed machines which means that the needle oscillates in way that it pierces the material on its downstroke and pulls the material under the foot before ascending again. Swipe to see little videos of the way needle feed machines work. I also have a needle clamp attachment which lets me independently raise a specific needle in order to turn corners.
