The first thing that Irving says after seeing Helly for the first time is "She looks nice". Knowing he ends up being a father figure to her this is such a beautiful moment
It's also interesting in comparison to Jame Eagan telling Helly he dislikes Helena. Irving doesn't know Helly, he's in a way watching her being born. But he sees something in her and his instinct is to try and help her, something we see through the season. Despite Helly rejecting everything he believes in at the beginning of season one he never looks down on her.
On the opposite side we have Helena who has been molded to follow her father's beliefs and he still doesn't like her. He has been in her life since Helena was a child, she still lives in his house under his rules and yet he doesn't like her.
He’s sitting in a room across from his dead wife. She tells him to sculpt how he feels. He makes a tree. He thought she died in an accident involving a tree. “You think you’re escaping it but you carry it down there. You just don’t know what it is.” or whatever Petey said (Im paraphrasing.) And eventually Mark is going to remember that. Sitting across from the woman he is grieving and just making a tree. The writers just do that and go on about their lives without caring that they’re ruining mine.
Helly R asking "Am I livestock?" Vs Helena "They're animals!" Eagan
Rewatching severance and Woe being visualized as a child bride is INSANE knowing about Jame Eagan.

As someone who jumped in on Severance the week of the season 2 finale … I totally see how the audience was set up to root for Mark/Gemma and why those people keep flooding my fyp with that propaganda. HEAR ME OUT CHAT!!
I watched the trailer for season 2 and it gave me absolutely nothing for Mark/Helly. I’ve only watched the show twice all the way through and I noticed that in season 2, they make it a point to mention Gemma/Ms. Casey over and over and over again instead of dropping more Mark/Helly moments to further their lore.
BECAUSE I WATCHED IT ALL IN 4 DAYS THIS ALL WENT OVER MY HEAD and I have always been firmly in Helly’s corner. I’m also a Helena apologist. That bitch has been through the fucking ringer, she was raised a cult damnit, she can do anything she fucking wants. I love Hellyna. I support women’s wrongs. Specifically her wrongs. Oh she climbed the corporate ladder via nepotism?? Sue me I don’t care.
In my rewatch though I notice more and more how they made the case for Mark/Gemma and while I understand why they did it ??? Question mark??? Because of the difficult choice at the end I guess … I don’t like how they went about it. They totally set it up so people without a darn critical thought in their heads would be pissed that Innie Mark chose to stay with Helly AND I HATE THAT THEY DID THAT TO US. I wish they would have given us a lil moment of reassurance after the Helena pretending to be Helly debacle. I hated watching Helly in pain as Dylan was an ass and Mark took out his frustration on her. Though it ultimately was resolved I see the discourse and how the Mark/Gemma shippers cling to this as proof that Mark/Helly is invalid AND I HATE THAT.
It’s time for a third rewatch and I may very well takes notes this time. Mark/Hellyna shippers please feel free to influence me further. Thanks byeeeee.
it’s so fucked up in s1e5 when cobel blames mark for helly’s suicide attempt….. like he was the one who trapped her on the severed floor?? “this happened on your watch” bitch you were the one who made him do a special wellness check with miss casey just to see if the candle you stole from a box of his dead wife’s crafts in his basement would trigger any memories… bitch this happened on *your* watch actually and *you* should thank Kier it went the way it did…. bitch
